The night felt heavier than usual, like the air itself was watching.
Ariel stood at the edge of the cliff overlooking the territory, her arms wrapped around herself as the wind whipped through her hair. Below, the pack grounds stretched into darkness, lit only by scattered torches and the faint glow of the moon. Everything looked calm—too calm.
Behind her, she heard footsteps.
She didn't need to turn to know it was him.
"You shouldn't be out here alone," Kael's voice came, low and steady, but laced with tension.
Ariel exhaled slowly. "I needed to think."
Kael stopped beside her, his presence warm and grounding, yet tonight it felt different. There was distance in it. Something unspoken.
"Thinking won't change what's coming," he said.
She finally turned to face him. "Then tell me, Alpha King… what exactly is coming?"
His jaw tightened. For a moment, he said nothing, and that silence said more than words ever could.
"They've crossed the northern border," he finally admitted. "Three rival packs. And…" He hesitated.
"And what?" Ariel pressed.
"They're not just after land," Kael said, his golden eyes locking onto hers. "They want you."
The words hit like a blow.
Ariel frowned. "That doesn't make sense. Why would—"
"Because of what you are," Kael cut in. "Because of the power you carry. The bloodline you haven't fully awakened yet."
Ariel shook her head. "I don't even understand that power myself. How can they—"
"They don't need to understand it," Kael said sharply. "They just need to control it."
Silence fell between them again, thicker this time.
Ariel turned back to the cliff, gripping the edge. "So what's your plan?"
Kael stepped closer. "I'm sending you away."
Her head snapped toward him. "What?"
"It's the safest option," he said. "I'll assign warriors to escort you beyond the eastern mountains. Somewhere they won't find you."
"No," Ariel said immediately.
Kael's expression hardened. "This isn't up for debate."
"It is," she shot back. "I'm not running away while your pack fights for me."
"This isn't about pride!" Kael's voice rose, a rare crack in his control. "This is about survival."
"And what about your survival?" Ariel demanded. "What happens if they overpower you? What happens if this is bigger than you think?"
Kael didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Ariel took a step closer, her voice softer now but no less firm. "I'm not leaving you."
Something flickered in his eyes—pain, conflict… fear.
"You don't get to make that choice," he said quietly.
"And you don't get to make it for me," she replied.
Their gazes locked, neither willing to back down.
Then suddenly—
A howl split the night.
Both of them froze.
Another howl followed, closer this time.
Kael's head snapped toward the forest. "They're here."
The ground seemed to tremble as distant snarls echoed through the trees.
Ariel's heart began to race. "Already?"
"They're faster than we expected," Kael muttered. He grabbed her wrist. "Stay behind me."
"No chance," she said, pulling free. "We fight together."
Kael looked like he wanted to argue, but there was no time.
From the shadows of the forest, figures began to emerge.
Wolves.
Dozens of them.
Their eyes glowed in the darkness, filled with hunger and something far more dangerous—intent.
At the front stood a man.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. His presence alone sent a chill down Ariel's spine.
"Kael," the man called out, his voice smooth but laced with mockery. "Still hiding your treasure behind walls?"
Kael stepped forward, placing himself between Ariel and the intruders. "You've made a mistake coming here, Darius."
So that was him.
Darius smiled faintly. "Oh, I don't think so. In fact, I think this is long overdue."
His gaze shifted to Ariel.
And in that moment, she felt it—a strange pull, like something inside her was reacting to him.
Darius tilted his head. "Interesting… she's even stronger than I imagined."
Kael growled, the sound low and dangerous. "Don't look at her."
Darius chuckled. "You don't get to give me orders anymore."
The wolves behind him began to spread out, circling.
Kael's warriors rushed in from all sides, forming a defensive line.
The tension snapped.
"Attack!" Darius commanded.
Chaos erupted.
Wolves lunged. Claws clashed. Growls and screams filled the air.
Ariel barely had time to react before one wolf came straight for her.
She dodged, her instincts kicking in, and struck back with surprising force. The wolf was thrown aside, crashing into another.
She stared at her hands for a split second.
That… wasn't normal.
Another wolf attacked, but this time Ariel moved faster. Stronger.
It was like something inside her had awakened.
Nearby, Kael was a force of nature, tearing through enemies with brutal precision. But even he was being pushed back.
There were too many.
"Ariel!" he shouted. "Stay close!"
But she couldn't.
Because Darius was moving toward her.
Slowly. Confidently.
Like he knew exactly how this would end.
Ariel stood her ground as he approached.
"You shouldn't be here," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos around them.
Darius smirked. "And yet… here I am."
He stopped a few feet away, studying her like she was something rare.
"Do you even know what you are?" he asked.
Ariel frowned. "I'm not afraid of you."
"You should be," he said softly. "Because once you awaken fully… you won't belong to him anymore."
Ariel's chest tightened. "I don't belong to anyone."
Darius's smile widened. "We'll see about that."
He moved in an instant.
Too fast.
Ariel barely managed to react before he grabbed her arm.
Pain shot through her body—but not just pain.
Something else.
A surge of energy.
Her eyes widened as a strange glow flickered beneath her skin.
Darius's expression changed—from confidence to surprise.
"Well… now that's new," he murmured.
Ariel gasped as the energy exploded outward.
A shockwave burst from her, throwing Darius back.
Everything went still.
Even the fighting seemed to pause.
Ariel stood there, breathing heavily, her entire body trembling.
Kael rushed to her side. "Ariel—"
"I… I didn't mean to—" she stammered.
But Kael wasn't looking at her.
He was looking at Darius.
Who was now standing again.
Unharmed.
But smiling.
"Amazing," Darius said. "Truly amazing."
His eyes locked onto Ariel again, darker this time.
"This changes everything."
Kael stepped in front of her, his stance protective. "You're leaving. Now."
Darius chuckled. "Oh, I will. For tonight."
He raised a hand, signaling his wolves.
Reluctantly, they began to retreat.
"But this isn't over," he added. "Not even close."
His gaze lingered on Ariel.
"I'll be back for you."
And then—
He was gone.
The forest fell silent once more.
But the silence didn't bring peace.
Only dread.
Ariel swayed slightly, her strength draining.
Kael caught her before she could fall.
"What… was that?" she whispered.
Kael didn't answer immediately.
Because the truth was—
He didn't know.
But one thing was certain.
Whatever had awakened inside her tonight…
Was far more dangerous than any enemy.
And the war had only just begun.
