Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Awakening Stor

The night carried a strange weight, like the world itself was holding its breath.

Ayla stood at the edge of the cliff, her silver hair whipping wildly in the wind. Below her, the forest stretched endlessly, dark and restless, as though it knew something she didn't. Something was coming—she could feel it deep in her bones, in the very essence of the power that now lived inside her.

Behind her, footsteps approached.

"You shouldn't be out here alone."

The voice was deep, familiar… grounding.

Ayla didn't turn. "I'm not alone."

A pause.

Then Kael stepped beside her, his presence warm against the cold night air. His golden eyes glowed faintly as he studied her profile, searching for answers she wasn't ready to give.

"You've been different," he said quietly. "Since the ritual."

Ayla exhaled slowly. "I am different."

And that was the truth.

Ever since the ancient power had awakened within her, nothing felt the same. The bond between her and Kael had deepened beyond anything she could have imagined—it wasn't just a mate bond anymore. It was something… primal. Something ancient.

And terrifying.

"I can feel them," she admitted softly.

Kael frowned. "Feel who?"

Ayla finally turned to face him, her eyes glowing faintly with a silvery light.

"Them," she repeated. "The others. The ones like me… or maybe not like me. I don't even understand it fully yet."

Kael's jaw tightened. "You mean the ones the prophecy warned about."

Ayla nodded.

The prophecy.

It had been whispered about for generations—a tale of a hybrid born under a blood moon, one who would either unite the realms… or tear them apart completely.

They had once believed it was just a myth.

Now, standing here with Ayla—feeling the immense power radiating from her—it no longer felt like a story.

It felt like destiny.

And destiny was never kind.

"You're not alone in this," Kael said firmly. "Whatever this is… we'll face it together."

Ayla smiled faintly, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.

"That's what scares me."

Before Kael could respond, a sharp crack echoed through the air.

Both of them froze.

The wind shifted.

The forest below grew eerily silent.

Then—

A scream.

Ayla's head snapped toward the sound, her senses instantly sharpening.

"That came from the eastern border," she said.

Kael didn't hesitate. "We move now."

Without another word, they leapt off the cliff, shifting mid-air.

Ayla's transformation was smoother now, more controlled. Her wolf form shimmered with silver light, larger and more powerful than any ordinary wolf. Energy pulsed beneath her fur, like lightning waiting to strike.

Kael followed beside her, his massive black wolf keeping pace as they raced through the forest.

The further they ran, the heavier the air became.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

When they reached the border, the scene that greeted them made Ayla's heart drop.

Bodies.

Pack members lay scattered across the ground, some unconscious… others not moving at all.

The scent of blood filled the air.

And standing at the center of it all—

A figure cloaked in darkness.

Ayla shifted back instantly, her breath catching in her throat.

"Who did this?" she demanded.

The figure chuckled softly.

"Oh… I was wondering when you'd arrive."

Kael shifted beside her, stepping slightly in front. "State your name before I rip it from your corpse."

The figure slowly pulled back their hood.

Ayla's eyes widened.

It was a woman—pale, ethereal, with eyes that glowed a deep crimson. Her smile was cold, almost amused.

"You've grown stronger," the woman said, her gaze locking onto Ayla. "The power suits you."

Ayla clenched her fists. "Answer my question."

The woman tilted her head. "Names hold power. And I don't give mine freely."

Kael growled. "Then you'll die without one."

The woman laughed—a chilling, echoing sound.

"You can try, Alpha King."

The moment she said it, the air shifted violently.

Ayla felt it before she saw it.

Dark energy surged toward them.

"Kael—!"

But it was too late.

The attack hit like a shockwave, throwing both of them backward.

Ayla crashed into a tree, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs. Pain flared through her body, but something inside her responded—something fierce and unyielding.

Power surged.

Her eyes flashed silver.

And suddenly… the pain dulled.

She stood slowly, her gaze locking onto the woman.

"You shouldn't have done that," Ayla said, her voice low… dangerous.

The woman's smile widened. "There it is."

Ayla didn't think.

She moved.

In a blur of motion, she closed the distance between them, her speed far beyond what she had ever possessed before.

Her hand shot forward—

But the woman caught it effortlessly.

For a split second, shock flashed through Ayla.

Then the woman leaned closer, her voice a whisper.

"You're not the only one who's changed."

Ayla's eyes widened.

Before she could react, a surge of dark energy exploded from the woman's body, sending Ayla flying again.

Kael roared, shifting mid-charge as he lunged at the attacker.

The forest erupted into chaos.

Claws met shadows.

Light clashed with darkness.

Ayla pushed herself up, her heart pounding. She could feel it now—clearer than ever.

This woman…

She wasn't just powerful.

She was connected to the same force inside Ayla.

Which meant—

"She's like me," Ayla whispered.

But something was off.

The energy felt… corrupted.

Twisted.

"Kael!" Ayla shouted. "Don't let her touch you!"

But it was too late.

The woman's hand pressed against Kael's chest—

And suddenly, he froze.

Ayla's blood ran cold.

"Kael?"

His body trembled.

His eyes flickered—

Gold… to black.

"No," Ayla breathed.

The woman smiled wickedly. "Such a strong Alpha… it would be a shame to waste him."

Ayla's heart slammed against her ribs.

"What did you do to him?!"

The woman's grip tightened on Kael. "I simply… awakened something buried deep inside."

Kael let out a low, guttural growl.

But it wasn't his.

Ayla could feel it—the bond between them was still there… but something was trying to sever it.

Trying to take him away from her.

Rage exploded inside her.

"No."

The ground beneath her feet cracked as her power surged wildly.

"I won't let you."

The air around Ayla began to shimmer, silver energy spiraling around her like a storm.

The woman's expression finally shifted—from amusement… to interest.

"Yes… that's it," she murmured. "Show me what you can do."

Ayla didn't hold back.

She unleashed everything.

The forest lit up with blinding silver light as Ayla charged forward, her power tearing through the darkness like a blade.

The woman raised her hand to counter—

But this time, Ayla was faster.

Stronger.

Her attack collided with the woman's energy, the impact sending shockwaves through the entire forest.

Trees shattered.

The ground split.

And for a moment—

Time seemed to stop.

Then—

The woman was thrown back.

Kael collapsed to the ground, the dark energy around him dissipating.

Ayla rushed to him instantly.

"Kael!"

He groaned, his eyes flickering back to gold.

"Ayla…" he rasped.

Relief flooded her chest.

"You're okay," she whispered, pulling him close.

But the moment didn't last.

A slow clap echoed through the clearing.

Ayla's head snapped up.

The woman was standing again—barely injured, her smile wider than ever.

"Impressive," she said. "You're stronger than I expected."

Ayla's expression hardened. "Who are you?"

The woman tilted her head, considering.

Then, finally—

"I suppose you've earned that much."

She stepped forward, her crimson eyes gleaming.

"My name is Selene."

Ayla's breath hitched.

Selene.

The name felt familiar… like something buried deep in her memory.

And judging by Kael's sudden tension—

He recognized it too.

"That's impossible," Kael muttered.

Selene's smile turned cold.

"Oh… I assure you," she said softly, "I'm very real."

Ayla's heart pounded.

Something about this wasn't just dangerous—

It was bigger than anything they had faced before.

Selene took a step back, her form beginning to blur into shadows.

"This was only a test," she said. "And now… I know exactly what you are."

Ayla clenched her fists. "You're not leaving."

Selene's laughter echoed through the night.

"Try and stop me."

Before Ayla could move, Selene vanished into darkness.

Silence fell over the forest once more.

But this time—

It wasn't peaceful.

It was the calm before something far worse.

Ayla stared at the place where Selene had disappeared, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

"She'll be back," she said.

Kael stood beside her, his expression grim.

"I know."

Ayla's eyes glowed faintly again, her power still simmering beneath the surface.

"And when she does…"

Her voice dropped, filled with quiet determination.

"I'll be ready."

Because this wasn't just a fight anymore.

It was a war.

And it had only just begun.
