Chapter 38 - 38

Chapter 2: The Frost and the Shadow

The temperature plummeted as Leo and Samuel crossed the invisible boundary into the Frozen Tundra biome. Huge, jagged pillars of blue ice rose from the permafrost, and the wind carried a biting chill that bypassed standard thermal gear.

"Leo, the mana-traces are getting darker," Samuel said, his Primal Earth-Dragon King (Toro) stomping the ground to keep the frost from seizing its joints.

Leo tapped into Sovereign's Insight. Through the swirling snow, he saw a dome of cracked ice. Inside, Elena Frost was on one knee, her Ice-Phoenix struggling to stay airborne. Its wings were stained with an oily, black substance that smoked against the white snow.

The Abomination of the Maw

Facing Elena's team was a three-man squad wearing the matte-black tactical gear of the Shadow-Maw Team. Their faces were hidden behind bone-masks, but it was their "pet" that froze Leo's blood.

It was a Void-Infected Chimera (Grade-S, Artificial). It looked like a stitched-together nightmare of a white tiger and a mountain eagle, but its skin was translucent, showing pulsing violet veins, and it had no eyes—only two glowing orbs of void energy.

"Such a waste of a Phoenix," one of the hooded Tamers hissed. "Its soul would be a perfect anchor for the Maw's next gate."

The Chimera lunged, its claws phasing through Elena's ice shields as if they weren't there.

"Nova, Spatial Interchange!" Leo roared.

In a blink, Leo appeared in front of Elena. Nova, the Void-Aegis Sovereign, expanded her shell. The Chimera's claws hit an invisible wall of folded space, sending a shockwave that shattered the surrounding ice pillars.

The Battle of Two Voids

"You again," the lead Shadow-Maw Tamer growled. "The Heart boy with the stolen prince."

"Kael wasn't stolen," Leo said, his voice cold. "He was found. And he doesn't like intruders."

Kael, the Void-Dragon Prince, uncoiled from Leo's wrist, his scales rattling like metal plates.

"Sam, take care of Elena! Amber, White-Sun Flare!"

The Celestial Nine-Tail Kitsune leaped over Leo, her nine tails fanning out like a supernova. She unleashed a blast of white fire that didn't melt the ice but burned the black corruption off the Chimera's hide.

The Chimera screeched—a sound that vibrated in the students' brains. It retaliated by opening its maw and firing a beam of pure Void Decay.

Nova's shell opened wide, turning into a literal black hole. She didn't block the beam; she ate it. The massive energy surge caused Nova's shell to glow with intense violet starlight.

The Tactical Retreat

The Shadow-Maw Tamers realized they couldn't win a direct clash with Leo while he was in his home element of the Void.

"This was just a harvest, not the main event," the leader sneered. He touched a seal on his chest. "We'll see you in the Arena Stage, Leo Heart. By then, the Master will have finished the Great Vessel."

A cloud of black, oily smoke erupted, identical to the one in the warehouse. By the time Amber's fire cleared the air, the team and their Chimera were gone.

An Uneasy Alliance

The Blizzard Team's Ice-Phoenix collapsed, its mana-core nearly shattered. Elena looked up at Leo, her pride wounded but her eyes filled with a new, grim realization.

"They... they weren't trying to win the points," she whispered. "They were trying to kill my Phoenix to feed that thing."

"I know," Leo said, extending a hand to help her up. "They're using the Championship to find the strongest beasts and 'harvest' their essences. Elena, if we keep fighting each other, the Cult will pick us off one by one."

Elena looked at Leo's outstretched hand, then at the Void-Dragon hovering protectively near him. She took it. "The Northern Blizzard Sect doesn't owe many favors, Leo Heart. But today, you saved my partner. Until the Shadow-Maw is gone... my ice is at your back."

The End of the First Leg

As the 24-hour timer expired, the remaining 100 teams were teleported back to the Central Stadium. The crowd roared, but Leo only saw the leaderboard.

Team Heart: 45,000 Points

Team Shadow-Maw: 42,000 Points

Team Blizzard: 30,000 Points

The announcer's voice boomed: "Congratulations to the Top 100! Tomorrow, the Arena Stage begins! 1v1 Team Battles until only one Sovereign remains!"

Leo felt a cold shiver. The Void-Heart Fragment in his pocket was pulsing faster than ever. It wasn't just reacting to his power anymore; it was reacting to something underneath the stadium.

"Master Silas was right," Leo muttered to Samuel. "The Championship isn't a tournament. It's an altar."
