Chapter 39 - 39

Chapter 3: The Altar of the Arena

The Grand Alliance Stadium was a marvel of modern mana-engineering. Its floating platforms could hold 100,000 spectators, and its sands were infused with Self-Repairing Quartz. But as Leo stepped onto the arena floor for the first round of the Top 100, his Sovereign's Insight didn't see a sports venue.

He saw a giant, circular circuit.

[SYSTEM: Warning! Ancient Mana-Conductivity Detected.]

[Analysis: The Stadium Floor is a 'Soul-Drain' Array.]

[Condition: Inactive. Requires: Blood of a High-Tier Beast to Trigger.]

"Leo, look at the crowd," Samuel whispered. "They have no idea they're sitting on a bomb."

"Master Silas is in the maintenance tunnels below," Leo replied, his eyes scanning the VIP boxes. "He's trying to find the Ritual Core. Our job is to win the match without letting the 'Shadow-Maw' team trigger the array."

Round 1: Team Heart vs. The Heralds of Dust

The opposing team stepped out. They weren't the main Shadow-Maw squad, but their eyes had that tell-tale purple flicker. They were Puppets.

"Begin!" the announcer roared.

The Heralds didn't summon standard pets. They released three Bone-Plated Scorpions (Grade-A). These creatures didn't attack Leo directly; they began stinging the arena floor, injecting a dark, oily mana into the quartz.

"They're jump-starting the array!" Leo realized. "Sam, full offense! Don't let those stings connect with the ground!"

"Toro, Gravity Well: Sky-Crush!"

The Primal Earth-Dragon King roared. Instead of raising a wall, he reversed the gravity in the center of the arena. The heavy scorpions were lifted into the air, struggling to find purchase.

"Amber, Nine-Tail Burst: Solar Purge!"

The Celestial Kitsune leaped into the air, her nine tails spinning like a saw-blade of white fire. She didn't hit the scorpions; she burned the dark mana trails they had left on the floor, cauterizing the ritual lines before they could spread.

The Interference

Suddenly, the stadium's holographic sky flickered. A dark, digital mist began to leak from the jumbo-screens.

"Something's wrong with the broadcast!" a spectator screamed.

On the screens, the face of the Cult's leader—the one Leo had seen in the Trench ruins—appeared. "People of the Alliance! You have lived in the shadow of 'Breeders' for too long. Today, we return the Earth to its rightful owner: The Primal Maw!"

CRACK.

The arena floor split open. Not from the battle, but from an explosion in the tunnels below.

[SYSTEM: Communication Lost with Master Silas.]

[Emergency Alert: The Ritual Core has been Force-Activated!]

The Emergence of the First Apostle

From the chasm in the center of the arena, a figure rose. He wasn't a student. He was a man clad in armor made of obsidian scales, holding a staff tipped with a Void-Dragon's Claw.

"I am Malphas, First Apostle of the Maw," he declared. "Leo Heart, the 'Fragment' in your pocket is the final key. Give it to me, and I will let these 100,000 sheep live."

"You want the Heart?" Leo stepped forward, his white hair flowing as he performed a Partial Fusion with Kael. His right arm transformed, covered in shimmering black dragon scales. "Come and take it."

"Leo, no! It's a trap!" Samuel shouted, but it was too late.

Malphas slammed his staff down. The blood spilled by the defeated scorpions suddenly glowed. The stadium's Soul-Drain Array roared to life, forming a cage of purple light around the entire stadium.

[DING!]

[New Quest: The Stadium Siege.]

[Objective: Defeat Malphas and stabilize the Ritual Core.]

[Warning: Every 60 seconds, the stadium will drain 1% of the spectators' life force.]

"Nova, Spatial Lockdown!" Leo commanded. "Sam, get the other students and start evacuating the stands! Amber, guard the exit!"

Leo faced Malphas alone in the center of the crumbling arena. The "Championship" was over. The war for the soul of the planet had officially moved to the surface.

The Secret of the Maw

"You think you're saving them?" Malphas laughed, his voice echoing with the power of the Void. "Your ancestor didn't 'save' this world, Leo. He paused it. The Great Merger was a harvest that was interrupted. We are just here to finish the meal."

Malphas waved his hand, and the shadows of the defeated scorpions rose, transforming into Shadow-Wraiths.

"Kael," Leo whispered, his dragon-arm pulsing with heat. "Let's show him what happens when you try to 'pause' a Heart."
