Chapter 35 - Chapter 36: The Truth He Never Meant to Reveal

"You don't understand," she said quietly.

Her voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Because every word carried weight.

Ethan's eyes stayed locked on hers.

"Then make me understand."

Maya's breath hitched slightly.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

Her guard slipped.

"You weren't there," she repeated, softer this time.

"Not when they took me. Not when they—"

She stopped.

Her throat tightened.

Images flashed in her mind.

Cold rooms.

Endless tests.

Screams she had forced herself not to hear.

"They broke me, Ethan," she finished, barely above a whisper.

Silence fell like a heavy curtain.

Ethan didn't interrupt.

Didn't argue.

Didn't deny it.

Because he could see it now.

Not just in her words—

But in the way she stood.

Too still.

Too controlled.

Too careful.

That wasn't strength.

That was survival.

"I know," he said quietly.

Maya frowned.

"You don't—"

"I do."

That stopped her.

Ethan took a slow step forward.

Ignoring the guards.

Ignoring the weapons still pointed at him.

"Because I've seen what they do," he continued.

"And I've seen what people become after."

Maya's eyes searched his face.

Trying to understand.

Trying to find the lie.

But there wasn't one.

"Then you should understand why I made this choice," she said.

Ethan shook his head slowly.

"No," he replied.

"I understand why you think you had no choice."

A pause.

"But that doesn't make it the right one."

Maya's expression hardened again.

"Easy for you to say."

"Is it?" Ethan shot back.

For the first time—

There was heat in his voice.

"You think I had choices?" he continued.

"You think I haven't had to decide who lives and who doesn't?"

The room went still.

Even the guards shifted.

Uneasy.

Because that—

That wasn't something you said lightly.

Maya's heart skipped.

"…what are you talking about?"

Ethan hesitated.

This was it.

The line he had never wanted to cross.

The truth he had buried.

Hidden.

Ignored.

But now—

There was no point hiding it anymore.

"Three years ago," he said slowly…

"…the boy who disappeared."

Maya froze.

The rain.

The argument.

The one who never came back.

Her voice came out barely steady.

"…you know what happened to him."

Ethan's gaze dropped for a second.

Then lifted again.

"I was there."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

"What?" Maya whispered.

"I was the one he was arguing with," Ethan continued.

Her heart started racing.

"No…"

"He found out something he shouldn't have."

Maya shook her head slowly.

"Stop."

"And I had a choice," Ethan said, his voice tightening now.

"Let him go… and risk everything—"

"Ethan—"

"Or stop him."

The word hung in the air.

Stop.

Not hurt.

Not fight.

Stop.

Maya's eyes widened.

"…what did you do?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

But he didn't need to.

Because the silence said everything.

"You didn't…" her voice broke.

Ethan clenched his jaw.

"I didn't mean to," he said quietly.

That was worse.

So much worse.

Maya took a step back.

Like the ground beneath her had shifted.

"You're lying," she said, but there was no conviction in it.

"I wish I was."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"You're just like them," she whispered.

That hit.

Harder than anything else.

Ethan flinched.

But he didn't deny it.

"Maybe," he said.

The honesty made it worse.

"But the difference is—"

He stepped closer.

"I hate what I did."

Maya's eyes filled with conflict.

"Do you?" she challenged.

"Because from where I'm standing…"

Her voice dropped.

"…you don't look any different."

Silence.

Then—

Ethan smiled.

But it wasn't a normal smile.

It was empty.

Tired.

"You're right," he said.

That wasn't the answer she expected.

"I'm not different," he continued.

"I'm worse."

The room felt colder.

"But at least I know it."

That line hit something deep.

Because Maya—

Maya wasn't sure anymore.

Was she still herself?

Or had she already crossed that line?

The man in black finally stepped in again.

"That's enough," he said sharply.

The tension snapped slightly.

"Take him back."

Guards moved forward.

This time—

Ethan didn't resist.

Not because he couldn't.

But because he had already done what he came to do.

He had broken through her walls.

Just a little.

As they dragged him away—

His eyes stayed on hers.

"Whatever you think you've become…" he said quietly…

"…you're still Maya."

Her breath caught.

"And if you keep going down this path…"

A pause.

"…you won't come back."

The door slammed shut behind him.

Silence.

Maya stood there.

Frozen.

For the first time in days—

Her control slipped.

Her hands trembled.

Her breathing uneven.

Because now—

She wasn't just fighting them.

She was fighting herself.
