Chapter 34 - Chapter 35: The Thing That Wasn’t Human

Maya couldn't forget the face.

Even though it hadn't been clear.

Even though it hadn't been fully there.

She still felt it.

Watching her.

Not like a memory.

Not like a person.

But like something that existed beyond both.

The room felt colder now.

Or maybe—

It was just her.

"What did you see?"

The man in black's voice cut through her thoughts again.

Calm.

Patient.

But underneath—

Demanding.

Maya forced her breathing to steady.

She couldn't tell him the truth.

Not yet.

"Nothing new," she said flatly.

Silence.

The man in black studied her carefully.

Too carefully.

"You hesitated."

Maya met his gaze without flinching.

"I'm tired."

A pause.

Then—

A small nod.

"Understandable."

But she knew he didn't fully believe her.

That was fine.

Because she didn't need him to.

Not anymore.

"Take him back," he ordered.

The guards moved immediately, grabbing Ethan again.

This time—

He didn't fight.

But his eyes never left Maya.

Searching.

Questioning.

And something else.

Trust.

Even now.

That made it worse.

Maya looked away first.

She couldn't let that affect her.

Not now.

Not when she was finally starting to understand the game.

Later—

Much later—

Maya stood alone in her room.

No cameras inside.

At least—

None that were obvious.

She stared at her hands again.

"They're not mine anymore," she whispered.

Because they weren't.

Not really.

They had become tools.

Weapons.

Keys.

But if they could open people—

Then maybe—

They could open something bigger.

She closed her eyes.

And focused.

Not on a person.

Not on a memory.

But on that feeling.

That presence.

That thing she saw inside Ethan.

At first—

Nothing happened.

Just silence.

Then—

A flicker.

Like a signal trying to connect.

Maya's breath slowed.

She pushed deeper.

Focused harder.

And then—

It responded.

The world around her faded.

Not into memories.

But into something else.

A space that didn't feel real.

Dark.

Endless.

And quiet.

Too quiet.

"Maya."

Her heart stopped.

That voice—

It didn't echo.

It didn't sound distant.

It sounded…

Close.

Too close.

She turned sharply.

There was no one there.

But she could feel it.

Right behind her.

"Interesting," the voice said.

Maya spun around again.

Nothing.

But this time—

She didn't panic.

Instead—

She asked.

"…what are you?"

Silence.

Then—

A soft chuckle.

"Wrong question."

Her hands clenched.

"Then what's the right one?"

A pause.

Then—

"Why can you see me?"

The question hit differently.

Because she didn't have an answer.

And that—

That scared her.

"I didn't mean to," she said quietly.

Another pause.

Then—

"But you did."

The darkness around her shifted slightly.

Not moving—

But watching.

Learning.

Just like she was.

Maya forced herself to stay calm.

"If you're not his memory…" she said slowly.

"…then what are you doing inside Ethan?"

This time—

The silence stretched longer.

Then—

"I'm not inside him."

Her breath caught.

"…what?"

"Not entirely."

That didn't make sense.

And yet—

It felt true.

"What does that mean?"

Another soft laugh.

"You'll understand soon."

Maya's heart started to race again.

"I don't want 'soon,'" she said firmly.

"I want answers now."

The air shifted again.

And for a moment—

She felt it.

Closer.

Right in front of her.

"If I give you answers," the voice said quietly…

"…you won't be the same."

Maya didn't hesitate.

"I'm already not."

Silence.

Then—

"…good."

The word felt heavy.

Like approval.

Or maybe—

A warning.

Suddenly—

The space cracked.

Like glass under pressure.

Maya gasped as the world snapped back into place.

Her room.

Her walls.

Her reality.

She staggered slightly, catching herself against the edge of the bed.

Her heart was racing now.

Faster than before.

Stronger.

Because now—

She knew something.

Something important.

That thing—

Whatever it was—

Was real.

And worse—

It knew her now.

Across the facility—

Ethan sat in silence.

Alone again.

But not really.

He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees.

"…you felt that too, didn't you?" he muttered.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

A faint smile touched his lips.

Not his usual one.

Something darker.

Something older.

"Yeah," he whispered.

"I know."
