Chapter 36 - Chapter 37: The Crack Inside Her

The room felt too quiet.

Too still.

Maya hadn't moved since the door closed behind Ethan.

Not even an inch.

His words kept replaying in her mind.

Over and over.

Like they refused to leave.

"I'm worse."

"At least I know it."

"You won't come back."

Her chest tightened.

"No…" she whispered under her breath.

She shook her head slightly.

As if she could physically push the thoughts away.

But they stayed.

Because the truth was—

They weren't just his words.

They were questions.

And she didn't have answers.

"Maya."

The voice snapped her back.

The man in black stood a few steps away, watching her closely.

"You've done enough for today," he said.

Maya blinked slowly.

"I'm fine."

A lie.

But she said it anyway.

Because weakness here—

Was dangerous.

He studied her for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Good."

But his eyes lingered.

Like he could see through her.

"Return to your room."

Maya didn't argue.

Didn't hesitate.

She turned—

And walked out.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like nothing inside her was breaking apart.

But the moment the door shut behind her—

Everything changed.

Her steps slowed.

Her breathing became uneven.

And suddenly—

She didn't feel in control anymore.

Her hand pressed against the wall—

And instantly—

The visions came.

Too many.

Too fast.

Fragments of memories flooded her mind.

Not hers.

Never hers.

Fear.

Pain.

Secrets.

Voices.

Maya gasped and pulled her hand back.

"No—"

But it didn't stop.

Because this time—

She hadn't triggered it.

It had triggered itself.

The hallway around her blurred.

And then—

She was somewhere else.

Not a memory.

Not a person.

That same place.

Dark.

Endless.

Watching.

"You're losing control."

The voice again.

Calm.

Almost amused.

Maya turned sharply.

"Stop doing that."

A soft laugh echoed.

"I'm not doing anything."

Her fists clenched.

"Then what is this?!"

Silence.

Then—

"You are."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"You opened the door."

The darkness shifted slightly.

"And now… you don't know how to close it."

Maya's heart started pounding.

"That's not true."

But even as she said it—

She wasn't sure anymore.

Because the visions—

They were getting stronger.

Deeper.

Harder to control.

"What are you?" she demanded again.

A pause.

Then—

"Something you're not ready to understand."

Anger flared inside her.

"Then make me ready."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

"No."

That answer hit differently.

Not dismissive.

Protective.

Or maybe—

Threatening.

"Why?" Maya asked, her voice quieter now.

The darkness stilled.

And for the first time—

It felt… closer.

"If you understand me…"

A beat.

"…you'll understand them."

Her stomach dropped.

"…them?"

Silence.

Then—

"The ones you think you're fighting."

Everything inside her went still.

Because that meant—

This wasn't just about Ethan.

Or the facility.

Or even the man in black.

This was bigger.

Much bigger.

"What do they want?" she asked slowly.

The answer came immediately.

"You."

Her breath hitched.

"Why?"

This time—

The silence stretched.

Heavy.

Then—

"Because you're the only one who can see the truth."

The words sent a chill through her.

"What truth?"

But before the voice could answer—

The world snapped back.

Harsh.

Sudden.

Maya stumbled forward, catching herself against the wall.

The hallway returned.

The lights.

The silence.

But her heart—

Her heart was racing.

Because now—

She knew one thing for sure.

This wasn't random.

She wasn't just a test subject.

She wasn't just a weapon.

She was the key.

And keys—

Could unlock things.

Or destroy them.

Later that night—

Maya sat on the edge of her bed, her hands clasped tightly together.

Thinking.

Planning.

Ethan's words.

The voice.

The truth.

All of it was starting to connect.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

If the man in black wasn't the real leader…

If there was something bigger controlling everything…

And if that thing inside Ethan was connected to it—

Then she didn't just need to survive.

She needed to get closer.

To all of it.

A small, dangerous thought formed in her mind.

What if I don't escape…

What if I go deeper instead?

Her eyes darkened slightly.

Because that—

That was a different kind of plan.

Not running.

Not resisting.

But pretending.

Becoming exactly what they wanted—

Until she could destroy them from the inside.

Maya leaned back slowly.

And for the first time since everything started—

She smiled.

Not softly.

Not innocently.

But knowingly.

"Fine," she whispered into the darkness.

"I'll play your game."
