Chapter 29 - The Red Knight

The warehouse exit of Level 4 shimmered and spat them out into a narrow, blood-red corridor that had never appeared on any M.E.G. map. Daniel Voss stepped through first, pipe resting across his shoulder, five summoned souls trailing behind him like silent banners of war. Vannia and a still-groggy Mia followed, silver and white auras flickering in the crimson gloom.

The corridor ended abruptly at a jagged tear in reality. Beyond it stretched an endless crimson plain under a sky the color of fresh blood. No walls. No ceiling. Only flat, endless stone and distant thunder that sounded like laughter.

A figure waited for them at the center of the plain.

He sat atop a throne made of fused system interfaces — hundreds of golden and red panels melted together into a macabre seat. The entity was clad in blood-red plate armor that moved like liquid muscle. A helm with a shattered visor hid his face, yet two burning white eyes stared out. A colossal greatsword rested across his knees, its blade etched with the names of every system user it had ever killed.

The moment he stood, the entire plain trembled.

The Red Knight's voice rolled across the plain like grinding steel and distant screams.

"Chosen-0007. Chosen-0008. Chosen-0009. Three little stars the Pantheon plucked from the dark. How quaint."

He took one step forward. The ground cracked beneath his boot.

"I watched you slaughter my children in that warehouse. The three who had absorbed systems and finally embraced what humans truly are."

Daniel raised the pipe. The five summoned souls moved into formation around the three Chosen — Elias and Reyes at the front, Mara scanning, Vannia's parents flanking the sisters.

The Red Knight laughed. It was a cold, hollow sound.

"You still don't understand. Humans are only good when they are weak and afraid. Give them a system — any system — and the mask falls away. Greed. Cruelty. Power. They become exactly what I always knew they were."

He spread his armored arms.

"That is why I created the Reaper Syndicate. Not to rule the Backrooms. Not to fight the entities. I created them to accelerate the truth. To let every human with a system reveal their real face. To harvest the evil they inevitably become. My killers were never monsters. They were honest."

Vannia's silver aura flared. "You turned my family into a game. You let Partygoer 0 erase them just to watch."

The Red Knight tilted his helm.

"I did not 'let' anything. I simply removed the illusion of goodness. The weak die smiling. The strong become Reapers. That is the only law worth following."

He pointed one massive gauntlet straight at Daniel.

"And you, Plague Sovereign… you are the worst kind of liar. You still pretend you are here to save people. You still pretend humans can be better than the systems they carry. That is why I have come personally."

The greatsword lifted from his knees and planted itself point-down in the stone. Cracks of red light spider-webbed outward.

"Three Chosen. Five dead souls. One god who has already accepted what humanity truly is when given power."

The Red Knight's eyes burned brighter.

"Draw your pipe, Chosen-0007. Show me how long your pretty immunity lasts against the one who taught the Backrooms how to make monsters out of men."

The crimson plain darkened as the Red Knight took another step forward. The air itself tasted of iron and betrayal.

Daniel tightened his grip on the pipe.

Vannia and Mia moved into combat stance beside him.

The five summoned souls raised their spectral weapons.

The Red Knight — god and founder of the Reaper Syndicate — smiled beneath his shattered visor.

"Let us see," he said, "which of us is truly evil when the system sings."

The final movement of the Backrooms' oldest war had just begun.
