I am a Pikachu, a Pikachu who has reached the level of a Sub-Legendary. Perhaps some people might find it strange where I got such immense power. To that, I can only say I was incredibly lucky to meet Ash—my Master, my partner—right from the very beginning.
My first meeting with Ash was very ordinary. So ordinary that it was mundane. Just a meeting between a Pichu and a human child. And the catalyst for us meeting was just a common food... tomatoes.
At that time, I was just out looking for berries like usual, but I unexpectedly saw something bright red. The first time I laid eyes on it, I had a feeling that it would be the love of my life.
And exactly as I thought, the moment I took my first bite of that thing, I was hooked by its sweet and sour taste. Compared to berries, it was a world of difference. And then, I ate until I stuffed myself.
Funny, right? Because it was my first time eating tomatoes and they tasted so good, I kept eating until I literally incapacitated myself. Delicious food is great, but eating too much really does make you uncomfortable.
I lay on the ground, my stomach so stuffed I didn't want to move a single muscle, feeling both euphoric and agonizing pain. Just as I felt I might actually die from overeating, Ash appeared.
"I have to say, although the tomatoes I tried to grow are indeed delicious, aren't you afraid of bursting from eating that many...?"
His voice was laced with exasperation, but he didn't blame me. Although I really wanted to apologize, my stomach was just too full.
"Pi!"
"You better not talk. Eating that much must be really uncomfortable."
Just as he said, I could only stick out my bulging stomach and nod at him. Then, he picked me up.
"Good thing I have some stomach medicine at home. Just bear with it for a bit."
"Pi..."
Although I didn't know what stomach medicine was, I could feel his goodwill, so I didn't shock him. Afterwards, he brought me to his home. He fed me a pill, gave me some water, and after a while, I felt much better. And because he put me on a small bed, I actually fell asleep because it was so comfortable.
When I woke up, the agonizing feeling of being overstuffed was finally gone. Seeing me wake up, a human woman smiled at me and said, "You're awake. Don't eat so much next time. You aren't the first one Ash has brought back for overeating."
I clearly stole their food, yet they were the ones worrying about me. It made me feel very embarrassed. But right now, what I wanted to see more was the person who helped me. Through my frantic gesturing, the human woman understood what I meant.
"Are you looking for Ash? He should be out checking on his tomatoes right now. Oh, that's the food you ate. It seems Ash really did a good job growing them. Everyone seems to love them."
"Pi?"
Everyone? I didn't know what she meant by 'everyone', but right now I wanted to know where the person who saved me was. The human woman seemed to understand me and carried me to find him.
"Ash. Pichu is awake."
"Oh, Pichu is awake? Hey! Pidgey! Didn't I tell you not to eat the unripe ones?! That's going to be so bitter!"
Ash? So his name was Ash. But he sure was strange. His Pokémon were stealing the food he grew, yet he wasn't angry at all. Instead, he was warning the Pokémon not to eat the unripe ones.
"You're awake, Pichu. Don't eat so much next time, or you'll probably feel sick again. Oh right, my name is Ash. I'm the one who grew the tomatoes you stole."
That was my first meeting with Ash. An encounter between an idiot who ate until he burst and the person who saved the thief.
After that, I became a regular at Ash's house, always going to find him. Eventually, I voluntarily became Ash's Pokémon. That's right, when he bought his very first Poké Ball, I pressed myself against it.
"I see. Then we're partners from now on, Pichu. My training is going to be very scary, you know."
It wasn't scary at all. Although the training was exhausting, Ash's care and attention never fell short. Under these circumstances, more and more Pokémon formed bonds with Ash, and the Pokémon he always took care of willingly accepted his training. Later on Meowth arrived too.
I also witnessed Ash training Magikarp, which people despised as weak, into Gyarados. I helped Feebas, which people despised as ugly, evolve into Milotic. I watched Ash train countless old friends into Totem Pokémon, and I witnessed these Totem Pokémon willingly tap Ash's Poké Balls.
Ash rarely battled to catch Pokémon, because he didn't need to. He really didn't. We had all long been 'defeated' by him over the years—defeated by his genuine feelings.
And as Ash's first Pokémon, I stepped onto the peak of the Champion tier with the power of a Pikachu. I even relied on Ash's custom moves to defeat the Dragonite and step into the Sub-Legendary realm.
Although that was partly because the Dragonite had hidden injuries, I at least proved Ash's abilities.
Ash never cares whether a Pokémon is strong or weak. As long as they are willing to follow him, he will never abandon his Pokémon. Ash has a Zigzagoon whose brain seems to have been injured, making it a bit slow, but Ash never abandoned it. He even tried to find ways to cure it.
Nurse Joy once said that because of Zigzagoon's injuries, it might never be able to evolve. But back then, Ash just smiled, hugged it, and continued taking it everywhere with him. It wasn't until Ash had to leave Hoenn that he let Zigzagoon stay with Poochyena and the others at Professor Birch's lab to help watch the house. Perhaps... this is exactly why we love Ash.
I am a Pikachu. A Pikachu who has stepped into the Sub-Legendary realm. Ash... I'm so glad I met you and that I can be with you.
