Several more weeks passed. Harry and Raven sat at the dining table with the other children of the orphanage, surrounded by voices, laughter, and the soft sound of silverware. Claire stood beside them, hands gently folded, a proud expression on her face. In front of Harry sat a cake coated in Oreo crumbles. In front of Raven was a cake covered in thick, chocolatey layers with a bold Reese's emblem drawn in icing.
The children gathered around began to sing:
"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Raven Cross,
Happy birthday to Harry Potter and Raven!"
Happy Birthday to you!
One of the kids leaned in and added, "And many more!"
Raven turned her head slightly towards Harry and gave him a knowing look. "What are you waiting for, Harry? Blow out your candles and make a wish."
They both exhaled deeply, blowing out their candles at the same time. The room erupted in applause. Claire smiled warmly.
"You're both eleven years old now," she said. "How are you feeling?"
Harry shrugged with a smile. "I feel like an adult."
Raven raised her eyebrow and glanced sideways at him. "You feel like an adult? I feel far older than that after all the stuff I've been through lately. I'm just thankful that I'm able to sleep in a little bit more."
Harry narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "What have you been up to lately?"
Raven's lips curved upwards as she said, "You would never believe me if I told you, Harry Potter."
Claire stepped forward, motioning to the cakes. "All right, as you requested, Raven, I made a Reese's ice-cream cake for you. And Harry, I made an Oreo ice-cream cake for you. We scraped together some extra funding from the state, and they agreed to let both of you have your own ice-cream cakes."
Raven nodded with satisfaction. "All right."
"I love Oreo ice-cream cakes," Harry said with a content look.
"I love this world," Raven said with a dreamy tone.
Harry looked puzzled. "What do you mean you love this world?"
Raven gave a small laugh. "I love a world where you can get ice-cream cakes like Reese's and Oreo ice-cream cakes."
Harry gave a small nod. "Yeah, I can agree with that."
As they picked up their forks, Claire raised a hand. "Both of you, hold on before you start eating. You have to share the cake with the other children too."
A few of the younger kids approached with eager faces.
Raven handed a piece to Sammy.
Harry handed a piece to Tammy.
Raven handed a piece to Cindy.
Harry handed a piece to Sally.
"Thank you, Harry!"
"Thank you, Raven!"
"Don't worry about it," Raven replied as she handed out another slice.
Harry added, "You guys are all my friends. Of course I'm going to give you pieces of cake."
Once everyone had a slice, Claire looked satisfied. "All right, you can enjoy your cakes now. You each get half of it. That's a perfectly fair compromise."
Raven and Harry sat down and dug into their halves, savoring every bite. Once they finished, they stepped out of the kitchen, letting the screen door creak behind them.
Harry looked around and said, "It's a shame we didn't get any gifts."
Raven laughed. "Come on, you and I both know we would have gotten gifts if we hadn't asked Claire to buy some extra stuff for the kids this year."
Harry shook his head with a soft smile. "No. A lot of the kids here don't have things as good as you and I do with our own rooms. They deserve to have a few extra treats for Christmas and stuff. I'm more than happy to donate the extra funding that would have gone to our gifts to the other kids."
Raven turned toward him with a gentle look. "You're so generous, Harry."
Harry lifted his eyebrow. "You're the one who's been doing odd jobs around the neighborhood to earn extra money for the kids. You're always giving them lollipops and chocolate."
Raven gave an exaggerated shrug. "What? I'm just entrepreneurial."
"Whatever," Harry said as they stepped out onto the porch.
Two owls soared through the air above them, calling out in rhythm.
"Hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot."
Raven tilted her head upwards, her eyes tracking their path. "Well… I think it's about time."
Harry frowned. "What are owls doing over here in England?"
The owls swooped down gracefully and each dropped a sealed envelope at their feet.
Raven bent down and picked up her letter, eyes scanning the front. She broke the wax seal and opened it.

Term begins on the 1st of September. We await your owl with response to your attendance no later than July 31st.

Raven's lips curved into a smile. "Well, well, well. Looks like things are finally getting interesting."
Harry opened his own letter and read it in silence. It was the same as Raven's.
