Raven hovered in the storm-laced sky above Azkaban, the wind howling around her but never touching the black clothes she now wore. Below, jagged rocks met crashing waves, but her attention was on the air itself. Dozens upon dozens of Dementors were coming from every direction—foul, gliding shadows that carried the stench of hopelessness with them.
One of them drifted closer than the rest. Its shroud looked more like condensed shadow than fabric, fraying into nothingness at the edges, untouched by the wind. Beneath its hood, the thing's face moved in and out of existence, sometimes solid, sometimes transparent, always horrific. Frost spiraled through the air around it as it moved. Raven studied it with a calm expression and said, "They really are terrifying." Tilting her head slightly, her gaze swept the swarm closing in around her. "Well, I might as well try the mind-control magic."
She raised one finger, the Ring of the Cross glowed faintly as she channeled her magic. Her voice came out firm and clear. "Imperio." A surge of magical energy poured through her, concentrated through the ring's gem. The spell flashed outwards, as stream of golden-green light that struck the approaching Dementor directly.
It convulsed midair, its form shifting wildly between states of real and unreal, as a dim green glow came to life inside its hollow eye sockets. Raven narrowed her eyes and laughed softly. "So you're trying to resist my spell, huh?" She lifted her hand again, this time reinforcing the curse with her own magic. "Azeroth. Metreon. Zinthos."
Her aura deepened. A second surge of energy erupted from the ring and wrapped around the floating creature, amplifying the Imperius Curse. The green glow in its eyes flared brighter, more stable now. The creature stopped convulsing. It turned its head, locking onto the other Dementors still rushing Raven.
Without needing orders, it attacked.
The controlled Dementor streaked forwards, slashing across another's skull with a bony claw. The target shredded apart instantly, its form tearing into smoky fragments and dissolving into nothingness. The enslaved Dementor pivoted, claws tearing through a second Dementor, banishing it with one sweeping motion. Then a third floated too close. The controlled Dementor surged forward, grabbed it by the face, and pressed its own mouth against it. The Dementor's Kiss.
The Dementors soul was consumed instantly.
Raven watched as the controlled Dementor's form swelled slightly, its presence growing heavier. The green in its eyes intensified. "Oh. I can power this thing up. Awesome." She gestured lazily toward the swirling battlefield. "Hey, buddy, why don't you go ahead and keep feeding on their souls and banishing them? I'll work on the rest of these guys."
As if it understood, the corrupted Dementor flew off from Raven's side and began tearing through the others with savagery. Raven turned her gaze skyward and narrowed her eyes. More were coming. Dozens more. "Time for a wide-area attack."
She lifted her hand and shouted, "Bombarda Maxima." The Ring of the Cross lit with brilliant orange-gold energy, as a tremendous explosion flew outwards from her position. The air cracked and buckled under the force. Rock, sea spray, and magic surged in all directions as a blinding flash lit up the stormy sky. The explosion engulfed an entire swarm of Dementors mid-flight, tearing them apart as if they were paper caught in a storm. Raven floated still, calmly glancing downwards at the debris field below. "Luckily, I'm not standing on any of these rocks."
As the smoke cleared, a few stragglers remained—some blown apart, others barely intact. One of them flew forwards, aiming straight at her. Raven didn't wait as she said. "Confringo." The Blasting Curse struck the creature, magic moving beneath its black cloak like wildfire. Its cloak began to disintegrate. Then, from within, the spell detonated. The Dementor burst into ash and vanished into the storm.
Another charged at her, faster than the others. She moved her hand again. "Stupefy." The red bolt of magic collided with the Dementor, causing it to shake mid-air. But it recovered almost instantly, shaking off the effect. Raven frowned. "This spell is pretty useless. I don't know why anyone would want to stun the enemy. Just go for the kill."
She looked at target and spoke with a cold tone of voice. "Crucio." The curse slammed into it, and for the first time, the Dementor let out a horrible, piercing shriek. The sound wasn't natural—it twisted through the air like a dying scream. All around her, the swarm reacted.
Every Dementor nearby paused.
Then they all turned towards her at once, their movements no longer slow or drifting, but frantic, erratic, and charged with unnatural energy. Raven watched them swarm in her direction and said to herself, "Oh. They are starting to react."
