Raven looked at Harry and said, "Lead the way. Let's go check on the snake."
Harry nodded. "All right, she is out in a porch area."
They stepped through the hallway and entered the screened porch. Morning sunlight streamed across the floorboards, the air was thick with warmth and humidity.
"All right," Raven said. "Call the snake with your ability."
Harry sighed and gave her a look. "Fine." He turned towards the porch steps and hissed softly, "Come here, Greeny. Come here."
Raven raised an eyebrow. "What did you just say?"
"I said, 'Come here, Greeny, come here,'" Harry replied casually.
Raven raised her hand and gave him a light slap on the back of the head. "You fool. You can't just name a female snake Greeny. That's like naming a snake Squiggly or Thing or Green Green. What kind of naming sense do you have?"
"Come on, hey, take it easy," Harry said. "I never said I was good at naming things. You should know that."
"You're right," Raven said with a long sigh. "I shouldn't expect you to be able to name things. That's usually a female gift."
"Whatever."
Raven turned to him sharply. "What did you say?"
"Nothing, nothing."
"That's what I thought," Raven said with a quiet laugh.
A soft rustle made them both turn. The green garden snake slithered out from the shadow of a potted plant, its body bright green in the light.
Raven stepped forwards and gently picked it up. "We have got to come up with a better name for you. And considering you're a snake, I'm thinking of a legendary name of a snake woman who can stare at people and turn them into stone. So I'm thinking we will call you Medusa."
Harry frowned. "You want to name her after a Greek legend?"
"Who says Medusa is a Greek legend?" Raven replied. "I'll have you know creatures like that might really exist in real life, Harry."
Harry gave her a skeptical look. "As if a snake can actually turn somebody into stone. That's like a petrification power or something."
A cold shiver ran down his spine as Harry blinked. "I feel like I'm going to regret saying that someday, Raven."
"I think you will as well," Raven said, clearly amused.
She brought the snake closer and stroked the back of its head. "From now on, you're sticking with me. And don't worry, I won't let Harry chase you around and call you weird names like Greeny."
The little female garden snake flicked its tongue and let out a soft "Tss," then bobbed its head up and down in what could only be described as agreement.
Raven tilted her head slightly. "It seems to me the snake is nearly two times bigger than it was before."
Harry scratched his cheek. "I don't know. I spent a lot of time napping with it on my leg the other day."
"So it's been spending a lot of time in physical contact with you?" Raven asked.
"Of course. Yeah, it's been basically spending every second of every day with me."
"Then from now on, I'll keep the snake with me," Raven said decisively.
"Hey, wait I take my naps with that snake," Harry protested.
"I don't think that's a good thing for you, Harry."
Harry sighed, defeated. "Fine, fine. But then I'm going to have to find something new to sleep with."
Raven shook her head. "Kids these days, man."
"What are you talking about? You're a kid too."
"I know, Harry, but I'm more emotionally mature than you. I'm a girl."
"Whatever, Raven," Harry said, scratching his head.
Raven turned her attention back to the snake, now resting calmly in her hands, while Harry leaned slightly beside her. If this snake is growing in size by being in physical contact with Harry, Raven thought, it could be absorbing the latent magical power leaking off of him. This snake could be like a magical snake of some kind, where it absorbs magical power to increase its size and power.
She narrowed her eyes. I can feel magical power radiating off this snake similar to Harrys, but the magic that it siphoned off of him has been turned uniquely into this snake's own magic.
I wonder if this snake can absorb my magical power, she thought. Her heart stirred with the idea, a small wave of excitement spreading up her spine. What if this snake can evolve into a human someday? Just like some of those mythological snakes that can change shapes as they grow stronger—they can become flood dragons and then true dragons.
A deep, satisfied smile spread across Raven's face. "That would truly be a glorious sight."
Harry glanced at her. "What are you smiling like that for?"
"Someday this snake is going to turn into a dragon girl," Raven said, her eyes glowing.
Harry burst into laughter. "What are you talking about, Raven? You sure like to dream."
Both Raven and the snake turned and gave him the same unblinking stare.
Harry coughed and quickly corrected himself. "I mean, Medusa is never going to turn into a dragon girl."
Raven nodded, amused. "I don't know. I just have a feeling that this snake is not normal, Harry. And in the future, I'm sure you will come to recognize this fact. You're just not enlightened enough yet."
Harry straightened his back and lifted his chin. "What do you mean I'm not enlightened? I'm almost eleven years old."
"Oh, right," Raven said with a light sigh. "We're almost eleven now, aren't we? It's hard to believe that so many months have already gone by living at this orphanage. Have you heard about how your former adopted parents were doing?"
Harry let out a laugh. "Don't even get me started on them."
