Chapter 28 - Chapter 27The Mistake That Wasn’t Mine

The worst part about being set up…

is not the fall.

It's watching everyone believe

you jumped.

[Isle POV]

I didn't rush.

Even though everything in me wanted to.

I walked slowly out of the house.

The folder held tightly in my hands.

My grip firm.

Controlled.

Every step felt calculated.

Every movement… deliberate.

Because I knew…

this wasn't just a task.

This was a test.

And somewhere…

she was waiting for me to fail.

[Isle POV – Outside / Road]

The road to the school felt longer than usual.

My mind replayed everything.

The fake signature.

The complaint.

The sudden "trust."

All connected.

All intentional.

So this time…

I wouldn't give her an opening.

I adjusted the folder again.

Checked the contents.

Everything was there.

Everything was correct.

Good.

But something still felt off.

Not in the papers.

In the timing.

It was too easy.

Too clean.

And that meant…

something was coming.

[Isle POV – School Office]

The same office.

The same chair.

But this time…

I wasn't nervous.

I was ready.

"I've brought the documents," I said calmly.

The teacher nodded.

"Good. Let me check."

She opened the folder.

Page by page.

Carefully.

Silently.

My eyes stayed on her face.

Watching every reaction.

Every shift.

Then…

it happened.

Her expression changed.

Slightly.

But enough.

My chest tightened.

"What is it?" I asked.

She looked up.

"This section…" she said slowly,

"is incomplete."

My heart dropped.

"What?"

She turned the paper toward me.

And I saw it.

A missing signature.

A required field…

left blank.

"No," I said immediately.

"I checked everything."

"I'm sure you did," she replied carefully,

"but it's not here."

My mind raced.

Impossible.

I checked it.

More than once.

It was there.

I knew it was there.

Unless…

Unless it was removed.

Changed.

Tampered.

"You can complete it now," she added.

Simple solution.

Easy fix.

But something about it felt wrong.

Too convenient.

Too familiar.

Like before.

Like every time.

Where the solution made me look careless.

Where the mistake became mine.

"I didn't leave this blank," I said.

My voice steady.

Not defensive.

Not desperate.

Just… certain.

The teacher hesitated.

Then said,

"Let's not overcomplicate this."

That line again.

Different words.

Same meaning.

Just fix it.

Don't question it.

But this time…

I didn't move immediately.

Instead…

I looked closer.

Carefully.

And that's when I saw it.

A faint mark.

A slight indentation.

Like something had been erased.

My breath slowed.

There it was.

Not clean.

Not perfect.

A mistake.

Her mistake.

[Isle POV – Realization Extended]

She had removed it.

But not completely.

Not perfectly.

Because she didn't expect me to look this closely.

She didn't expect me to stay calm.

She didn't expect me…

to think.

"You're right," I said suddenly.

The teacher looked surprised.

"It looks incomplete."

I picked up the pen slowly.

"But before I fill it again…"

I paused.

Then pointed lightly.

"There's something here."

She leaned closer.

Frowned.

"Is that…?"

"An erased signature," I said calmly.

Silence.

Her expression changed.

From certainty…

to confusion.

Then to concern.

"This wasn't blank," I added.

Now my voice carried weight.

Not emotion.

Not panic.

Just… clarity.

"I filled it. Someone erased it."

The room went quiet.

Different this time.

Not dismissive.

Not uncomfortable.

Serious.

The teacher sat back slightly.

"That's… not normal," she said.

"No," I replied.

"It isn't."

For the first time…

the narrative didn't turn against me immediately.

For the first time…

there was doubt.

Not about me.

About the situation.

And that…

changed everything.

[Husband POV – Arrival Extended]

He arrived again.

Expecting the same situation.

The same confusion.

The same uncertainty.

But what he walked into…

was different.

"This doesn't look like a mistake," the teacher was saying.

His steps slowed.

"What happened?" he asked.

Both of them looked at him.

And for the first time…

Isle spoke without hesitation.

"Someone tampered with the form."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

But this time…

it didn't sound unstable.

It sounded… certain.

He looked at the paper.

At the faint mark.

At the erased section.

And for the first time…

something shifted in him.

Because this…

was visible.

Real.

Not just words.

Not just claims.

Something he could see.

And that made it harder to dismiss.

"This wasn't there before," Isle added.

The teacher nodded slowly.

"It does look altered."

Silence followed.

But this silence…

was different.

It didn't blame her.

It questioned everything else.

[Isle POV – Return Home]

The ride back felt different.

Not victorious.

Not safe.

But… balanced.

For the first time…

I hadn't fallen.

For the first time…

I hadn't looked wrong.

But I knew…

this wasn't over.

Not even close.

Because if she made a mistake once…

she wouldn't make it again.

She would adjust.

She would become more careful.

More precise.

More dangerous.

[Isle POV – Night]

I stood in my room again.

The paper in my hand.

The faint mark still visible.

Proof.

Small.

But real.

A soft knock.

Then the door opened.

She stepped in.

Of course.

"You noticed," she said softly.

Not a question.

A statement.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then she smiled.

But this time…

it was different.

Not calm.

Not playful.

Something sharper.

Something… impressed.

"You're learning faster than I expected," she said.

I held her gaze.

"You made a mistake."

Her smile deepened slightly.

"No," she replied.

My brows furrowed.

Then she stepped closer.

And whispered…

"I let you find it."

My breath stopped.

Because something about that…

felt possible.

Terrifyingly possible.

"Why?" I asked quietly.

Her eyes softened slightly.

"For this moment."

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Because I didn't understand.

Not fully.

But I felt it.

Something deeper was happening.

Something beyond just winning or losing.

"This isn't just a game to you," I said slowly.

Her expression changed.

For a brief second…

something real appeared again.

Then it vanished.

"It never was," she said softly.

And just like that…

the tension shifted again.

Because now…

I knew something for certain.

She wasn't just trying to break me.

She was trying to pull me somewhere.

Somewhere I didn't understand yet.

And that…

was far more dangerous.
