Chapter 27 - Chapter 26The Trap That Looked Like Trust

The most dangerous traps…

don't feel like traps.

They feel like chances.

Like trust.

Like something finally going right.

And that's why…

you walk into them willingly.

[Isle POV]

The next morning felt… lighter.

Not because things were better.

But because something had shifted inside me.

I wasn't expecting fairness anymore.

I wasn't expecting understanding.

I was expecting moves.

Her moves.

And that changed how I saw everything.

So when my mother called me into the living room…

I didn't go with fear.

I went with awareness.

"Sit," she said.

My father was there.

My husband too.

And for the first time in days…

Mian wasn't in the room.

That alone felt strange.

"Is something wrong?" I asked.

My mother exchanged a glance with my father.

Then said carefully,

"We've been thinking…"

Thinking.

That word made my chest tighten slightly.

"About what?"

My father spoke this time.

"The house has been… tense lately."

Again that word.

Tense.

"But we don't want things to stay like this," my mother added.

I stayed silent.

Listening.

Watching.

"We feel like… maybe responsibilities should be divided more clearly," my husband said.

Divided.

"Divided how?" I asked.

"So there's no confusion," he continued.

"No misunderstandings."

Misunderstandings.

Everything sounded reasonable.

Too reasonable.

My instincts stirred.

"And?" I asked.

My mother smiled gently.

"We thought you could handle certain things again."

Again.

That word hit differently.

"What things?"

"House management, schedules, your child's school matters…" she listed.

My heart skipped.

School.

After everything that happened.

After the complaint.

After the forged signature.

And now…

they were giving it back to me?

That didn't make sense.

Unless…

Unless it was meant to fail.

I looked at them carefully.

Their expressions were genuine.

Concerned.

Hopeful.

Not manipulative.

Because they weren't the ones planning this.

She was.

And suddenly…

I understood.

This wasn't their idea.

It was hers.

[Isle POV – Internal Realization Extended]

Of course it was.

She wouldn't remove me completely.

That would be too obvious.

Too extreme.

Instead…

she would give me just enough control…

so I could fail publicly.

So I could prove…

that I wasn't reliable.

So that when everything collapsed again…

it wouldn't look like her doing.

It would look like mine.

A trap disguised as trust.

Perfect.

Always perfect.

"Is that okay?" my mother asked softly.

I looked at her.

Then at my father.

Then at my husband.

And finally…

I imagined her.

Watching this from a distance.

Waiting.

Expecting me to accept.

To step into it.

To prove her right.

And for a moment…

I wanted to refuse.

To say no.

To avoid it completely.

But then…

another thought came.

If I refused…

it would look like I couldn't handle it.

If I accepted…

I could prepare.

I could watch.

I could catch her.

Maybe.

And that "maybe"…

was enough.

"I'll do it," I said calmly.

Silence followed.

Then relief.

"That's good," my father said.

My mother smiled.

"Yes, this will help."

My husband nodded slightly.

And just like that…

the decision was made.

The trap was set.

And I had walked into it.

Knowingly.

[Husband POV – Extended]

He felt relieved.

Finally…

something was being fixed.

Something was returning to normal.

Isle taking responsibility again…

felt right.

Familiar.

Like things were going back to how they should be.

But a small part of him…

still felt uncertain.

Because Isle didn't look relieved.

She looked… calm.

Too calm.

Like she knew something he didn't.

And that feeling…

lingered.

Uncomfortable.

But not strong enough…

to make him question further.

[Isle POV – Afternoon]

The first test came quickly.

Too quickly.

"Isle, can you handle the school submission today?" my mother asked.

Of course.

Of course it would start there.

"Yes," I said.

I took the documents carefully.

Checked everything.

Twice.

Then a third time.

Every detail.

Every signature.

Every page.

Because I knew…

one mistake…

was all it would take.

I placed everything in a folder.

Kept it close.

Not leaving it anywhere.

Not trusting any space.

Because now…

everything was a risk.

Everything could be used.

Everything could be turned against me.

[Isle POV – The Setup]

I was about to leave…

when my child ran toward me.

"Wait! I forgot something!"

I paused.

"What?"

"My drawing… it's in my room!"

I hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then nodded.

"Go get it," I said.

They ran.

Fast.

Excited.

And in that moment…

I stood alone.

Holding the folder.

Waiting.

A small pause.

A small opening.

A small moment…

where something could happen.

And that's when I felt it.

That presence.

Behind me.

I turned slowly.

She was there.

Of course.

Always there.

"You accepted," she said softly.

I tightened my grip on the folder.

"I did."

A pause.

Then she stepped closer.

"You shouldn't have."

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"Why?"

Her lips curved faintly.

"Because now… it becomes easier."

A chill ran through me.

"For you?" I asked.

"For us," she corrected again.

That word.

Again.

Always that word.

"This won't work," I said.

She tilted her head slightly.

"It already is."

Silence.

Then she stepped closer.

Too close.

And whispered…

"You're exactly where I need you to be."

My breath slowed.

But I didn't step back.

Not this time.

"Maybe," I said quietly.

Her eyes darkened slightly.

Then I added…

"But you're closer than you think too."

A pause.

For the first time…

she didn't respond immediately.

Just looked at me.

Longer than usual.

As if trying to understand what I meant.

Then…

she smiled.

But this time…

it wasn't fully confident.

Something in it had shifted.

"Be careful," she said softly.

And stepped back.

Then turned…

and walked away.

Leaving me there.

With the folder in my hand.

And something new in my chest.

Not fear.

Not uncertainty.

But something else.

Something dangerous.

Hope.

Because for the first time…

I felt it.

She wasn't completely in control anymore.

Not entirely.

And that meant…

this game…

was finally changing.
