Chapter 1 - THE SILENT TOPPER

Chapter 1: The Silent Topper

The morning sun bathed the grand campus of Imperial National University, Mumbai, in golden light. Known as one of India's most prestigious universities, it welcomed students from every corner of the country. Some came to chase dreams, while others came to prove themselves.

Among them was Surya Sharma.

Unlike the noisy students laughing in the corridors, Surya walked quietly toward Classroom A-12. A backpack rested on one shoulder, and a thick physics book remained open in his hands as he walked. His expression never changed. To most students, he looked cold and distant.

But to the professors, he was a genius.

Surya consistently ranked first in every examination. He never joined campus festivals, sports events, or student clubs. He spoke only when necessary and spent most of his free time in the library.

Inside the classroom, his best friend Arjun Mehta waved enthusiastically.

"Surya! Over here!"

Surya nodded and took the seat beside him.

"You know," Arjun whispered, "today is the first day of the semester. At least pretend to smile."

"I came here to study," Surya replied calmly. "Not to entertain people."

Arjun sighed.

"You really are impossible."

Before the lecture could begin, the classroom door swung open.

Three boys entered with loud laughter.

Leading them was Yash Malhotra, the son of a powerful businessman. He considered himself the king of the first-year students. His expensive watch, designer shoes, and arrogant smile attracted attention wherever he went.

His friends, Rohan and Kabir, followed closely behind.

Yash looked around the classroom before his eyes settled on Surya.

"So that's the famous topper."

Several students exchanged nervous glances.

Everyone knew Yash enjoyed humiliating quiet students.

He walked over to Surya's desk and knocked on it twice.

"Hey, genius."

Surya continued reading without looking up.

Yash smiled.

"I was talking to you."

No response.

The classroom fell silent.

Rohan chuckled.

"I think he can't hear you."

Yash grabbed Surya's book and closed it with a loud slap.

"Now listen."

Slowly, Surya raised his eyes.

"What do you want?"

His voice was calm.

No fear.

No anger.

Just a simple question.

Yash frowned.

"I don't like your attitude."

"And I don't remember asking for your opinion," Surya answered.

The classroom gasped.

Nobody had ever spoken to Yash like that.

For a moment, Yash was speechless.

Then he laughed.

"You've got courage."

"I have better things to do than argue."

Surya reopened his book.

Ignoring him completely.

The smile disappeared from Yash's face.

His pride had taken a direct hit.

"Fine," he muttered. "Let's see how long you stay this confident."

Just then, Professor Anand Verma entered the classroom.

"Everyone, take your seats."

The lecture began.

For the next hour, Surya answered every difficult question with ease.

Even the professor seemed impressed.

"Excellent, Surya. Your understanding is remarkable."

The praise only made Yash more irritated.

During lunch break, Surya walked alone toward the library.

Yash watched him from the cafeteria balcony.

"He embarrassed me in front of everyone," he said through clenched teeth.

Kabir smirked.

"What do we do?"

Yash's eyes narrowed.

"We break that calm expression on his face."

The next day, Yash put his plan into action.

Before Surya arrived, someone secretly hid a student's expensive tablet inside Surya's backpack.

Minutes later, loud shouting echoed through the classroom.

"My tablet is missing!"

Students searched everywhere.

Finally, Yash pointed toward Surya.

"Maybe we should check his bag."

The room became silent.

Surya looked at him for a moment before placing his backpack on the desk.

"Go ahead."

Yash smiled confidently.

"This is where your act ends."

He unzipped the bag.

But the moment he reached inside...

His confident smile vanished.

The tablet wasn't there.

Instead, there was only Surya's books and notebooks.

Yash froze.

He had personally watched the tablet being hidden.

Then where had it gone?

Surya quietly picked up a small black object from the desk.

"A wireless security camera," he said.

"I noticed someone touching my bag before class, so I placed this recorder inside this morning."

He looked directly at Yash.

"It recorded everything."

The classroom erupted into whispers.

For the first time, Yash realized he had underestimated the silent topper.

Surya wasn't just intelligent.

He was always one step ahead.

And this was only the beginning.
