It was the weekend, and New York City was as alive as ever.
Crowds filled the streets, neon signs flickered across towering buildings, and the constant hum of traffic blended into the rhythm of the city. It was loud, chaotic, and vibrant—everything that made it feel like the center of the world.
"Hey! Wes, hurry up!" Polaris called out, turning back with a slight frown when she noticed Levis lagging behind.
Levis let out a long sigh, dragging his steps just a little before picking up the pace. "Yeah, yeah, I'm coming."
Polaris had insisted on this trip. Ever since finding out he could teleport freely, she'd decided there was no reason to stay cooped up at the academy all the time. New York was practically next door for him now—just a thought away.
And so, here they were.
Levis wasn't particularly interested in shopping or wandering crowded streets. If anything, he would've preferred spending the time studying or experimenting with his abilities. But with his enhanced cognition, even that had become almost unnecessary.
With his super-intelligence, his brain processed information like a living supercomputer. Combined with electromagnetic manipulation, he could directly access and absorb data from digital networks. Physics, engineering, theoretical models—most of it was already stored and organized in his mind.
There was nothing left to "study" in the traditional sense.
Which only made this outing feel even more pointless.
Still, he followed along.
Polaris, noticing his lack of enthusiasm, didn't complain. Instead, she closed the distance between them and casually hooked her arm through his, leaning slightly against him as they walked.
To anyone watching, they looked like a couple out on a relaxed date.
Levis didn't pull away.
Over time, he had grown used to her presence—her closeness, her boldness. At first, it had been something he instinctively resisted, but now it felt… normal.
Polaris understood him better than most. She knew he wasn't the type to rush into things or respond to intensity with equal intensity. So she adjusted, keeping things natural, letting the connection build without forcing it.
They wandered through the streets for a while before arriving at a massive shopping complex. The towering structure was covered in enormous LED displays, constantly shifting with advertisements and live broadcasts.
That was when something unusual caught their attention.
"Emergency alert: A terrorist incident has occurred in New York City. All civilians are advised to evacuate the area immediately."
The message repeated across multiple screens, flashing urgently.
People in the square slowed down, confusion spreading as they tried to process what they were seeing. Some stopped to stare, others began checking their phones, and a low murmur of uncertainty rippled through the crowd.
Then—
BOOM.
The ground trembled violently.
It wasn't subtle. The vibration was strong enough to make people lose their balance, and a second impact followed almost immediately, sending another wave of shock through the area.
"It's an earthquake! Run!"
Panic erupted.
People screamed, pushing past each other as they tried to escape. The orderly flow of the crowd shattered instantly, replaced by chaos. Within seconds, the entire square turned into a stampede of fear.
Polaris steadied herself, her eyes narrowing as she looked toward the source of the tremors. "What the hell is going on over there?"
Levis didn't answer right away.
Instead, he reached out with his telepathy, his consciousness expanding outward in an instant. What he found made the corners of his mouth curl upward slightly.
"That's… not a terrorist attack," he said, his tone carrying a hint of amusement. "Something way more interesting."
Polaris blinked, curiosity immediately taking over. "Interesting?"
Levis didn't explain. He simply grabbed her arm and activated his teleportation.
Space folded.
In the blink of an eye, they reappeared atop a nearby high-rise, the entire city stretching out beneath them. From this vantage point, the source of the chaos was impossible to miss.
Polaris's eyes widened.
"What… is that?"
Down below, in the middle of the street, stood a massive creature.
It was easily over three meters tall, its body thick and muscular, its skin a sickly yellow tone. Every movement it made carried immense weight, each step slamming into the ground with enough force to shake the surrounding buildings.
Cars were tossed aside like toys. Concrete cracked under its feet. Entire sections of the street were reduced to rubble as it rampaged without restraint.
The so-called "earthquake" was nothing more than the result of its destruction.
Screams echoed through the streets as civilians fled in every direction, their panic only growing as the monster continued its rampage.
Levis narrowed his eyes slightly, recognition flashing across his face. "Abomination…"
He hadn't expected this.
If Abomination was here, then that meant—
Levis glanced upward.
Sure enough, a military helicopter hovered in the sky above the chaos.
General Ross.
And somewhere nearby…
Banner.
"Abomination?" Polaris repeated, clearly confused. "Is that a mutant? I've never seen anything like that."
Levis chuckled at her reaction, shaking his head. "Not a mutant. That thing's man-made."
Polaris turned to him sharply. "Created by humans? Why would anyone make something like that?"
Levis shrugged, his gaze still fixed on the destruction below. "Power. Same reason for most bad decisions."
Humans feared mutants, suppressed them, tried to control them. Yet at the same time, they chased after power with reckless obsession, willing to create monsters if it meant gaining an edge.
It was contradictory.
And predictable.
Down below, military units had already moved in. Armed soldiers took positions, opening fire on the creature with everything they had. Gunfire echoed through the streets, followed by the launch of heavier weapons.
Rocket launchers fired.
Explosions erupted against Abomination's body.
And did nothing.
The creature barely reacted. One of the rockets flew straight toward it, only for Abomination to catch it mid-air with one hand. With a casual squeeze, the missile detonated harmlessly in its grip, flames and shrapnel dispersing without leaving a mark.
Then, slowly, it turned its attention toward the soldiers.
Now it had a target.
The situation deteriorated instantly.
The soldiers' attacks had been ineffective before. Now they were provoking something far worse. Within moments, their formation collapsed under the creature's assault, casualties mounting rapidly.
Up in the helicopter, General Ross's expression turned grim.
There was only one option left.
Beside him, Dr. Bruce Banner stood tense, knowing exactly what was coming.
Moments later, a massive green figure dropped from the helicopter, slamming into the street below with tremendous force.
At the same time, amidst the chaos, a female reporter continued broadcasting live, her voice strained but determined as she stood dangerously close to the unfolding disaster.
"My God… what is that thing? Is this the end of the world? Who can stop it—"
Her words were cut short.
A massive impact slammed into the ground right beside her, blasting a crater into the street.
