Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 – The Man S.H.I.E.L.D. Can’t Ignore

While Levis was still in Professor X's office, discussing plans that could reshape the future of mutants, events were already unfolding elsewhere.

Far away from the academy, Phil Coulson had returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. The moment he stepped inside, his usual relaxed demeanor gave way to something more focused, his pace steady as he made his way directly to the director's office.

"Director," Coulson said as he pushed the door open and walked in.

Behind the desk sat a man with a commanding presence, his dark skin and eyepatch immediately recognizable. Nick Fury didn't look up right away, his attention still on the documents in his hands, but his voice came out sharp and direct.

"Well? Did you find him?"

Coulson shrugged slightly, stepping further into the room. "I didn't get to meet many students up close. But if we're talking about that person… I've got a strong lead."

That was enough to make Fury finally lift his gaze. His single eye locked onto Coulson, sharp and probing. "Who?"

Coulson didn't rush his answer. "There was a student. Young guy. Name's Levis. He was the one who led me to Professor X's office. But that's not the interesting part."

Fury leaned back slightly, his attention fully engaged now. "Go on."

Coulson spread his hands lightly, his tone calm but certain. "While I was there, Professor X mentioned that Magneto was looking for him. Think about that. Why would Magneto—of all people—go out of his way to find a student?"

The implication hung in the air, clear and undeniable.

Fury's expression darkened slightly as he processed it. "Meaning that kid isn't just a student."

"Exactly," Coulson said with a small nod.

If Levis had been there to hear it, he would've had to admit—Coulson's instincts were sharp. With just a single line from Professor X, he had already connected the dots.

Coulson stepped forward and placed a stack of documents on Fury's desk. "There's more. We pulled satellite footage from Liberty Island."

Fury glanced down, then shifted his attention to the monitor in front of him. The screen flickered to life, showing grainy, slightly distorted footage. Despite the low quality, the scene was unmistakable.

The battle.

Magneto, controlling steel with terrifying precision.

And another figure—blurred, indistinct—but clearly overpowering him.

The footage continued, showing the moment the shattered statue was restored in an instant, metal reforming as if time itself had reversed.

Fury's jaw tightened slightly.

"That's him?" he asked, his voice low.

"I'm about ninety percent sure," Coulson replied. "And there's more. He was also involved in rescuing Polaris from detention in Mexico."

Fury didn't respond immediately. His eye remained fixed on the screen, replaying the moment again in his mind.

"A kid," he muttered under his breath. "And he can push Magneto back like that?"

Coulson let out a small breath, his own disbelief still lingering. "That's not even the most surprising part. That ability… restoring the statue… I've never seen anything like it."

Even now, it didn't sit right with him. The footage looked almost unreal, like something that shouldn't exist outside of myth.

Fury exhaled slowly, forcing himself to stay grounded. "He's a mutant. We've seen stranger things."

"Maybe," Coulson said, though his tone suggested he wasn't entirely convinced. "But according to what I found, that's just one of his abilities."

That made Fury's gaze snap back to the documents.

He flipped through them quickly, scanning the compiled data.

Reflection. Cryokinesis. Teleportation. Electromagnetism.

And then—an unknown ability capable of reconstructing matter itself.

Fury's expression hardened, the tension in his posture becoming more apparent the longer he read.

"All of this… in one person?" he said quietly.

For the first time in a long while, he felt something close to unease.

This wasn't just another mutant. This was something else entirely.

"Feels like he's trying to become a god," Fury added, his voice carrying a trace of dry humor that didn't quite hide the seriousness beneath it.

Coulson didn't argue.

In fact, he couldn't.

There was something about Levis that didn't fit into any normal category. The more they uncovered, the more unpredictable he seemed.

Fury closed the file and set it down, his decision made.

"Leave it for now," he said finally. "As long as he's under Professor X's supervision, he shouldn't cause any problems."

Coulson nodded. For the time being, that was the most reasonable approach.

But both of them knew—this wasn't something they could ignore forever.

A week passed in the blink of an eye.

The aftermath of the Liberty Island incident settled into an uneasy calm. As expected, Magneto had been handed over to a military facility, officially detained to satisfy the authorities.

It was more for appearances than anything else.

Despite everything that had happened, the damage had been minimal. Still, the government needed to show they were taking action. Magneto, as always, became the focal point.

In reality, no one dared to truly harm him.

The Brotherhood of Mutants was still active, still dangerous. Without Magneto's presence keeping them in check, the situation could spiral out of control. The military understood that well enough.

So instead of punishment, Magneto was given something closer to containment—with all the comforts necessary to keep things stable.

For him, it was nothing more than a temporary pause.

If he wanted to leave, there wasn't a prison on Earth that could hold him.

Meanwhile, Levis spent the week preparing for the laboratory project. Most of the groundwork had already been handed over to the Stepford Cuckoos, whose shared telepathic link made coordination effortless.

With a single thought, instructions could be passed instantly.

That decision alone saved him an enormous amount of time and effort. If anything, it only reinforced how valuable it had been to keep them alive and under control instead of eliminating them.

Outside of that, his days remained surprisingly relaxed.

Of course, that didn't mean he had been idle.

Over the course of the week, Levis completed several more check-ins.

From Wolverine, he obtained enhanced regenerative abilities—superior healing that pushed his body's recovery to another level entirely. From Cyclops, he gained optic energy projection, adding another destructive option to his arsenal.

From the White Queen, he acquired diamond transformation, allowing his body to harden into an indestructible crystalline state. While useful, it didn't excite him much compared to his other abilities.

And from Mystique, he gained shapeshifting.

That one stood out.

The ability to transform into anyone, perfectly mimicking appearance, voice, and physical presence. Within the limits of human forms, it was as versatile as it was dangerous.

As for Jean and Professor X, their check-ins didn't grant new abilities. Instead, like Magneto, they provided double experience—further accelerating his overall growth.

Even without new powers, Levis's strength continued to climb steadily, layer by layer, moving him closer to something that couldn't easily be defined.
