Chapter 18 - An Answer

- Julien Grayson:

For several long seconds after he said it, I didn't move.

"Because I am one."

The words lingered in the air like smoke, quiet but heavy enough that I could almost feel them pressing against my chest.

An Enigma.

I had heard the word my whole life. My father is one. I knew what that meant—stronger than alphas, rarer than anything most packs ever saw in their lifetime, powerful in ways that people whispered about but rarely explained out loud.

But something about the man standing in front of me didn't match the image in my head.

My fingers tightened around the piece of bread in my hand as I slowly chewed the bite I had just taken. The crust cracked softly between my teeth, and the warm inside of the bread melted against my tongue along with the cheese that had softened into it.

It tasted incredible.

It tasted fresh and rich and warm in a way that made it painfully obvious that I had barely eaten anything since yesterday morning.
