Chapter 22 - Staring

-Julien Grayson:

I kept staring.

I couldn't help it.

My eyes were locked on his back, more specifically on the thing that shouldn't have been there—on the tail that moved slightly with the subtle shift of his body, the dark fur catching the dim light filtering through the trees.

A tail.

He had a tail.

Not just when he shifted. Not as a wolf.

Here. Like this. In human form.

My breath felt uneven, my chest rising and falling slower than it should as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. I had grown up around wolves my entire life. I knew what shifting looked and felt like, what partial shifts looked like, what control looked like.

This wasn't any of that.

"I…" My voice came out quieter than I expected, almost like I didn't want to disturb whatever this was. "I've never seen that before."

He didn't move.

Didn't turn.

But I could tell he was listening.
