Chapter 28 - Next Time

-Julien Grayson:

I watched him look at me.

For a second—just a second—his eyes met mine, and whatever storm had been raging inside them began to quiet. The red, the black, the silver… it all receded, fading slowly until there was nothing left but a deep, steady brown. Human. Calm. But his face… it wasn't. There was something heavy in it, something tight, like he was holding himself together by force.

Then he turned away.

He didn't say a word. Didn't wait. He just started walking.

And I didn't hesitate. 

I know he said not to leave, but the danger's gone. I was already moving, already pushing the door open. 

I rushed outside.

"Ezra!"

I called his name once as I stepped out, my voice echoing slightly against the trees. No answer. He didn't even slow down. He just kept walking, his back to me, broad shoulders tense, his entire body still covered in blood.

"Ezra!" I called again, louder this time, quickening my pace.

Still nothing.

So I ran.
