We had been walking for over an hour, and it was becoming painfully obvious that Julien was not enjoying it in the slightest. He wasn't even trying to hide it. Every step he took felt heavier than the last, his pace slowing, his posture slumping just enough to show how tired he was, even if he tried to keep up with me.


I glanced back at him, finding him leaning against a tree, one hand braced against the rough bark while he caught his breath. His hair clung slightly to his forehead from the effort, his cheeks faintly flushed, his lips parted as he inhaled deeply. He looked… exhausted.


The woods stretched endlessly around us—tall trees, thick trunks, shadows layered over shadows as the light filtered through the canopy above. To me, it was familiar. Easy. The ground beneath my feet felt like something I had walked a thousand times before, every shift in scent, every subtle change in direction clear in my mind.
