Chapter 36 - Out

I held Ezra closer, feeling the huge, yet fragile weight of him pressed against my chest, his body trembling slightly as I brushed damp strands of hair from his face. His breaths were uneven, shallow, like he was still trapped somewhere between consciousness and sleep, and every soft whimper that escaped him made my chest tighten with a mixture of fear, anger, and protectiveness.

I kept murmuring apologies over and over, my voice breaking in the echoing hallways, "I'm so sorry… I'm so sorry, Ezra. I should have known they'd do something like this. I should have protected you…" Each word felt heavy, loaded with the guilt and frustration I couldn't contain, the helplessness I had felt watching him lying there in that cell, powerless and broken.
