The sound of sirens penetrated through the building.
"I thought I told you guys to hold off on calling the police," Mark said and ran to meet them.
"Are there any weapons in the house?" an officer asked as he walked in.
A number of them entered the bedroom and witnessed the alleged murder.
"Nathan Payne, you are under arrest for the suspicion of the murder of your girlfriend," an officer said as she cuffed his hands behind him.
She read him his Miranda rights as she walked him away. He was taken to the paper mill police department. There they processed him and placed him in a cell.
In about an hour, they got him in front of a judge with a public defender.
"How do you plead?" the judge asked.
"Not guilty your honor," the public defender answered.
"I think I did it," Nathan said to the lawyer.
"Keep quiet, I'm trying to help you," the lawyer scolded him.
"You honor, I have a lawyer who will be here any moment," Nathan said.
"Mr Payne, that's fine but to not waste time counselor Kane will defend you just for today," the judge explained and Ms Kane nodded in agreement.
"You honor with the matter of bail…," Counselor Kane was immediately interrupted.
"Bail is denied," the judge said.
"Your honor he is a first-time offender," Counselor Kane argued.
"Miss Kane it seems you don't know your client. There have been countless charges against him but they all seem to disappear," the judge said.
"Your honor, like you said the charges were dropped," Miss Kane clarified.
"He has the means to disappear, no bail," the Judge iterated.
The whole arraignment process happened in the blink of an eye. Fortunately or unfortunately, he was remanded to Rotham Prison before his preliminary hearing.
The slow wheels of justice moved and Nathan felt every minute of it. He got to the prison around midnight.
As he was being walked to his cell, just when he thought everyone was asleep. Someone reached out to grab him through the metal bars that kept them in their cages.
As soon as his cell door opened his cellmate woke up.
"Hamok, stay in bed," the guard commanded.
He closed the cell door then asked Nathan to stick his hands out so he could take off the handcuffs.
"Snore and I'll slit your throat," his cellmate said when the guard walked away.
Tears rolled down Nathan's cheeks.
'Jenny is really dead?' he thought as he got into bed.
