Chapter 83 - I Killed Her

The world spun, and Nathan watched his bloody hands as he walked away. He walked out of the room and immediately vomited.

"What's wrong?" Mark asked as he helped him up.

"She is dead," Nathan said.

"Who, who is dead?" Mark asked but when Nathan did not respond he went into the room. On the ground was Jenny with a knife planted firmly in her back.

"Someone call 911," Mark heard Nathan yell from outside.

"No, no one call 911," Mark said and snatched a mobile phone from one of the household staff.

"Tell me what happened," Mark commanded.

"I...I went to meet Uncle Charlie. We had a few drinks and I blacked out. When I woke up Jenny was bleeding on the floor," Nathan explained.

"You met Uncle Charlie two days ago," Mark said.

"No, I had drinks with Uncle Charlie yesternight," Nathan insisted and pulled out his phone.

As he stared at the date on his phone he dropped it. He lost sensation in his leg but Mark caught him before he could fall.

A WEEK AND THREE DAYS AGO

After Nathan talked to Uncle Charlie, he went back upstairs to his bedroom.

"Jenny," he called but there was no answer. As he walked by the living room he noticed her. She turned and looked at Nathan and turned right back at the television.

He walked over and sat by her on the couch. Immediately he did she shifted. Nathan got closer but she pulled away again.

"Did I do something?" Nathan asked.

"Where did you go?" she asked.

"I went to see Jane, she had some information about my father's murder," Nathan explained.

Jenny sighed.

"What? Just say it," Nathan encouraged.

"I think you should let it go," Jenny said casually.

"What do you mean?" Nathan asked.

"This whole finding you fathers killer is making you miserable," Jenny explained.

"I can't believe you said that," Nathan said and walked away.

The two did not talk again for days.

Meanwhile at Rotham Prison. An officer walked into Warden Jade's office.

"I think you should see this," the guard said and handed the warden a printout.

"Nathan Payne, accept him," the warden ordered.

"As a guard here?" the officer asked and Jade glared at him.

"Okay, I'll start on the paperwork," the guard added and walked out.

Immediately the officer left, and he called the commissioner.

"Sir, this is Officer Walter. You told me to inform you of any suspicious activities," the office said.

"Speak," the commissioner said on the other end of the call.

"Yes, A Nathan Payne applied to be a guard at the prison. The warden had approved his application," Officer Walter reported.

"Do as the warden says. I'll handle the rest," the commissioner instructed.

Days later Uncle Charlie called to give Nathan the good news.

"Officer Nathan Summers, you have been accepted as a guard at Rotham Penitentiary," Uncle Charlie said over the phone.

"Really?" Nathan yelled.

"Yes, you start in a week with six month on the job training. It is a probationary position though," Uncle Charlie explained.

"That's fine, thank you," Nathan replied.

"I'll let you know where to meet for your IDs and other stuff you would need," Charlie said.

"Okay, thanks again," Nathan said.

Uncle Charlie called two days later and told Nathan where to meet.

It was a dinner by the side of the road. He got in and Uncle Charlie waved to get his attention. They exchanged pleasantries and Uncle Charlie handed Nathan a brown envelope.

The waitress approached their table and they ordered. When the waitress came back with Nathan's order she spilled his orange juice on him.

"Sorry," the waitress apologized and tried to help him clean up.

"It's fine," he said and got up and went to the washroom.

"Did you break up with someone too?" a man said and Nathan looked at him.

It was the commissioner.

"I broke up with my girlfriend and she poured coffee on me," the commissioner said.

"No, this wasn't on purpose," Nathan replied.

"Hey, at least she is not a monster. She waited for the coffee to get cold before pouring it on me," the commissioner said and chuckled.

Nathan let out an awkward laugh.

"You love them but sometimes they do stuff that makes you want to stab them," the commissioner said an Nathan smiled.

He dried his shirt with a paper towel as he walked away.
