Chapter 7 - Bigger secret drops

🌙 Part 7: The Secret He Couldn't Bury

The music was still playing.

The lights were still glowing.

But the warmth of the festival had shifted.

The girl standing in front of Zayn wasn't smiling.

"Elara, right?" she said calmly.

Elara nodded slowly.

"I'm Naira."

The name meant nothing to Elara.

But the way Zayn went completely still — that meant everything.

"We need to talk. Now." Naira's voice was controlled, but urgent.

Zayn glanced at Elara. "It's not what you think."

"Then explain," Elara replied quietly.

Naira let out a short breath. "He hasn't told you, has he?"

"Told me what?" Elara asked.

Silence.

The festival lights flickered behind them. Laughter echoed from the stage. The world kept moving — but their small circle froze.

"He didn't come to Northbridge by accident," Naira said finally.

Zayn's jaw tightened. "Stop."

"No," she said firmly. "She deserves to know."

Elara's heartbeat slowed — the way it does before something falls.

"Last year," Naira continued, "there was an investigation."

"Investigation?" Elara repeated.

Zayn stepped forward. "It wasn't like that."

Naira's eyes didn't leave Elara's.

"A student got hurt. A serious incident during a campus event. And Zayn was there."

The air turned cold.

Elara looked at him.

"You were involved?"

"I didn't hurt anyone," he said immediately. His voice wasn't defensive — it was strained.

"Then why did you transfer?" she asked.

That question hit harder than Naira's words.

Because it was the right one.

Zayn ran a hand through his hair, something he only did when he was thinking too fast.

"I was blamed," he said quietly. "Not officially. But enough that staying became… complicated."

"For what?" Elara's voice was steady, but her chest felt tight.

"For protecting someone."

Naira's expression shifted — not anger, not exactly.

"You took the fall," she said softly.

Zayn didn't respond.

The silence confirmed it.

Elara's mind raced.

Transfer.

Walls.

Careful behavior.

Refusing to get close.

"You think you ruin people," she whispered.

His eyes met hers.

"I think I make things worse when I try to fix them."

The vulnerability in his voice wasn't dramatic.

It was tired.

"But that's not the whole truth," Naira added carefully.

Both of them looked at her.

"There's more," she said. "And it's not over."

The words landed like a quiet threat.

"What do you mean?" Elara asked.

Naira hesitated. "The person who got hurt… they're here."

The festival music seemed distant now.

"Here?" Elara repeated.

"At Northbridge," Naira confirmed. "This semester."

Zayn closed his eyes briefly.

"And if anyone finds out the real story," Naira continued, "it won't just affect him."

Her gaze shifted to Elara.

"It'll affect you too."

The wind moved through the hanging lights, making them sway.

Under the bright celebration of the festival, something darker had just surfaced.

Elara looked at Zayn.

"This isn't just about your past, is it?"

He shook his head slowly.

"No."

And for the first time since they met—

Elara realized that the boy who watched the sky in silence

might be standing in the middle of something far more dangerous than heartbreak.

Under the university sky,

not all secrets fade with distance.

Some return.

And when they do —

they demand answers.
