Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Thirteen Heroes

[The Dwarf Kingdom in the eastern Abelion Hills was suddenly attacked by demihumans. The assault was abrupt; it was mostly four-legged beastmen and ogres.]

[Intelligence suggests those demihumans were being driven like cattle, fleeing for their lives when they crashed into the Dwarf Kingdom—a new Demon God has somehow wandered up from the south and is wreaking havoc everywhere.]

[Sigh. Should I send a relief force? Demon Gods are no easy feat to handle. The Abelion Hills are in utter chaos right now, the border is under immense pressure, and the Great Wall is still under construction. Although our nations have a treaty, sparing the manpower for a rescue mission right now... as a King, it isn't rational.]

[But... back then, the Dwarves didn't hesitate to brave danger to reinforce the Holy Kingdom. Now that it's my turn, am I supposed to shrink back because of "concerns"? I cannot betray that trust. I will go myself! Since I can't spare a large army, I'll personally lead a few thousand light cavalry. I'm over fifty anyway; I'll leave the affairs of the Holy Kingdom to little Ral.]

As Calca flipped the page, she found only the yellowed inner lining of the back cover. There was no sequel. The First Holy King had gone, never to return.

Calca fell into deep thought. She stood up and pulled a red leather-bound book from her shelf: The War History of the Abelion Hills. It was a chronicle covering nearly three hundred years of history in the region.

The book recorded that the Abelion Hills once housed a nation established by "Hill Dwarves." Unlike the Dwarves who lived deep inside mountains, they preferred carving entire mountains into semi-open-air fortresses. These Dwarves possessed elite military strength: they had domesticated large bighorn sheep as mounts and even maintained an exceptionally fierce Griffon air force.

Compared to the Empire's hippogriffs or the Holy Kingdom's use of super-sized water birds (pelicans) for aerial units, the Dwarf Griffon Riders had once been a Tier-1 military force in the surrounding regions. At its peak, the Dwarf Kingdom had a population of a million, seven thousand bighorn cavalry, and several thousand magic casters—it was a true powerhouse.

And yet, such a powerful nation had been destroyed.

[Holy Kingdom Calendar Year 28 (Approx. 188 years ago)]

[A Demon God surged from the southern desert, capable of summoning massive swarms of locusts that brought plague and death. The insect swarms summoned by the Demon God razed cities along their path, forcing the extinction of the Dwarf Kingdom.]

Calca felt a chill. A Demon God capable of bringing forth locust plagues and pestilence was a nightmare for the weak in that era. No wonder even someone as strong as the First Holy King went and never came back.

[The Demon God continued its northward march until it encountered the "Thirteen Heroes" and was annihilated. The calamity subsided, but the Abelion Hills were completely overrun and occupied by demihumans.]

"A Demon God that summons insects, wiped out by the Thirteen Heroes?" Calca curled her lip helplessly. She had likely already guessed who the person truly responsible for dealing with that Demon God was (very probably a Player holding a top-tier Guild Item).
