Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Yes, Your Highness!

Series: Overlord: I Refuse to Become the Holy Queen's Greatsword

"Come in, come in. Don't be so stiff." Calca gestured with a smile for Remedios to take a seat, reaching for the teapot to entertain her guest.

"No—no need, Your Highness! I'll do it myself!" Remedios scrambled to grab the teacup with a look of mild panic. She bluntly poured a cup of cold water into it and then set the teapot down directly in front of Calca with a heavy thud.

Calca, long accustomed to the refined etiquette of the royal court, was momentarily stunned by this total lack of social grace. She looked into Remedios's clear, earnest eyes and realized the girl wasn't mocking her—she truly just didn't know any better. To make matters more awkward, the magical teapot used to regulate water temperature hadn't even been activated yet.

Calca sighed and took the teapot back, placing it properly on its stand. As the "gurgle-gurgle" of boiling water began to rise, Remedios stared at the crystal-clear cold water in her cup. Her face instantly flushed crimson as she realized she had just made a complete fool of herself.

"Sit down; you don't have to keep standing." Calca pulled the frozen girl into a seat and got straight to the point. "Did my father send you over early?"

"Yes, Your Highness! I rushed here as soon as I received the order, though I was delayed slightly by training at the Temple." Remedios shot up and bowed frantically. "I am deeply sorry!"

Calca didn't know whether to laugh or cry as she tried to soothe her. "Father said you wouldn't arrive until Monday. Seeing you here today is a pleasant surprise. By the way, where are you staying?"

"Reporting to Your Highness: I am currently sharing a room with the maids. It is very clean, and if anything happens, I can reach your side instantly!"

Calca was genuinely surprised. The Custodio family was a Count-level house in the Royal Capital; for Remedios, a young lady of noble birth, to adapt to a servant's quarters was no small feat. What impressed Calca even more was that this eight-year-old girl had actually volunteered to live in the Spartan paladin training camps just to escape her boring academic lessons. No wonder her future strength would rank third in the neighboring regions—surpassed only by the Black Scripture and the Goblin Paladin Captain.

However, Calca quickly caught the underlying issue.

"If you've been living in the camps all this time, what about your academic studies?"

Remedios immediately began to stammer, looking exactly like a child caught cutting class. Calca understood instantly: in Remedios's eyes, the sheer terror of textbooks was far more intimidating than the rigors of a military camp.

"So, that's going to have to change," Calca said, letting out a long sigh. The hair on Remedios's neck stood on end; her instincts told her that a terrifying nightmare was about to descend.

"Remedios."

"Present!"

"As my guardian knight, you are supposed to be by my side at all times, correct?"

"That is correct, Your Highness!" Remedios puffed out her chest, her fighting spirit soaring.

"Good." Calca flashed a devilish smile. "Pack your things on Monday. You'll be joining me in the classroom for my lessons."

In an instant, Remedios felt as if the sky had come crashing down. But bound by her sense of duty, the tea-haired girl could only grit her teeth and respond with a trembling voice:

"Yes, Your Highness!"
