Later, the car pulled up right in front of Adelyn's apartment.
As Adelyn undid her seatbelt, Amelia asked, "Do you need me to come with you?"
Adelyn's hand paused, and she turned to raise a brow at her.
Seeing her like that, Amelia pressed her lips together and explained, "I'm simply offering. Since you have to return to Sanctuary Heights anyway, if you want, I can stay for a while and take you back."
Adelyn smiled and removed her seatbelt.
"Just because you believe the world has gotten kind doesn't mean you have to make me believe it too. Stay the way you have always been with me, and that would make it feel more real. Wouldn't it?"
"You—" Amelia pointed at her, infuriated. "Fine. It was my fault. I shouldn't have considered being kind to you. You … you don't deserve it."
Adelyn met her gaze without a hint of embarrassment.
And that straight face of hers only infuriated Amelia even more.
Almost going crazy, Amelia closed her eyes and curled her fingers.
