My breath caught in my throat.
My instinct short circuited and I braced my feet into the mud, squeezing my eyes shut as I awaited the impact.
Suddenly, a deafening whoosh cut through the air.
A sharp, unnatural wave of cold hit my skin, breaking out into violent goosebumps.
The ground beneath my boots vibrated with a heavy, explosive impact, followed immediately by the sickening sound of snapping bone and a dying gurgle.
The blade trembled in my arm as my chest heaved violently.
Slowly, my eyes fluttered open.
