Chapter 77 - Arrival

Valentina's POV

The dress fits the same as it did in the boutique.

I knew it would.

I checked this morning, standing in Helen's salon in the grey early light while she smoothed the wire flat against my sternum and told me I looked beautiful, which is the kind of thing Helen says when she is frightened and will not show it.

The dress fits and the wire is invisible and the thigh holster doesn't print and I look exactly like what I am supposed to look like, which is a woman arriving at a wedding on the arm of a man she loves.

I have been this woman for four months.

I can be her for a day.

The driveway is a mile long, lined with cypress trees that stand like sentinels in the dusk, black bars against a bruised purple sky.

The car slows, the gravel crunching beneath the tires a sound like bones breaking.

I check the mirror one last time. The diamonds at my throat are real, Massimo doesn't do fakes.
