Enzo Domenico had the particular quality of men who had never, in their adult lives, walked into a room without owning it.

I watched him work the pre-ceremony gathering from my position near the east entrance, the handshakes, the embraces, the way he moved through the assembled guests like a current moving through water, unhurried and inevitable.

He was in his element today in a way that went beyond the ordinary. This wasn't just a wedding he'd been invited to.

This was a room full of people who owed him something, and he moved through them with the ease of a man taking inventory of his own wealth.

Judges and politicians and men whose names appeared on incorporation documents bearing no resemblance to their actual function, all of them here, all of them present, all of them smiling in the particular way of people who understood that being invited meant something and that being seen to attend meant something more.
