Chapter 88 - Chapter 85: Promotion

In a room at Furan's house.

The steam engine had been sitting there untouched since it was last started.

Furan placed her hand on the flywheel, gently turning it a few times to feel the force required to rotate it.

Then, two Spell fluctuations began to emanate from her hand, and she placed it on the flywheel.

The two Spell fluctuations rapidly intensified, then quickly vanished, and Furan withdrew her hand.

The sound of machinery whirring filled the air as the flywheel, seemingly acted upon by an invisible force, began to spin rapidly.

However, this force seemed to be a one-time thing; before long, the flywheel's speed slowed, and it would stop after a few more rotations.

Furan watched the scene unfold, thinking, "It's finally complete."

"Let's call this Spell 'Energy Conversion.'"

Although the Spell she designed could currently only convert pressurized gas into mechanical energy and then release it, Furan, for the sake of convenience, simply gave it that name.

However, if she continued to delve into mechanical studies in the future, she would certainly add more functions to this Spell, and only then might it truly live up to its name.

Furan glanced at the steam engine, deciding to let it run freely until it stopped on its own; she had another, more important matter to attend to.

Furan went to the basement, cast a Poison Mist Spell once, then quickly canceled it to prevent herself from inhaling the poison mist in the confined space.

[You cast Poison Mist Spell once, Poison Mist Spell proficiency +3]

Then Furan silently called up her panel, eagerly looking at the attribute column.

[Attributes: Constitution 3.0, Spiritual Power 3.5]

All the conditions for promoting to Formal Mage were finally met, and now she could advance… Furan suddenly felt a thin membrane right before her eyes, as if she could pierce it with a single poke.

She did nothing at first, making no move against this membrane, and naturally, nothing happened.

She released her Spiritual Power, sending it towards this membrane. With a slight exertion of force, the membrane indented outwards a small distance.

So, promotion required her to 'confirm' it herself. She had originally thought that once the conditions were met, she would automatically be promoted.

She had even deliberately controlled the extent of her Spell practice to prevent her Spiritual Power from increasing too quickly, avoiding a direct promotion without creating a second Spell, which would mean missing out on a Specialty.

But now everything was ready. She had even specifically asked Harbos if there was anything else to note after completing the three trials, just in case she overlooked something and suffered a great loss.

Harbos simply said that once the three trials were completed, she could be promoted, and there would be no possibility of promotion failure, at least not when promoting to a First-Order Mage.

At this point, Furan wasted no more time, directly releasing her Spiritual Power with full force, piercing through this membrane.

Then Furan felt a pushing force, propelling her towards the opening where the membrane had split. She even felt her hand touch the membrane, but the pushing force quickly sent her to the other side.

Opening her eyes, Furan found herself still in her original spot; the surrounding environment seemed unchanged.

But Furan noticed her own change: she felt her Spiritual Power become exceptionally vast and powerful, more so than at any other time.

She could vaguely sense the tiny dust particles on the floor and the fine Texture on the wooden door... but of course, she still needed to check the panel for any new changes. The skill column didn't need checking; there shouldn't be anything new there.

[Name: Furan

Class: Formal Mage (Furnace Casting, Sword Chant) (One Star)... (omitted)

Attributes: Constitution 3.0, Spiritual Power 9.1

Traits: steam engine Spell Specialty (When you use Spells related to steam engines, it enhances their Energy Conversion efficiency and reduces conversion loss.)

Sword Chant Mage Specialty (When you perform Swordsmanship, it slightly increases Spell casting speed and reduces casting loss.)

... (omitted)]

First, upon seeing the class column, Furan was a bit confused as to why her Formal Mage class had suffixes, and two School names at that.

After reading the Traits, Furan understood. The 'Furnace Casting' after her Mage class likely meant she had created the Furnace Casting School's promotion method, and the panel directly labeled the School name.

This indicated that Mages promoted from different Schools, though all Mages, still had many differences, like multiple sub-branches of a single profession.

But why was the Sword Chant School labeled there? Furan hadn't promoted according to the Sword Chant School's method, and she even obtained a Specialty that seemed to belong to the Sword Chant School.

"Promotion involves the knowledge of one's School plus the School's Spell system..."

She suddenly looked up, realizing why this had happened.

She guessed that the knowledge of the Sword Chant School could be replaced by Swordsmanship, and the Spell system could be satisfied by Sword Dance.

And her Elven Swordsmanship had already reached mastery, and Sword Dance had long since been mastered, so she naturally met the promotion conditions.

"The panel identifies the promotion conditions of different Schools, and as long as I meet them, I can be considered a Mage promoted from that School?"

Regardless, this was good news, allowing her to increase her attributes by stacking different School promotion methods.

She felt that if she had only promoted through one School normally, her Spiritual Power should have been around 7, not 9.1 after stacking two Schools.

Also, she had gained two Specialties after promotion, which she had anticipated would be displayed in the trait column.

The description of the steam engine Specialty was a bit peculiar: what did "reducing conversion loss" mean? Could this Talent even improve the thermal efficiency of a steam engine?

The Sword Chant School's was easy to understand, meaning that wielding a sword gave her additional Spell bonuses.

"Wait... it seems I can also meet the promotion conditions for the Modification School!"

If she wasn't mistaken, Modification Studies could be considered the knowledge of the Modification School, and Furan had long since acquired the Modification School's Spells, but they were so bad she didn't really want to practice them.

And as long as she raised the proficiency of these Spells, she could not only gain Spiritual Power attributes through this new branch profession.

She could also obtain a unique Specialty of the Modification School.

She remembered that whether one had a Specialty was easily discernible, even when casting Spells, one could tell if you had the Specialty for that Spell.

Of course, for the Modification School, whether a processed corpse or a person she had worked on had a Specialty could also be easily seen.

Furan looked at the Body Bag next to her, muttering:

"Let's take out a section of the spine and take a look."
