I sat in the dim light of the bar and watched my brother. I knew Peter could be a mess sometimes, but I had never actually seen him cry like this. Even when we were kids, he was the type to hide his feelings. He always kept everything bottled up inside, acting like nothing in the world could hurt him. He never showed any weakness to me or our parents. He never let anyone see him break down.
But right now, he looked completely broken. There was no other word for it. His head was resting heavily on the wooden table, and his shoulders shook with every breath. Tears fell freely from his eyes, hitting the surface of the table and mixing with the spilled drinks.
For a small moment, I actually felt a sense of pity for him. It was a strange feeling. Usually, Peter just made me angry or annoyed, but seeing him like this was different. He wasn't the arrogant brother trying to steal my position anymore. He was just a man who didn't know how to handle his own pain.
