By the time I stepped into my office the next morning, I was already irritated. Corvin was gone, the elders were unsettled, the pack was watching me more closely than ever, and Jaxon… I pushed that thought aside. There were more immediate matters to handle.
I shut the door behind me and didn't bother sitting immediately.
"Kieran," I said into the quiet.
At once, the shadows along the far wall shifted and stepped out of them.
"My Alpha." He dropped to one knee without a sound.
"Let's not waste time," I said, walking past him and taking my seat. "What have you got?"
"The elders are restless," he began as he rose to his feet. "More than usual."
I gave a short, humorless laugh. "That's not exactly new."
"No," he agreed. "But this time it's… more focused because they don't trust you."
I tilted my head. "Let me guess. Because I don't listen to them?"
"That's part of it," he said carefully. "But not the whole picture."
