Chapter 34: Fate of the Godless.
~~~ [START]
"Shit… then… ask… him… out…" Gina, who was brushing her teeth from the bathroom door, said to Honey, who was cooking breakfast in the kitchen.
They had been preparing for the party all night, and now, it was nearly past 3, meaning they had slept for the majority of the day.
Honey flipped the eggs in the pan, sending them flying and breaking apart after falling back into it.
She laughed. "What are you talking about?"
Gina walked back into the bathroom, spat out the mouthwash, rinsed, and walked out.
Honey turned to her, nearly chuckling because she was only wearing a shirt and panties.
"I said, ask him out." Gina moved her hands toward her figure, placing them right above the panty lines. "I mean, it ain't like he doesn't know how you feel about him… right?"
Honey, just shook her head, grabbed two dishes from the counter, and dished out for them. She had made eggs with a side of avocado, Greek yogurt, and some nuts.
Then she pushed one dish to Gina, who, even though she was still half-dressed, grabbed a fork, made her way to the stool, and started devouring.
"I mean, did you even ask him?" Gina continued, food falling in chunks from her lips. I guess it was true what most said about beautiful women, that when they got comfortable, they embodied remnants of pigs. "Did you? He probably thinks you guys are dating."
Honey, just leaned on the counter, pulled the plate toward her, then started devouring. Her eyes then turned to the window beside them. In a couple of hours, the majority of school would be swarming in there like insects. She remembered the chaos from the previous years, and although she never enjoyed partying, it brought her an ounce of joy that this time, Troy would be in their midst.
"And all I'm waiting for is to catch that cat fucker in the act." Gina kept talking beside her, a smile lurking as she ate. "I'm telling you, he's on some bull. I literally caught him last year, and his excuse was she was a supermodel or some shit… can you believe it? I mean, you're a model and a ton prettier, why didn't he…"
Gina's words stumbled when her gaze turned back to Honey, who, for some reason, was also smiling while playing with her food.
"I'm going to do it," Honey muttered. "I'll ask him out."
{ELSEWHERE}
In the sitting room of an enormous glass house, two figures could be seen. One of them, seated on the couch, while the other stood beside her, towering over the latter's short figure like a giant.
"Alice, you're not his mother." Edward, the figure who was standing, tried to assure her. "If you were, the bond wouldn't have formed, and you were a vampire when he was born… You just look like her."
Alice, who was seated on the sofa, kept her eyes as they continually shifted glances at the different places on the floor.
"I know," Alice whispered. It seemed that the entire time, Edward was reading her mind. He didn't even bother to ask for permission nowadays; it was as though having the power to do it gave him the right to everyone's privacy.
Finally, Alice lifted her gaze to his figure. "You coming? I heard Bella will be there."
Edward hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. But after another second, the shake turned into a nod. "I don't know."
Then silence cut between them. It was weird what the house had turned into nowadays. How, instead of twice, the family would now go hunting four times a week.
"It doesn't have to be weird," Alice continued, as though hearing the speaker's voice. "I'll say you're my driver."
"But I wasn't invited."
Alice nearly broke into laughter at his words. It wasn't anyone's fault that Edward didn't get an invite; in fact, a year ago, he was the most invited out of all of them. But everything ended when he rejected Gina's personal request.
"So…" Once again, Alice persisted. "Wanna be my driver?"
Then a soft smile crept up Edward's lips. And maybe, just maybe, it was enough to answer Alice's question, or perhaps she always knew he would come.
{ELSEWHERE}
"Mr. Macon!" Troy smiled when he said it, eyes turned to his truck, which was pulling up the driveway, with its side mirror and a glimpse of the steering wheel completely fixed.
"Yeah, yeah, shut up, kid," the old man said, parked, stepped out, and moved to the pavement.
"Wait, I can give you a ride—" Troy tried to speak when he noticed the man raise his hand for a taxi.
"What?!" Mr. Macon turned. "You still think I'm old or something?!"
Troy laughed awkwardly, with a hand brushing the back of his hair.
Mr. Macon just shook his head, a smile now lingering on his lips, as a taxi pulled up on the pavement.
"And tell that fart to clean up after that party of hers," Mr. Macon said, stepping in. "And hey… hey!"
Troy turned his eyes to him. Mr. Macon's light smile had vanished, and his expression was now replaced with something resembling a touch of seriousness. "I'm not your mechanic, so stop breaking Linza."
Then he slammed the door, and the taxi drove off.
Troy just sighed behind them, turning to the truck, walking to it, and entering within.
And the moment he turned the keys, which were in the ignition, it roared.
In the past, he didn't truly understand Linza's importance. In fact, he always told himself he could do without it. But now, having gone an entire week in its absence, it finally clicked. Linza was one of the most important things to him.
And heavens knew that never again would he intend to harm it. Or at least to his knowledge. Because in the far future, like it or not, Linza would be harmed.
Fate was not a playground.
It was him. It was absolute. It was God.
