Chapter 48 - Keeping Him Safe

"So, my sword belonged to my father, and my gloves belonged to my mother," Skylar explained to Alucard while lying in bed with him, tracing her fingers over the marks she left on his chest. "And I still carry Dawn's bow with me."

"Sounds like a mess here," Alucard said, tracing Skylar's back. "Even without details, it's messy."

"Yeah," Skylar sighed, resting her chin on his chest. "I don't like to talk about the details."

"That is fair," Alucard said, then a knock came to the bedroom door. "Yes?"

"Alucard," Tara's voice came through the door. "Your sister needs help, she lost the locks of hair from both your parents. I don't know what she had them to begin with, but regardless, she needs help looking for them."

"Be right there," Alucard sighed. Then turned to Skylar in bed, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I'll be back after."

"Just make sure Dracule's not ripping her own hair out," Skylar smiled and sat up as Alucard got out of bed and got dressed.

"I'll be back," Alucard grinned before leaving. Skylar's smile faltered to a sad frown that covered her face. Skylar got up as the sun began to dip into the night. Skylar got dressed and slid her hand into her pocket. Then she pulled out two locks of hair. One black, the other blond.

"I'm sorry, Alucard," Skylar said aloud to herself. "I need to get this done, then deal with my clan. If I can keep you out of this, I will."

Skylar let out a sigh, then tucked the locks of hair back into her pocket and headed out of the room. She wouldn't tell Alucard what she planned. She wouldn't need to lie if Alucard avoided questions about her clan.

"Let's prepare for Saint Germain's bullshit scheme," Skylar sighed, heading through the house to the front door, seeing the dark world outside. The moment she set foot outside, she heard roaring.

"What the hell?" Skylar rushed to the castle, and the villagers and day creatures prepared to fight. The half-snake day creature had ushered the children and the small dog into a hidden safe compartment towards the basement. "Saint Germain!"

Skylar ran up the stairs, heading for Alucard's childhood room. She knew Saint Germain would be there if he was aiming to resurrect Dracula for his plans to control the infinite corridor.

"You son of a whore," Skylar cursed, drawing her sword as she ran. "I will kill you if you hurt him!"

Skylar bashed through the halls. Daylight nearly sparked off her body, as if her anger began to manifest in daylight coming off her body. She could feel the dark magic high above her in the castle. Death magic. She knew what was coming.

"The clan is coming!" Cindy's angry voice echoed from below. "The Maki Clan is coming!"

"Oh, for fuck's sakes, let me handle one thing at a time!" Skylar cursed upward, as if she were cursing at God itself. "You are dead, Saint Germain!"

Skylar made it to Alucard's childhood room. Saint Germain's back was to her, and she was ready to rip his head from the man's shoulders.

"You scumbag!" Skylar spat as she stepped into the room. Saint Germain turned quickly, facing her.

"Skylar--" Saint Germain tried to reason with her, but she lunged forward and struck the hilt of her sword against his chest, knocking the air from his lungs, stomping him in the stomach.

"You fucking prick!" Skylar spat, standing over him, the spell he was casting disrupted, and the body of stitched male and female limbs lay limp on the floor. "You were going to use these people! And what?! You brought my former can here?!"

"I had no part in that," Saint Germain tried to speak, spitting out blood as he lay on the floor.

"Oh, shut it! They came here only after you and the horde out there arrived!" Skylar spat, kicking him in the ribs.

"No, I promise you," Saint Germain tried again foolishly.

"Shut it!" Skylar spat as a portal opened over Alucard's childhood bed, a mangy vampire in torn-up clothes came through, then froze when he saw her, standing over Saint Germain. "Now what the fuck do you want? Need an ass beating too?"

"What — why are you here?!" the vampire said in a panic. The portal closed behind the vampire, leaving no chance of escape. Skylar scoffed and threw an orb of daylight at the vampire, burning him.

"Piss off, unless you want to be killed after I'm done fucking up his shit!" Skylar spat as the vampire huddled himself on the floor, pointing her sword at Saint Germain's chest. "Now shut up! All any of you do is aim to hurt Alucard — my Alucard! I am fucking done with you fuckers coming after him and hurting him!"

"Skylar!" Alucard's voice cut through the air as the spell Saint Germain was casting began to flicker and grow hectic. Skylar's eyes softened as she turned to the doorway and saw Alucard in the doorway of the room; concern and shock filled his eyes.

"Alucard, stay out there," Skylar nearly pleaded with Alucard not to enter the room. "I'm handling this. But there's worse coming right now."

"Skylar, what is going on?" Alucard begged; his hands began to shake. He had tears forming in his eyes. Skylar wanted to go to him, to wipe away his tears, to hold him and tell him everything would be okay. But she couldn't. Not when there was still work to be done.

"I am keeping your parents from being used as tools for Death to plunge the world into cruelty and blood," Skylar explained. "So, let me finish this."

Then two souls came from a split-thin opening of the infinite corridor, two souls came through, swirling around the room.

"You're too late," Saing Germain said, looking up at the spectacle. "They're --"

"Not going to be a part of anything," Skylar said, holding up her hand, two strands of hair spinning in her palm, Dracula and Lisa's souls swirling around Skylar. "They will not be your tools!"
