Amara's POV :
Ethan looked exactly the same as the last time I'd seen him.
The last time had been at the office three weeks after the attack. His face still had yellow bruises fading around his jaw and a cut on his eyebrow that hadn't healed right. He'd walked past my desk without looking at me and I'd known it was over.
Now he stood in front of me with a coffee cup in his hand and that same leather jacket he never took off and I didn't know what to say.
"Ethan," I managed.
"Hey." He shifted his weight. "I didn't know you came here."
"Sarah and I used to come after laser tag at Marco's." I gestured to the chair across from me. "Do you want to sit? Just for a minute?"
He looked at the chair and then at the door like he was calculating escape routes. Then he sat down and wrapped both hands around his coffee cup.
"How've you been?" I asked.
"Good. Working. Freelancing mostly." His voice was flat. Careful. "You?"
"Getting by."
