"I'm surprised," Kalawarner purred, her eyes trailing over my bleeding form. "You are just as strong as I thought, sweetheart~"
She snapped her fingers.
The light spear pinning my abdomen instantly dissolved. Without the pressure of the spear keeping the wound plugged, blood began to pour out of me at a terrifying rate.
Asia let out a panicked cry and rushed forward, her hands glowing green to try and heal me.
"Get back!" I choked out, violently shoving her away.
A split second later, another light spear hurled by Kalawarner tore through the space Asia had just occupied. It missed the nun, but it slammed directly into my right shoulder.
I couldn't hold back the scream this time. My grip on the sword failed, and I collapsed onto my side, my left hand desperately gripping the new, burning wound, trying to staunch the bleeding.
Mittelt recovered and hovered over to Kalawarner. The two Fallen Angels stood side-by-side, smiling down at us with absolute, gleeful malice.
I forced my eyes open, pulling up my status screen through the haze of pain.
HP: 80 / 450
(Status: Bleeding Out - Losing 5 HP every 5 seconds)
Mana: 200 / 400
This is bad, I thought, my breathing turning shallow and ragged. I need to heal, but my Restoration spells take time to close wounds this massive. With my HP draining this fast... I might not make it.
I watched the pool of my own blood expanding rapidly across the pavement. Kalawarner and Mittelt took a slow, victorious step forward. Asia and Isa were cowering behind me, completely defenseless. I needed a plan. I needed to attack them and heal myself at the exact same time.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw it. A brilliant, crimson magic circle materialized on the asphalt right between us and the Fallen Angels.
I let out a wet, rattling sigh of relief. Thank you, Rias Gremory. You finally showed up.
Kiba blurred out of the circle first, her broadsword drawn, and instantly lunged at Kalawarner. A second later, Koneko launched herself at Mittelt, driving the blonde Fallen Angel back with a flurry of heavy, aura-laced punches.
I slowly turned my head. Rias and Akeno stepped out of the fading circle. They immediately moved toward Isa and Asia, but when Rias's eyes landed on me—lying in a massive pool of blood with a hole in my stomach and shoulder—she froze in absolute horror.
Rias ran to me, dropping to her knees. "Shiro! Don't worry, we can help you, we can—"
I violently shoved her shoulder, pushing her out of the way.
Zzzt!
A stray light spear, deflected by Kiba, shot past Rias's face and grazed my ear, burying itself in the asphalt.
Akeno didn't hesitate; she immediately dashed forward, her hands crackling with lightning as she joined Kiba in pushing Kalawarner back.
Rias quickly shifted, gently pulling my head into her lap, trying to assess the damage. Asia scrambled to my side, tears streaming down her face, her hands glowing with her Twilight Healing as she hovered them over my abdomen.
I ignored them both. Their help was going to be too slow. I closed my eyes, tuning out the noise of the battle, and focused entirely on the remaining mana reserves in my core. I mentally pulled the trigger for [Healing].
But nothing happened. My hands didn't glow. My body was going into shock, my consciousness slowly starting to drift away.
"I... I can't close these wounds!" Asia sobbed, her green magic flickering weakly. "They're too deep! It's going to take too much time, and I'm running out of stamina!"
Desperate, Rias placed her own hands directly over the gaping hole in my chest, trying to force her demonic energy into my body to forcibly stitch the tissue together. But it simply washed over me.
"No..." Rias shook her head, her voice trembling in disbelief. "My magic isn't affecting him! His aura is rejecting it!"
Isa crawled over, joining Asia. Both girls began to weep openly over me as my breathing grew incredibly shallow, reduced to rattling gasps.
Focus, I screamed at myself in the darkness of my own mind. Push the mana!
Suddenly, a blinding, pure white light erupted from my hands.
It wasn't the golden glow of a Novice-level Restoration spell. This was denser. It flowed over my body like liquid light. My breathing instantly eased. The suffocating weight on my chest vanished.
I slowly opened my eyes.
The gaping, lethal wounds in my abdomen and shoulder were actively knitting themselves back together at an impossible speed. The torn muscle and shredded skin sealed seamlessly, leaving no trace that I had ever been impaled. The heavy, lead-like feeling in my arms disappeared. My mind snapped back to crystal clarity.
I checked my status.
HP: 300 / 450
Mana: 50 / 400
(Status: Bleeding Out - Removed)
I pushed myself up and hopped onto my feet in a single, fluid motion.
Rias, Isa, and Asia just stared at me. Their mouths were actually hanging open. Less than twenty seconds ago, I had been choking on my own blood, seconds away from a gruesome death. Now, I was standing perfectly upright, completely fine.
"How...?" Rias stammered, looking at my unblemished, blood-stained shirt. "How did you heal from fatal wounds that fast?!"
I completely ignored the question. I mentally equipped my heavy steel gauntlets and started walking straight past them, heading directly for Mittelt, who was currently locked in a fierce melee with Koneko.
Mittelt noticed my approach and let out a manic, arrogant laugh. "Well, look who finally decided to rejoin the fight! I was wondering when a real challenge would show up!"
She raised her hand and fired a light spear directly at Koneko. The little Rook didn't even flinch; she stepped into the attack and literally punched the spear in half, shattering the light into sparks.
I walked up and stopped right beside Koneko. I offered the white-haired Devil a genuine, appreciative smile.
"Thanks for keeping her busy, Koneko," I said softly.
Koneko gave me a single, stoic nod.
"After this is over, I'm buying you the biggest box of chocolates I can find as a thank you," I promised. "But for the time being... can you give me three minutes alone with this little shit? I need to teach her some manners."
Koneko didn't argue. She lowered her fists, took three steps backward, and completely yielded the floor to me.
I turned my attention back to Mittelt. I slowly clenched my hands into fists, the heavy steel gauntlets grinding together with a menacing, metallic crunch.
Mittelt scoffed, crossing her arms arrogantly. "Don't you dare think you can win against me, you lowly human!"
