Asia pulled her hands back, looking utterly heartbroken. "Why won't he allow me to heal him?"
I knelt down, resting my hand on the wolf's injured leg. [Healing Hands] flared with golden light, and the deep cut instantly knit itself back together. The wolf let out a happy huff, licking the back of my hand.
"Your magic would hurt him, Asia," I explained gently, standing back up. "He's a magical construct born from my mana. Holy energy acts like poison to him. The only way he can be healed is if I do it."
Isa finally stood up, testing her weight. She looked at her legs and shoulder in absolute amazement as the last of the burns completely vanished under Asia's lingering healing magic.
"What took you so long?" Isa asked, her voice shaking slightly as she looked over at Freed's barely breathing body on the floor.
"I didn't know exactly where you were," I said, taking a few short breaths as the adrenaline finally started to wear off. "I had to summon the wolf and use his nose to track your scent. Oh, and by the way, I literally ran the entire way here while the wolf sprinted ahead to buy time." I rubbed the back of my neck, groaning. "I really need to invest in a motorbike or something."
A low, pained groan drifted from the far wall.
Freed was mumbling something in his unconscious state. I glanced over at him, my eyes narrowing. I genuinely debated just finishing the job. Leaving him alive was a massive risk. But I knew that executing a defenseless, unconscious man right in front of Isa and Asia would instantly terrify them and likely push Asia completely away.
"It's time for us to leave," I ordered, turning back to the hallway. "Now."
We didn't waste another second. I led the way, practically running down the dark hallway with Isa and Asia right on my heels. We burst through the front door and out into the cool night air, the quiet suburban street stretching out in front of us.
"Alright, run toward the main road, I'll—!"
SHINK.
White-hot, agonizing pain exploded in my left thigh.
I screamed, my leg completely buckling underneath me. I crashed hard onto one knee on the pavement. I looked down. A glowing, humming spear of yellow light had punched cleanly through the meat of my thigh, pinning me to the concrete.
"Shiro!" Isa screamed in horror.
Both girls frantically searched the dark street for the attacker.
"Ahahaha!" A sharp, arrogant cackle echoed from the sky directly above us.
We looked up. Hovering twenty feet in the air, framed against the full moon, was a girl who looked no older than a high school student. She had bright blonde hair tied up in twin pigtails, striking blue eyes, and was wearing a frilly, gothic-lolita style dress. Protruding from her back were a pair of large, pitch-black, feathered Angel wings.
She held her hand out. Another spear of yellow light materialized in her grasp. But this time, she didn't aim at me. She pointed the tip directly at Isa.
I gritted my teeth against the blinding pain in my leg. I forced myself up, standing on my good leg, and shoved Isa roughly behind me. I threw my hand up, instantly casting [Lesser Ward] just as the Fallen Angel hurled the spear.
The light spear slammed into the golden dome, shattering on impact.
"Well, well," the Fallen Angel sneered, floating a little lower. "I'm surprised you managed to make it past Freed, you filthy Devils." Her blue eyes shifted to the trembling nun. "And Asia, what in the world are you doing playing with these things?"
"Lady Mittelt!" Asia cried out, tears welling in her eyes again. "Please! Father Freed just tried to kill my friends, and I don't want to see anyone else die! Please, can you find it in your heart to forgive them?"
I ignored the pleading and quickly pulled up the girl's stats.
Name: Mittelt
Race: Fallen Angel
Fame: Former Angel
Level: 22
HP: 275
Mana: 330
STR: 10 | END: 23 | AGI: 20 | INT: 18 | WIS: 16
Mittelt rolled her eyes, letting out an exasperated sigh. "Now, why would I do that, Asia? You are the one who is actively aligning yourself with Devils. The way I see it, you are just as much the enemy as they are."
Suddenly, the air around Mittelt began to hum. She didn't just form one spear, she manifested three, her face twisting into a cruel, sadistic smile. She immediately began her onslaught, hurling the spears down at us in rapid succession.
I gritted my teeth, pouring mana into the Ward to keep the girls safe as the heavy magical projectiles hammered against the shield, the impacts rattling my bones.
"I have a strict rule about not killing girls," I growled, glaring up at the Fallen Angel through the shimmering golden barrier. "But I think I'm going to have to make a permanent exception tonight!"
I pointed my right hand straight up at Mittelt and let the Destruction magic rip.
[Lightning Bolt]
The jagged streak of electricity tore through the air, colliding dead center with one of her light spears. The opposing magics violently canceled each other out, the spear dissolving into harmless sparks. Before she could react, I fired a second [Lightning Bolt] with my left hand.
The spell struck true. It clipped Mittelt's right wing, singing the black feathers. She screamed, the shock causing her flight pattern to falter. She was forced to drop out of the sky, landing heavily on the pavement twenty feet away.
She was still standing, her face twisted in rage, and immediately reached back to pull another light spear. I primed a third bolt in my hand, ready to blast her the second her guard dropped.
SHNK.
A sudden, agonizing impact hit my lower back, driving the air from my lungs. The force of it pitched me forward. I barely managed to keep my balance, slamming the tip of my Dwarven Sword into the concrete to keep from face-planting.
I looked down. Protruding from my lower abdomen, entirely coated in my own blood, was the jagged, glowing tip of a light spear. It had gone completely through me.
I choked, coughing up a thick spatter of blood onto the pavement. My knees buckled, and I collapsed onto the concrete, my hands gripping the hilt of the sword with white knuckles. It was the only thing holding me up.
Thanks to [Gamer's Body], the system muted the pain. I couldn't feel the full brunt of my organs being pierced. I only felt about 50% of it. But even then, the pain was excruciating, a hot, searing agony that made my vision blur. It genuinely amazed me that I was still conscious.
I painfully turned my head to look over my shoulder.
Stepping out of the shadows behind us, licking her lips with a dark, sadistic smile, was Kalawarner.
"I'm surprised," Kalawarner purred, her eyes trailing over my bleeding form. "You are just as strong as I thought, sweetheart~"
