Mittelt scoffed, crossing her arms arrogantly. "Don't you dare think you can win against me, you lowly human!"
Mittelt shrieked in rage, pulling her arm back to hurl another spear of holy light directly at my chest.
She never got the chance to throw it.
With my Agility at 43, I didn't just dodge; I launched myself off the pavement. The spear sheared harmlessly through the empty air where I had been a split second before. I closed the distance in a single bound, twisting my hips mid-air, and drove my heavy steel gauntlet squarely into her jaw.
CRACK.
The impact lifted her completely off her feet. She sailed backward and slammed into the street, the concrete cratering beneath her.
She groaned, instinctively trying to push herself up, her hands glowing as she desperately tried to manifest another weapon. But I didn't give her an inch to breathe. Gravity brought me back down, and I planted both of my heavy boots directly into her stomach.
Mittelt's eyes bulged, a violent spray of saliva and air erupting from her mouth. Before she could even gasp for breath, I dropped to one knee and delivered three brutal, methodical punches to her face and ribs. By the time I stopped, the arrogant Fallen Angel was completely dazed, her eyes rolling back in her head, barely functioning.
I grabbed her roughly by the collar of her gothic dress, spun on my heel, and hurled her like a shotput toward Kalawarner.
Kalawarner was currently in the air, desperately banking away from a barrage of Kiba's sword strikes and Akeno's lightning. She had just managed to dodge a lethal bolt of yellow electricity when a hundred pounds of unconscious Fallen Angel slammed directly into her.
Both women tangled together mid-air and crashed violently into the brick wall of a nearby alley.
Kalawarner groaned, shoving Mittelt's limp body off of her. She coughed, wiping dust from her face, and looked up. When her eyes locked onto mine, she actually smiled.
"I must admit, Shiro," Kalawarner panted, a dark, seductive amusement returning to her voice. "If I had known you were this strong... I would have asked you to join our cause properly. Tell me... do you still want to?"
The chaotic street went dead silent. Rias, Akeno, and Kiba all paused, their eyes darting toward me, waiting to see how the wild card would answer.
I didn't give them an answer.
I vanished from my spot, crossing the street in a blur. Before Kalawarner could even blink, I was standing right over her. I grabbed her by the arm, hauled her off the ground, and violently hurled her back toward the center of the street.
She skidded across the asphalt, coming to a halt directly at Rias's feet. Kalawarner gritted her teeth and tried to push herself up, but Koneko stepped forward. The little Rook casually planted her heel into the Fallen Angel's back, pinning her flat against the ground and making it look like she was bowing before the Gremory King.
I walked over, coming to a stop next to Rias.
"Kalawarner," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "If we had met in another life... one where we didn't have to kill each other... I would have liked to get to know you."
I crouched down, meeting her hateful glare. "It was an incredible first date. You're an incredible woman. But this was a trap from the start. You wanted me to find Isa and Asia so the three of you could corner me, and then pick us off one at a time."
I stood up, turning my back on her entirely.
I walked over to where Asia and Isabella were huddled near the sidewalk. They were covered in dirt, bruised, and exhausted. I fully expected them to look at me with terror, I had just beaten two women half to death with my bare hands.
Instead, the moment I got close, both girls lunged forward. They wrapped their arms around me, burying their faces in my chest in a tight, desperate hug.
I froze, my hands hovering awkwardly in the air. "You're... you're still hugging me? After everything I just did?"
They both nodded frantically against my jacket.
"You saved us," Asia said softly, her voice thick with tears. She stepped back and gave me a deep, reverent bow. "You took all that pain, and you pushed us away so we wouldn't get hurt while you dealt with all this madness. Thank you."
Isa wiped her eyes, giving me a watery smile. "Thank you for saving us from Freed, Shiro. If you didn't arrive, I would, " She choked on the words, unable to finish the sentence. That psychotic exorcist was a real piece of work, and considering how much he enjoyed torturing her, he deserved exactly what he got.
I let out a soft sigh, wrapping my arms around both of them for a brief, reassuring hug.
"I will kill you both!" Kalawarner shrieked from the ground, thrashing wildly under Koneko's boot. "I will kill you, Shiro! I'll show you that you joined the wrong side, !"
KRAK-BOOM.
A blinding pillar of demonic lightning descended from the sky.
I looked over. Akeno lowered her hand, a serene, chilling smile on her lips. Where Kalawarner had been pinned just a second ago, absolutely nothing remained except a smoldering pile of black feathers littering the asphalt. I glanced back toward the brick wall. Mittelt was gone, too, her body having dissolved into a similar cloud of feathers that was slowly vanishing into the night wind.
I smiled faintly. Well, at least that solves one problem for now.
I turned back to the girls. Isa was quietly introducing Asia to the rest of the peerage. Rias, however, walked straight over to me, her cyan eyes scanning me up and down.
"So," Rias said, gesturing elegantly toward my heavy steel gauntlets and the strange, mystical aura clinging to my clothes. "Do you often dress up like this, or is tonight a special occasion?"
I just rolled my eyes, looking away. I wasn't about to answer that question, even though for my current power level, this was the best equipment I had on hand.
"I like it," Akeno chimed in, stepping up beside Rias and giving me a sultry wink. "It gives him a dangerously rugged look~"
I gave Akeno a polite nod, silently thanking her for the compliment.
A moment later, Koneko walked over. She stopped a few feet away from me and executed a stiff, perfect bow.
"I would like to apologize for how I acted toward you earlier today," Koneko said. Her face was completely deadpan, her voice entirely monotone. It was so robotic I found it hard to believe it was happening. I glanced over at Rias, who was wearing a very pleased, authoritative smile, and it suddenly clicked. Rias had ordered her to do this.
"It's fine, Koneko," I sighed, scratching the back of my head. "I was asking for trouble when I let my familiar pick up your cat like that."
I glanced over at the spectral wolf. It was currently sitting rigidly next to Asia, acting like an overgrown service animal, refusing to leave the nun's side. Now... what am I supposed to do with Asia?
Rias cleared her throat, shifting back to business.
"So, should I ask why a cadre of Fallen Angels was actively attacking my peerage... Isa?" Rias asked, turning her sharp gaze onto her Pawn.
Isa flinched and immediately looked down at her shoes, remaining completely silent.
Rias sighed, realizing she wasn't going to get an answer there, and turned back to me. "I would also like to know who this nun is, and exactly how you knew they were in trouble tonight, Shiro."
I let out a heavy breath while Rias stared me dead in the eyes. I couldn't exactly tell her about my system, so I went with the backup plan.
"The reason I knew they were going to attack Isa and Asia is because I got a message from my former girlfriend," I said flatly.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket, opened the cryptic, threatening text Kalawarner had sent me an hour ago, and handed it to Rias. It had no real defining features, but the text explicitly stated that the brunette and the nun wouldn't survive the night.
"From there," I lied smoothly, "I just used my wolf's nose to track them down before it was too late."
Rias read the message, her eyes narrowing as she pondered the implications. She handed the phone back to me and nodded gracefully.
"Very well. I am very much thankful that you looked after Isa," Rias said. She placed both hands over her chest and offered a deep, formal bow. "If I had known that Fallen Angels were operating this aggressively, I would have arrived sooner."
She then turned and bowed to Isa, apologizing for putting her in such immediate danger on her first solo contract. Isa frantically waved her hands, insisting it wasn't a big deal and that she was just glad to be alive.
While they talked, I quietly slipped away from the group.
I walked over to Asia. The blonde nun was standing a few feet away, her hands clasped tightly in front of her chest. She was staring blankly at the dark asphalt where the black feathers of her former comrades had disappeared.
"Hey," I said softly, stepping into her line of sight. "How are you doing?"
