Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Bone Lich

A young man screamed as a spear punched through his abdomen and pinned him to the ground. Another tried to flee and was cut down from behind, his body collapsing only to twitch as bone began knitting through his skin again. Panic rippled through the humans, spells firing wildly, blades swinging too fast, too sloppy. Jenn backed away instinctively, hands already glowing with healing light as she dragged a wounded girl behind a toppled statue.

Blood soaked into the stone beneath her knees. Every direction she looked, someone was dying. There was no rhythm, no flow, just bodies falling faster than she could save them. Then Calvin stepped forward. He did not shout. He did not hesitate. He simply moved and his broad sword came down in a brutal arc, cleaving straight through a shield and the creature behind it, bone and armor splitting apart as if made of rotten wood. He followed with a shield bash that crushed another Legionnaire's skull inward, the force sending fragments spraying across the courtyard.

He advanced into them, red liquid streaking across his armor, his movements clean, economical, practiced in a way that made Jenn's stomach turn. He was different now. Not just stronger but his instincts were sharper too. Calvin fought like someone who had learned exactly what the System wanted from him.

Each kill made him faster. Jenn could see it, feel it in the way his strikes chained together, how momentum carried him forward instead of slowing him down. Bloodshed fed him and violence sharpened him. The System rewarded aggression immediately, invisibly, and Calvin drank it in without question. "Rotate left," he barked suddenly. The survivors closest to him obeyed without thinking, stumbling back just as a shield wall slammed into where they had been standing. Another group hesitated, confused, and the Legion carved through them in seconds. "Hold the line there," Calvin shouted, pointing to a narrow gap between two ruined buildings.

Three students rushed to it, panic written across their faces. Jenn felt her breath catch. They were too weak and slow. They died buying time for others. The Legion pressed into the choke point, slowed just enough for Calvin to pivot, crash into their flank, and tear the formation apart. The survivors behind him lived because those three did not. He kept shouting orders as he fought, directing movement, pulling people back, throwing others forward. There was no discussion, no explanation. Only command and consequence. Those who listened survived longer. Those who froze were trampled, impaled, or dragged screaming into the mass of bone and shadow. Jenn kept healing, hands shaking, tears blurring her vision. She saved who she could, watched who she couldn't die anyway, and slowly, sickeningly, she began to understand the pattern. Calvin was not trying to save everyone. He was choosing who mattered and who deserved to survive. Seconds were currency here and lives were payment. He spent them without hesitation, without remorse, because the math worked. As the Legion surged again and Calvin roared a command that sent another group to their deaths, Jenn felt something inside her crack. The ground split open with a sound like stone screaming.

Cracks spiderwebbed through the courtyard, running beneath bodies and shattered shields, tearing through old concrete and blood-slick earth. The Gravebound Legion faltered for the first time, not retreating, but pausing, shields locking tighter as something else pushed up from below. Jenn felt it before she saw it.

A pressure in her chest and a cold weight that made her hands tremble mid-heal. The ground erupted and a massive skeletal figure rose from the fractured earth, built from the remains of fallen students, fused together by dark mana that pulsed like a second heart. A crown of skulls sat atop its head, jawbones wired shut, eye sockets burning with a hollow violet glow. Bone plates slid into place around its torso as if answering a silent command, ribs thickening, limbs reinforcing themselves. A Bone Lich. Dark mana poured from it in waves, the air itself bending as spines of sharpened bone tore free from the ground around it, assembling into jagged constructs that hovered at its sides like loyal hounds. Someone screamed but Calvin didn't.

He took one look at it and understood. "That's the boss." He said, voice steady, loud enough to cut through the chaos. Then he raised his sword and roared, "Cut me a path!" No one questioned him. They moved because the alternative was dying where they stood. Students surged forward, throwing spells, swinging blades, screaming as bone spikes erupted from the ground beneath them. One was impaled instantly, lifted screaming into the air before going silent.

Another was shredded by a sweep of dark magic that peeled flesh from bone in a heartbeat. A third was crushed as a construct slammed down on him like a falling wall. Three lives burned away to buy seconds. Seconds Calvin used to take a chance. Jenn screamed internally as she ran, healing light snapping between wounded bodies, hands slick with blood. She wanted to stop it and scream at him. To tell him there had to be another way. But there wasn't. Calvin hit the Bone Lich like a siege weapon. The lich raised an arm and launched a spear of condensed bone straight at his chest.

Calvin brought his shield up in time, the impact driving him backward, skidding across the ground as cracks raced outward beneath his boots.

Dark magic detonated against him, flinging him into a shattered pillar hard enough to splinter stone. He got up as blood ran freely now, streaking down his armor, dripping from his chin. His breathing was ragged, his shield cracked, but his eyes were alight with something feral and ecstatic. The Bone Lich raised both arms as dark mana condensed. Jenn felt it coming, a killing spell that would erase everything in its path. Calvin didn't dodge.

He grabbed the nearest student, a young man barely holding a sword, eyes wide with terror, and pulled him in front of himself. The spell hit. And the student died instantly, body disintegrating into fragments of bone and shadow that scattered across the courtyard. Calvin stepped through the fading magic. The Bone Lich tried to retreat, bone constructs surging forward to intercept, but Calvin was already there. His sword came down in a brutal overhand strike, splitting through the first construct and into the lich's shoulder. Bone shattered and its dark mana screamed. The lich countered, slamming a skeletal fist into Calvin's side, launching him across the ground again. He rolled, came up on one knee, and laughed, a raw, broken sound.

"Is that it?" he snarled. He charged. The broad sword rose high, both hands on the hilt, every ounce of his weight and rage behind the blow. The blade came down straight through the Bone Lich's crown, cleaving skulls apart, splitting the fused bodies down the center. The lich screamed as dark energy detonated outward, ripping through the courtyard in a shockwave that knocked survivors off their feet. Then it collapsed. The violet glow guttered out. The constructs froze mid-motion and crumbled into inert piles of bone. The Gravebound Legion shuddered, then fell apart where they stood, armor clattering uselessly to the ground. Silence crept back in, slow and heavy.

Jenn pushed herself up from the ground, ears ringing, heart hammering. Everywhere she looked there were bodies. Too many to count. Blood pooled in the cracks of the courtyard, soaking into stone that would never be clean again. She counted the living. Twenty-five survived this gauntlet of death. Calvin stood at the center of it all, chest heaving, armor drenched in red, broad sword hanging loosely at his side. Slowly, deliberately, he lifted the blade overhead and roared, a sound of pure, unrestrained battle lust that echoed off the ruined buildings.

The survivors stared at him. Some with awe, others with terror and the rest with gratitude they didn't know how to feel. They had won the wave. And in doing so, Calvin had become something none of them could stop.
