The courtyard looked like something that should not exist on a university campus. Bodies lay everywhere, some whole, some not, bone armor cracked open like shattered shells. Shields were split down the middle, spears snapped, chunks of fused bone and shadow scattered across stone that was slick with drying red. The air smelled wrong, iron and ash and something older, like a grave disturbed too many times.
Jenn stood among the survivors with her staff clenched in both hands, her knuckles white. Her legs trembled now that the fighting had stopped, the adrenaline draining out of her in sickening waves. Around her, people cried softly, stared into nothing, or simply sat where they had fallen, too tired to move. They were alive. That was the only thing that mattered, the only thing anyone could think about. Calvin stood at the center of it all. He hadn't collapsed. He hadn't leaned on his sword or sunk to his knees like the others.
He stood upright, broad sword resting against the ground, shield hanging loosely at his side, chest rising slow and steady. Blood coated him, streaked across his armor, his arms, his face. He looked carved out of the aftermath rather than shaken by it. Jenn noticed something that made her stomach tighten. Everyone was looking at him. Not just glancing, not just checking if he was still standing, but watching him, waiting. Their eyes followed him instinctively, the way people look to a lighthouse in a storm. She saw it ripple outward through the crowd, fear turning into relief, relief turning into something dangerously close to admiration.
A soft chiming sound flickered through the air. Calvin's eyes unfocused for a moment as translucent screens reflected across his pupils. System notifications. Plural and they kept coming, one after another, too fast for Jenn to read from where she stood. No one else even looked up, perhaps too busy with their own notifications.
Calvin inhaled slowly, then exhaled, a satisfied sound escaping his throat. Jenn felt it then, the shift. His presence seemed heavier, like the space around him had grown denser. Standing near him felt different than it had before, like being too close to a generator humming at full power. He rolled his shoulders once, muscles flexing beneath his armor. The movement pulled his helmet slightly back and Jenn froze. At first she thought it was blood, some dark smear caught in his hairline. Then it moved. Or rather, it didn't move, but the light caught it differently. A small, curved protrusion pushed through his skin near the temple, barely an inch long, the color darker than bone, polished and wrong. A horn… What the fuck is that? Is he becoming a demon? She thought. Her breath caught in her throat.
Calvin noticed her staring. Their eyes met across the courtyard. For a split second, something sharp and knowing flickered across his expression. Not surprise or fear but amusement. He reached up casually and pulled his helmet back into place, hiding the horn from view. The gesture was calm, unhurried, as if he were tucking away a loose strand of hair rather than concealing something monstrous. Then he smiled.
"All right," Calvin said, his voice carrying easily through the space. "Let's get everyone patched up." He didn't ask it was a command. He walked through the survivors, clapping shoulders, offering words of praise. "Good hold." "You didn't break." "You followed orders." His tone was warm, almost gentle, but Jenn felt her skin crawl as she listened. There was something rehearsed about it, something hollow beneath the encouragement, like a predator soothing prey before the kill.
"Potions," Calvin said at one point, not raising his voice. "If you've got any, bring them here. I need to stay combat ready." People moved instantly. Hands dipped into packs, bottles were passed forward without hesitation. No one argued. No one asked why he should get them all. Gratitude and fear blurred together until they were the same thing. Jenn watched, heart pounding. He wasn't asking for loyalty. He was assuming it.
This was leadership forged in blood and terror, and the System loved him for it. She could feel that truth settling into place with sickening clarity. As Calvin laughed with a survivor and clapped him on the back, Jenn's mind flashed to another image.
A girl with bright eyes and an easy smile. Stephanie, laughing during the early waves, teasing Calvin for being too serious, saying they'd survive together. Stephanie's blood on stone. Calvin's blade coming down without hesitation. Jenn's chest tightened until it hurt to breathe. She understood it now, Calvin wasn't pretending anymore. And worse than that, the System wasn't punishing him for it. It was rewarding exactly what he was becoming. Calvin moved again before anyone had time to breathe. He stopped near the edge of the courtyard where a young couple stood close together, hands clasped too tightly. The girl's face was streaked with grime and dried tears, her shoulders hunched as if she expected another blow from the world at any moment.
The man beside her looked worse, eyes sunken, posture slumped, exhaustion written into every line of his body. Calvin smiled at them. Not the grin he wore in battle, feral and blood-soaked, but something softer. Approachable. Almost kind. "You did good out there," he said to the girl, his voice low, reassuring. "Real good. Not everyone can keep it together like that." She nodded automatically, eyes flicking to the sword at his side, then back to his face.
Calvin leaned closer, just enough to invade her space. "You sticking with him?" he asked lightly, gesturing at the boyfriend with a tilt of his head. "Because if you want to get stronger, really survive what's coming, I can help with that." The boyfriend stiffened but didn't speak. The girl swallowed. "I… I don't know." Calvin chuckled. "Come on. I'm just talking. You don't want to fall behind, do you? Wouldn't want your man here getting killed in the melee." He shifted, planting his hand against the wall beside her head. Stone cracked. Not shattered, not exploded, but split cleanly beneath his palm, fractures spiderwebbing outward as if the building itself had flinched.
The sound echoed across the courtyard, sharp and final. The boyfriend froze. Jenn watched his face go blank, fear wiping away whatever resolve he might have had left. His eyes dropped to the ground. Slowly, deliberately, he took a step back. Then another. He didn't look at the girl as he turned away. "Wait," she said, panic rising in her voice. "What are you doing?" He didn't answer. Calvin leaned closer, his shadow swallowing her.
His eyes glowed faintly now, just a hint, but Jenn felt it even from across the courtyard. Pressure. Intent. "See?" Calvin said softly. "You'll be better off. A real man can protect you, unlike that weakling." He says with a smirk. "I don't want to go with you," the girl said, voice shaking. "We're engaged. I don't want to leave him." Silence answered her. No one stepped forward or dared to speak. Jenn felt something inside her snap. "No!" she screamed, the word tearing out of her chest. "Don't you see what he is?" Heads turned toward her, faces pale, eyes wide.
"He killed Stephanie," Jenn shouted, her voice breaking. "He cut her down like she was nothing. His own fucking girlfriend! She was my best friend since we were five and fucking killed her! He's been killing players for experience. Farming people. He's not a hero, he's a Marauder. That's how he levels!" The words hung in the air like smoke but no one moved. No one defended her. Some looked away. Others stared at Calvin, waiting. Calvin turned slowly. The warmth drained from his expression, leaving something cold and sharp beneath.
His gaze locked onto Jenn, and the weight of it slammed into her like a physical force. Her knees buckled as killing intent washed over her, crushing, suffocating. "So," Calvin said quietly. "You decided to talk." He moved and Jenn barely had time to raise her staff before he was on her. Steel flashed in an instant and overwhelming pain exploded. Her staff clattered to the ground as her arm fell away, severed cleanly, blood spraying across the stone. She screamed but it was cut short as Calvin drove his sword through her torso, impaling her with brutal precision. The impact knocked the air from her lungs, sent her vision blurring at the edges. He leaned close, his voice low enough that only she could hear. "I told you to behave." Calvin kicked her off the blade. Jenn hit the ground hard, the world spinning, sound dull and distant. She watched through fading vision as Calvin grabbed the girl by the wrist and dragged her away.
"No one help her." he said loudly, not looking back. "Or you're next." No one moved. Jenn lay there, blood pooling beneath her, the sky above her narrowing to a tunnel of gray. She felt strangely calm as the fear ebbed away, replaced by clarity. She had never been safe. The hero had always been the threat. A translucent screen flickered into existence above her, visible to her alone.

Jenn's vision darkened as the courtyard faded away, leaving only the glow of the System watching, waiting. She never saw herself choose.
