Cherreads

Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Blood and Silence

The hallway feels wrong. Not just ruined, not just burned out and stripped of power, but hollow, as if something essential has already been taken from it. Smoke clings low to the floor, thick enough to sting her eyes, and the coppery tang of blood coats the back of Jenn's throat every time she breathes too deeply. The emergency lights are dead. The alarms that once screamed nonstop have gone quiet. No sirens or announcements. Only distant echoes of violence, muffled and indistinct, bleeding through the concrete like the heartbeat of something enormous. Calvin moves ahead of her without hesitation. He doesn't hurry, doesn't slow, his stride even and untroubled as his boots crunch over shattered glass and abandoned backpacks.

His sword hangs loose in one hand, his shield balanced comfortably against his forearm, posture relaxed in a way that makes Jenn's skin crawl. He should be limping. She watched him burn earlier, watched him bleed, watched his armor crack under pressure that should have broken anyone else but she had to heal him. If she didn't then she would be his next victim. They round a corner, and Jenn nearly collides with him when he stops. The student is crumpled between two overturned desks, one leg bent at an angle that makes her stomach lurch. Blood soaks through his jeans and spreads beneath him in a dark, uneven pool. His face is pale, lips tinged blue, eyes unfocused with shock, but when he looks up and sees Calvin, something stirs there. Recognition. Relief.

"You're… you're the shield guy," the student croaks, voice shredded raw. "The one from earlier. You saved people." Calvin crouches slowly, bringing himself level with the boy, expression unreadable. For a heartbeat, Jenn lets herself hope. It's stupid, she knows that, but hope is hard to kill when it's already starving. "What's your name?" Calvin asks. "Marcus," the student says quickly, words tumbling over each other. "Marcus Hill. I can fight. I swear. Wind magic. I just need help getting up. Please, I don't want to die here."

Calvin nods once, listening, patient as a priest at confession. Then he drives his sword through Marcus's throat. The motion is precise, economical, the blade sliding in and out so cleanly it takes a second for the reality of it to register. Blood sprays once, hot and sudden, flecking Calvin's armor and Jenn's sleeve before Marcus collapses forward, hands clawing weakly at nothing. His eyes stay open as he falls, fixed on Calvin, shock frozen there until the light drains out of them. Jenn's scream catches in her chest, strangled before it can fully escape. Calvin rises smoothly, wiping his blade against Marcus's jacket with the same detached care someone might use to clean mud from their boots. He doesn't look at her. He doesn't need to.

A faint glow flickers across his eyes for less than a second. A System notification. Likely XP being given out like a damned prize for murder. Jenn doesn't see the words, but she knows what they are. She's seen that look before. Her hands shake at the realization that Calvin is was farming XP from her classmates. The ground shudders beneath their feet, a deep vibration that rattles loose dust from the ceiling and sends a tremor through Jenn's bones.

It isn't an explosion or magic. It feels structural, like the campus itself has been struck by something massive, something waking up. Then the voice comes. It doesn't echo. It doesn't boom. It speaks directly into her mind, cold and absolute, each syllable carrying weight.

WAVE 6 INITIATED

[GET BACK TO WORK!]

The words press down on her chest, stealing the air from her lungs. This feels different from the others. Heavier somehow and maybe even final. Calvin turns toward the nearest shattered window. Jenn follows his gaze, dread pooling low in her gut. At the edge of the forest, shapes emerge. They don't rush or scatter but slowly march in unison. Humanoid figures step out from between the trees in perfect formation, bone fused to armor in grotesque symmetry, plates grown directly from skeletal frames and reinforced with dark seams that pulse faintly with unnatural energy.

Shields lock together at the front, jagged and pale, forming a wall that advances with mechanical certainty. Behind them, spears and cleavers rise and fall in unison, silent and precise. No howls, screams or emotions came from the monsters. Jenn's knees threaten to give out. A group of over zealous students charged the Legion near the science quad. They die almost immediately. Spells burst uselessly against the shield wall, magic dispersing like rain against stone. One fighter charges and is impaled so hard his body lifts off the ground before slumping bonelessly to the pavement.

Another turns to run and is cut down from behind, legs severed in a single brutal sweep. Jenn watches, frozen, as the fallen begin to move again. Bones twist and armor knits itself together from blood and shadow. The dead students rise silently, stepping into formation without hesitation. Screams cut off mid-breath as the Legion advances. This isn't a battle but a fucking extermination. "This isn't survivable." Jenn whispers, tears blurring her vision.

Calvin doesn't respond except to step forward instead, stopping just short of the open courtyard. He plants his feet and watches the Legion's pace, eyes narrowing as he measures distance, timing, angles, the way their formation flexes without breaking. He isn't afraid or even angry he is focused on the horde like he's calculating something. Jenn realizes, with a sinking certainty, that Calvin has already accepted what this wave is meant to be.

Out in the courtyard more survivors die as ahead of them, the Legion closes in. Calvin tightens his grip on his sword. Calvin isn't afraid of the Legion but he's waiting. Panic spreads faster than the Legion. It ripples through the survivors in jagged waves, people shouting over one another, spells misfiring, bodies colliding as they scramble without direction. Fear strips away whatever discipline the System had tried to teach them. They aren't players anymore. They're prey. Calvin steps forward into the chaos. He doesn't raise his weapon. He doesn't shout at first. He simply stands where everyone can see him, shoulders squared, blood drying dark along his armor, eyes sharp with intent. When he activates the skill, Jenn feels it before she hears it, a pressure in her ears, a vibration that rattles her teeth. His voice booms across the campus, unnaturally loud, unnaturally clear, cutting through screams and clashing steel alike. "Everyone who wants to live," Calvin commands, "get to the courtyard. Now." The words don't sound like a plea, it's more a forgone conclusion. Some people hesitate.

A handful break away from the flow, choosing flight over obedience, sprinting down side paths with wild hope burning in their eyes. Jenn watches them run and moments later the Legion reach them. The shield wall parts with mechanical precision. Spears thrust. Cleavers rise and fall. The group disappears beneath bone and steel in seconds, their deaths efficient and soundless. No one questions Calvin after that.

They flood the courtyard in a ragged stream, survivors dragging injuries, clutching broken weapons, sobbing openly as they collapse into whatever space they can find. Blood slicks the stone. Smoke hangs low. The air smells like iron and fear. Calvin moves among them like a general inspecting troops. "You." he points, "Front line. Shields up." Casters behind them. Tight formation." Injured, center. If you can't fight, you run supplies or you stay down." There's no discussion. No debate. People move because the alternative is worse. One man, tall and shaking with adrenaline, shoves back. "You don't get to tell us what to do!" he snarls.

"You're not in charge." Calvin turns calmly with a soft smile. The punch is fast and brutal, slamming into the man's jaw with enough force to drop him instantly. Calvin follows him down, driving a knee into his chest, then planting a boot on his throat. He leans down just enough for everyone to see his expression. He doesn't kill him but lets him breathe. Calvin steps back, leaving the man coughing and broken on the stone. "Anyone else?" he asks. Silence answers him as the Legion reaches the courtyard moments later.

The clash is thunderous as shields meet shields, bone scraping against steel as the formation crashes into Calvin's hastily assembled line. He barks orders constantly, rotating fighters out the moment their stamina falters, pushing fresh bodies forward without apology. When the line bends, he orders retreats without warning, abandoning flanks, sacrificing slower survivors to buy seconds of breathing room.

Jenn watches a girl trip and fall, reaching out for help, only to be dragged screaming into the press because Calvin doesn't turn back. It works… Barely. Fire scorches bone and wind blasts stagger formations. Blood pools in gutters. Survivors die screaming, die silent, die screaming again as the Legion claims them and adds their bodies to its ranks. Through it all, Calvin never stops moving. Never stops commanding and never hesitates. Jenn hates him for it. She hates the way her heart races every time she hears his voice, hates the way she moves when he points without even thinking. She hates the certainty settling in her chest, the awful understanding that without him, every person here would already be dead.
