Cherreads

Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Captured

The mechanical screech of the cable line sliding off the front axle died out, leaving only the low, simulated hum of the transport vehicle's insulated engine. Through the thick, armored viewports, the wall of brassy dust kicked up by the Area A convoy began to settle over the hood of their vehicle like fine volcanic ash.

Kaelen's hand slowly released the internal window frame. His fingers were stiff, the cold static from his ribs pulsing in short, rhythmic waves that made his peripheral vision twitch. He did not look at SC, but his gray eyes remained fixed on the tactical screen where the two unmapped military transports were disappearing into the black pillar line of the Giant Tree Forest.

"They are running full combat protocols," SC murmured, his green eyes reflecting the fading digital pathing icons. "No identification markers on the transponders. No leakage from the fuel cells. Marshal Valerius isn't just expanding his security loop; he's sealing the sector."

"He is establishing a kill zone," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into a hard, mechanical cadence. "Tiran. Kill the main thrusters. We drop the frame here."

Tiran didn't hesitate. His large hands moved across the manual override panel, cutting the secondary power feeds until the heavy armored truck settled into the dark, metallic sand with a dead, hydraulic sigh.

"The sensor loop ahead is active. If we push this mass past the first line of iron wood roots, the acoustic vibration will hit the Area A rear radar within ninety seconds."

"Then we carry the balance on foot," Jaren said, his voice tightening beneath his mask as he checked the battery seals on his compact laser pistol. He looked toward Kaelen's side, where the dark, branching veins of the curse were beginning to trace a cold pattern up toward his collarbone. "The canopy is thick enough to mask our thermal signatures from orbital sweeps, but if the radiation from that wound spikes, the automated scout drones will find us before we clear the ridge."

Shuang stepped out from the front passenger seat, her leather cloak flaring as she pulled two heavy, insulated containment packs from the floor lockers. She passed one to SC and slung the other across her right shoulder, her fox like eyes fixed on the forest boundary.

"The medical packs contain localized lead lining. They will suppress the curse's thermal radiation for twelve hours, but they won't stop the internal necrosis. If you use your tactical alignment to sprint, General, the surge will override the insulation."

Kaelen caught the pack with his left hand, his short sentences cutting through the rising wind. "The necrosis is a secondary calculation. Let's move under the needles."

The squad dropped from the rear flatbed in a disciplined, single file column, leaving the vehicle hidden behind a cluster of jagged slag ridges. The moment Kaelen's boots crossed the perimeter fence line, the light from the leaden sky vanished completely.

The Giant Tree Forest didn't follow the logic of organic growth. The iron wood trees were monolithic pillars of pure, obsidian black timber, their trunks cold to the touch and slick with an unrefined oil that smelled of wet rust and crushed ozone. Overhead, the canopy was a dense, interlocking vault of sharp, metallic needle leaves that clicked against each other in the wind with the sound of a million razor blades sliding over zinc. The ground was black, covered in a thick layer of iron needles that crunched like broken glass beneath their weight.

"The frequency wire is dead on this side," SC reported, his fingers tracing a severed fiber line running along the base of an obsidian root. "The Area A convoy didn't just pass through; they cut the local security nodes to prevent the Southern Alliance from monitoring their insertion vector."

"It means Moran is tracking them blindly," Jaren noted, his eyes scanning the dark, narrow alleys between the trunks. "And if they're blind, they'll clear every biological signature they find on the path just to be thorough."

"Listen," Kaelen commanded, his hand snapping up to signal an immediate halt.

The constant clicking of the needle leaves had shifted. The rhythmic, mechanical sound of the wind through the canopy was being broken by a heavy, uneven wet scraping sound from the dark ravine below the ridge. It was the sound of heavy scales dragging over iron needles, accompanied by a low, subaudible vibration that made the static in Kaelen's side spike with sudden, agonizing intensity.

"Titan Star Serpents," SC whispered, his data screen flashing a sudden swarm of gray thermal signatures. "But the registry said they were lone hunters. There are four... no, six signatures moving up from the basin."

"The water source," Jaren realized, his jaw tightening as he backed toward Tiran's bulk. "The grayed out mission boards. The Foundry's waste lines have poisoned the lower shallow pools. They aren't hunting. They're fleeing the toxic runoff from the rift."

Through the black pillars of the trees, the first beast emerged. It was a massive, fifteen meter apex predator, its thick scales shaped like plates of oxidized steel, its head flat and dominated by three pairs of blind, milky eyes that had been clouded by chemical corruption. It didn't roar; it let out a high, bubbling hiss of pure madness as the high static electricity of the forest floor arced across its metallic skin.

Behind it, two smaller serpents crashed through the needle brush, their jaws unhinged, their fangs leaking a thick, green digestive acid that hissed as it touched the obsidian roots.

"Form a three point wedge!" Kaelen ordered, his voice echoing with the absolute authority of a commander who had cleared the frontier sectors. He ignored the fire blooming in his ribs, his good left arm driving his iron pipe forward to intercept the first beast's strike. "Jaren, Tiran, target the eye clusters! SC, drop the frequency wire across the path!"

The clearing erupted into a maelstrom of kinetic violence. The massive steel serpent lunged forward with impossible velocity, its snout slamming into the concrete foundation of an old filter basin where Jaren had been standing a millisecond before. The concrete shattered into a cloud of gray dust. Jaren tumbled backward, firing his compact laser pistol into the beast's lower jaw, the green light illuminating the impervious scales with a shower of blinding white sparks.

"The armor is too thick!" Tiran roared, swinging his heavy hydraulic wrench down onto the second serpent's neck cluster, the impact producing a loud, metallic clang that vibrated through the ground. The beast flinched, its tail snapping around in a wide, vicious arc that caught Tiran across the chest and threw his massive frame into an obsidian trunk.

Kaelen stepped into the line of the apex serpent's retreat. The curse wound along his ribs was a blinding sheet of white static now, but his tactical mind remained cold, clinical, and precise. He timed the beast's breathing cycle, his boots sliding over the crunching needles as he lunged beneath the unhinged jaw. With a short, precise thrust, he drove the jagged end of his iron pipe straight through the soft tissue behind the serpent's third rib cluster, the single nerve node his old military logs had cataloged.

The serpent let out a final, bubbling shriek, its massive steel frame shuddering before it collapsed into the dirt, its dark blood soaking Kaelen's combat uniform in a reeking, metallic grease.

"Two more coming from the ridge!" SC called out, his cloak torn as he scrambled back from a secondary strike, his analytical mask shattered by a flying shard of concrete.

But before the remaining beasts could close the circle, a sharp, high frequency hum vibrated through the canopy from the eastern air sector. The metallic needle leaves above them were violently sheared away as a series of heavy transport ships dropped low through the branches, their underbelly searchlights turning the dark forest into a blinding, clinical white arena.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

A dozen black uniformed vanguard soldiers dropped from the deployment lines, their heavy boots slamming into the iron needles with a synchronization that signaled professional execution. In the center of the drop team was Sass, her red hair wild under her helmet, her high frequency blade already humming with a sick, yellow light.

"Southern Alliance vanguard!" Jaren choked out, his weapon jammed by the metallic sand. "They boxed us from the flank!"

The vanguard didn't engage the star beasts; they deployed a series of automated sonic arrays along the ridge, the high frequency vibrations instantly turning the remaining serpents into thrashing, disoriented masses that fled back down toward the toxic river basins.

Kaelen stood in the center of the clearing, his iron pipe dripping with dark beast blood, his gray eyes locking onto the figure descending from the lead transport ship.

It was Moran. Her three meter iridescent black wings flapped with a slow, arrogant rhythm as she settled onto a broken concrete pillar, her vertical pupils narrowing as she examined the bloodied, exhausted squad below her. Her black uniform was spotless, her face lined with the dark markings of high tier integration that twitched with amusement.

"Look what our tracking wedge pulled from the timber line," Moran said, her voice a smooth, clicking rasp that carried over the hum of the ships' engines. She landed with a light clack of her boots, her gaze passing over Jaren and Tiran before stopping entirely on Kaelen's tall, imposing frame. "A disgraced general from the inner sectors, running through the dirt like a low tier scavenger."

"Moran," Kaelen said, his voice flat. He could feel the trap closing. His squad was out of ammunition, Tiran was injured against the tree line, and the curse in his side was a ticking clock that had reached its final minutes.

He made the calculation in a single second. If they fought as a unified column, the vanguard ships would clear the entire square with their plasma turrets. The only path to survival for Jaren and the others was a tactical diversion.

"Secure the perimeter," Kaelen whispered to SC, his voice too low for the Alliance sensors to pick up. "Take the boy and the merchant. Move through the drainage ducts while I hold the line."

"Kaelen, it's an absolute wipe," SC said, his grip tightening on the General's sleeve.

"It's a tactical trade," Kaelen snapped, pushing him back into the shadow of the obsidian roots. He stepped forward into the full glare of the searchlights, raising his iron pipe with his single uninjured arm, exposing his silhouette completely to the Alliance vanguard.

"Moran! You want the name that unraveled your canyon facility? It's standing right here. Let's see how much steel your vanguard has when the targets aren't bound in chains."

Moran's vertical pupils flared with wild, predatory interest. She let out a sharp laugh, her wings flaring out to their full span.

"Heh. A broken hero wants to act as bait for his little outcasts. Fascinating. Teams three and four, isolate the General. The rest of the trash is secondary."

The clearing became a slaughterhouse of motion. Kaelen threw himself into the vanguard line, his movements a blur of pure, disciplined technique that ignored the structural failure of his ribs. He brought the iron pipe down across the helmet of the first guard, the impact cracking the composite plating. He stepped inside the thrust of a secondary lance, his elbow striking the soldier's jaw before pivoting to use the body as a shield against a volley of laser fire.

He was fighting three, five, eight soldiers simultaneously, his tactical mind cataloging their movements even as his physical sight began to blur with dark streaks of violet radiation from the curse. He was winning the distance, drawing the entire Alliance squad away from the drainage grate where SC and Shuang were moving the injured Tiran.

Moran watched the display from her pillar, her smile turning into something deep, dark, and dangerous.

"Fearsome," she murmured, her wings snapping down as she dropped from the stone, moving with impossible speed across the iron needles. "The reports didn't do your frame justice, Kaelen."

Kaelen turned to parry her descent, his iron pipe rising to block her high frequency blade, but his side chose that exact millisecond to give out. A massive surge of violet energy exploded from the curse wound, the cold static tearing through his lungs and forcing a stream of dark, ruined blood past his lips.

He stumbled, his knee hitting the sharp iron needles.

Moran didn't deliver a kinetic strike. She stepped inside his guard, her hand, cold and smooth, reaching out to gently trace the line of Kaelen's jaw. Her fingers slid down his neck until they rested over his pulsing jugular vein. She leaned her face close to his ear, her vertical pupils wide with an undisguised sense of oppression, her breath hot against his skin.

"So tall, so powerful," Moran whispered, her voice a teasing, physical purr that vibrated against his ear as her other hand lazily trailed down the front of his torn combat uniform, her fingers lingering over the blood crusted on his chest. "It's such a pity to find a General in a place like this. Why fight for these unaligned outcasts, Kaelen? If you join my vanguard, I can show you what absolute power looks like on Eris Star. We could switch places with the regional bosses within a cycle."

Kaelen spit dark blood onto her black uniform sleeve, his gray eyes narrowed into two lines of pure, frozen hatred.

"You leak too much grease, Moran. Get your hands off my uniform."

Moran's smile hardened, her expression turning into a cold mask of contempt.

"A stubborn toy. I love when they don't break on the first calibration check."

She raised her hand to signal Sass for the containment chains, but before her fingers could clear her shoulder, an unfamiliar presence registered within the field.

Kaelen's tactical mind caught the shadow a fraction of a second before the alarms on Moran's ship went off. A figure had emerged from the absolute darkness behind the obsidian trunk, moving without a single trace of thermal or kinetic energy.

It was Lin Leng, the S class operative Moran had summoned from the sub level bunker.

But she wasn't wearing the Southern Alliance insignia. Her uniform was gray, non reflective, and bore the distinct, sharp silver trim of Marshal Valerius's personal division.

Kaelen tried to pivot his weapon, but a sudden, devastating impact struck him from behind. A high frequency energy lance, the exact weapon that left the geometric scar on Shuang's chest, was driven straight into his upper shoulder blade from the rear. The kinetic discharge tore through his nervous system, completely shattering the remaining resistance in his muscles and sending him reeling into the dirt.

"Lin Leng..." Moran hissed, turning her wings to face the newcomer, her vertical pupils twitching with sudden, sharp incredulity. "What is the meaning of this vector? The boss didn't sign a target shift for the General."

Lin Leng didn't answer with words. She raised her primary hand, and a massive, blinding flash of pure, cold Imperial energy erupted from her palm, momentarily disabling the local electronic systems and throwing Moran's vanguard squad into absolute disarray.

"The Marshal signed the order six cycles ago, Moran," Lin Leng said, her voice flat, devoid of any hybrid clicking. "The Alliance was merely the extraction tool. The General belongs to Area A."

Kaelen lay flat against the iron needles, his vision turning into a swirling vortex of deep violet and absolute black as the curse wound, triggered by the energy lance discharge, underwent a total cellular overload. The black veins exploded across his chest, tracing a path of irreversible necrosis toward his heart.

Through the fading white static of his sight, he saw Moran's black wings flaring in rage as she engaged the Imperial guards, the clearing dissolving into a final storm of laser fire and screaming metal.

Then the cold reached his chest.

Kaelen's eyes closed, his consciousness slipping into the silent void of the iron forest.
