Chapter 42 - Chapter 42

The tactical layout of the central Guild fortress inside the inner city blocks resembled a vertical iron prism. It rose twelve stories above the neon drenched grid of District D, its seamless durasteel walls reinforced with kinetic absorption fields that could withstand an orbital artillery strike.

At 01:45, fifteen minutes before the primary vault rotation cycle, Shuang's upgraded armored transport settled into a dark cargo transit lane beneath the fortress's eastern delivery terminal.

Kaelen checked the lead lined seal on his uniform shirt. The anti radiation counter agent had successfully frozen the curse necrosis, but his right ribs still felt like cold glass. Beside him in the dim cabin light, SC was running a diagnostic sweep across his portable data array, the silver transponder stud in his left ear flashing a faint green.

"The Guild's main firewall runs on a twenty four hour biometric cycle," SC said, his voice dropped into a low, clinical murmur. "Every terminal requires a synchronized genetic thumbprint from an S rank administrative officer. But Shuang's logistics cell has executed a neat patch."

Shuang tilted her head from the passenger seat, a cold, sharp smile playing across her lips as she tossed two metallic identity tokens onto the console. "Those tokens carry cloned biometric signatures from the Fifth Military Region's old supply marshals. They will buy your vanguard exactly four minutes of unalarmed clearance once you breach the central server vault on the eighth level."

"Jaren, Tiran," Kaelen commanded, his short sentences cutting through the engine hum. "Maintain a continuous extraction loop on the lower transit deck. If the security grid flashes crimson before we clear the terminal, you trigger the vehicle's thermal smoke canisters to mask the lane."

"Understood, General," Jaren said, his hand steady on his weapon hilt. "We won't let the perimeter close."

Kaelen didn't waste another second. He and SC slipped from the rear hatch, their tall frames wrapped in black combat cloaks that completely absorbed the flashing neon glare of the alleyway. They bypassed the heavily guarded public lobby, using a secondary waste conveyor duct Shuang had flagged on her layout maps.

They moved up the internal maintenance shafts with absolute, synchronized silence. Kaelen's S rank muscle memory handled the vertical climbs with fluid ease, his boots making no sound against the steel rungs. When they reached the reinforced bulkhead of the eighth level, SC stepped forward, inserting his compact decoding module into the data port.

Click.

The door slid open, revealing the pristine, white, sterile expanse of the central Guild registry. Rows of high conduction server pillars hummed with a low, bone rattling frequency, casting long, blue geometric shadows across the polished floorboards.

"The vault is straight ahead," SC whispered, his green eyes scanning the laser security lines running across the floor. "The rotation sequence starts in exactly forty seconds."

They advanced through the grid of light, using the cloned biometric tokens to drop the security fields one by one. When Kaelen reached the primary data terminal, he jammed his token into the central matrix, his fingers flying across the holographic keys with a commander's speed.

The system cracked open, lines of restricted Imperial data scrolling rapidly across his gray eyes.

"Isolating the primary files," Kaelen muttered.

With a final stroke, he pulled the central directory module loose. They had it. The stolen data contained the complete, high tier layout map of the Forbidden City within the capital core, revealing every hidden defense trench, automated sensor loop, and secret royal passage that Marshal Valerius's personal division used to secure the Emperor's throne.

But as SC cross referenced the file with his own device, his green eyes widened with a rare spike of calculation.

"Kaelen... look at the sub level medical logs attached to the Forbidden City infrastructure."

Kaelen leaned closer to the monitor. The data revealed that the Forbidden City didn't just house the imposter Emperor. It contained the central receiving station for the stolen life energy, the primary siphoning circle that compressed the lifeforce harvested from the prison planets.

More importantly, the decrypted files contained a specific biological breakthrough log signed by the entity codenamed "Teacher."

The log documented that the unique energy frequency inside the capital's central siphoning vault was the exact inverse of the radiation currently consuming Kaelen's side. The curse in his flesh wasn't just an unrefined byproduct. It was a tracking anchor designed to burn him from the inside out unless it was neutralized by the raw, uncompressed lifeforce held at the very center of the throne room.

"It's a zero sum equation," SC said, a dangerous, sharp smile returning to his face as he locked the data module into his cloak. "The only place in the galaxy where you can completely break this curse is inside the deepest vault of the Forbidden City."

"Then the alignment is locked," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into pure iron as he pocketed the stolen map. "We don't just infiltrate the capital to expose the rot. We break the core to save my life."

The primary vault rotation timer hit zero.

A high pitched, deafening security siren instantly erupted across the eighth level, the blue server lights turning into a flashing, violent crimson glare as the heavy steel bulkheads began to descend from the ceiling.

"The ghost protocol is dead!" SC shouted over the roar of the alarms. "The extraction line is active! Run!"

They threw themselves through the closing gap of the bulkhead, their cloaks flaring as they raced toward the western drainage chute, the layout of the Forbidden City securely locked in their hands, and a definitive path toward Kaelen's survival burning in their minds.
