The cold did not recede.
It changed shape.
What had previously been an absolute void surrounding Kaelen's consciousness narrowed into a sharp, localized pressure directly behind his left earlobe. The sensation pulsed in precise intervals, each wave carrying a faint vibration through the bones of his skull.
Blink.
A rhythmic electronic chime followed.
It was not an external sound.
It was bone conduction.
The signal traveled directly through his skull with the clean, flat frequency of a high tier Imperial encryption key.
"The neural bus is running at twenty percent efficiency, General."
The familiar voice entered his consciousness without disturbing the silence around him.
SC.
His tone remained calm, almost irritatingly detached.
"Your breathing is shallow. If you allow your alignment to drop any further, the local bio monitors will trigger a secondary security lock."
Kaelen forced his left eye open.
For several seconds, he saw nothing except fractured white static.
Then the darkness separated into shapes.
A ceiling.
Concrete.
A narrow strip of metal reinforcement.
A faint blue glow running along the base of a containment field.
His tactical mind began reconstructing the room automatically.
One second.
Two.
Three.
The ceiling was approximately three meters above him.
The walls were reinforced industrial concrete.
The generator vibration beneath the floor suggested a sub level power station directly below or adjacent to the detention ring.
There were no windows.
No natural ventilation.
No visible guard station.
Kaelen tested his arms.
Pain answered immediately.
His wrists were secured behind him by thick thermal restraints. His shattered shoulder was immobilized against the vertical frame of an automated containment capsule, and every minor movement sent a dull pressure through the damaged joint.
He tried to move his legs.
They were free.
That was the first useful piece of information.
The second was more concerning.
His black combat uniform had been cut away from the waist upward.
The curse wound along his right ribs was completely exposed.
Dark branching veins covered the damaged flesh like cracks spreading across black glass. They had hardened since the forest battle, turning almost completely obsidian. A faint violet radiation leaked from the wound in slow pulses, disappearing into several small tracking nodes mounted around the floor.
Kaelen inhaled carefully.
The breath barely reached his lungs.
"Where..."
His voice emerged as a dry, broken rasp.
"Do not expand your lungs."
SC immediately interrupted him.
"You are inside the secondary detention ring of the Southern Alliance compound. They transferred you here after the energy lance overloaded your system in the forest."
Kaelen's eyes narrowed.
"The others."
"Alive."
The answer came instantly.
"Jaren and Tiran escaped through the drainage sector. Shuang abandoned the transport and diverted the pursuit toward the western utility pad. They separated deliberately because keeping the entire group together would have allowed the Alliance to track all of you through a single thermal signature."
Kaelen's breathing steadied slightly.
"And you?"
A quiet laugh passed through the bone conduction channel.
"I was never captured."
Kaelen's gaze shifted toward the darkness.
"Then how are you speaking to me?"
"Look at your left ear."
Kaelen tilted his head as far as the restraints allowed.
Something small caught the faint blue light.
A silver stud.
He recognized it immediately.
It was the same type of decorative piece SC had worn since their escape from the prison transport.
Kaelen's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But for a man as controlled as him, the shift was significant.
"You planted an Imperial transponder on me."
"Correct."
"Before the deployment."
"Correct."
"You expected me to be captured."
"I expected you to do something reckless."
Kaelen stared at the tiny device.
SC continued before he could respond.
"A commander entering an active S class combat zone without a secondary tracking anchor is a liability to his own survival. You were also bleeding enough to illuminate half the forest. I needed a signal that could survive containment shielding."
Kaelen's eyes hardened.
"You could have mentioned it."
"And ruin the surprise?"
For the first time since waking, Kaelen almost smiled.
Almost.
Instead, he closed his eyes for a second and reconstructed the previous battle.
Moran.
The Southern Alliance vanguard.
Lin Leng.
The energy lance.
His own collapse.
Then the question that mattered most.
"What happened to Moran?"
SC was silent for half a second.
"Alive."
Kaelen opened his eyes again.
"Condition."
"Severe but nonfatal injuries. Your attack damaged her wing power feed and several of the integration channels around her neck. She lost consciousness during the facility breach, but her biological readings remain stable."
Kaelen exhaled slowly.
That was acceptable.
He had never intended to waste strength killing her when escape was the priority.
"And Lin Leng?"
" Injured."
SC's voice became more analytical.
"Not dead."
Kaelen's eyes narrowed.
"She survived?"
"Your strike penetrated the upper chest joint and damaged her armor system. She lost a considerable amount of blood, but Area A retrieved her before the Southern Alliance could finish securing the vault. She is currently somewhere in the upper containment network."
Kaelen was silent.
Three enemies.
Moran injured.
Lin Leng injured.
Neither dead.
That meant both remained variables.
And variables could return.
"Time."
"It is 0400 hours."
Kaelen's tactical instincts immediately sharpened.
"Six minutes until the guard rotation."
"Precisely."
SC's voice remained calm.
"Shuang has already bypassed the western fence lines. Her armored transport is positioned on the utility pad with its engines running under a low voltage cycle. Jaren has reached the external drainage network. Tiran is with him."
Kaelen tested the restraints again.
The thermal straps tightened automatically.
"The siphoned remnants are accelerating the necrosis."
He paused.
"I cannot guarantee a clean sprint."
"You do not need to sprint."
SC's voice became quieter.
"We are not walking out."
Kaelen looked toward the sealed door.
"What are you doing?"
"We are coming through the wall."
The floor exploded.
BOOM.
A synchronized kinetic blast tore through the reinforced security door.
The hydraulic locking mechanism screamed.
Concrete fragments erupted into the room.
Dust swallowed the blue containment lights, turning the entire vault into a cloud of gray particulate matter.
Emergency sirens immediately began screaming through the facility.
The sound was deafening.
Red warning lights flashed along the ceiling.
Kaelen's restraints remained locked.
Then a shadow moved through the smoke.
SC.
His dark cloak was torn along one side, and several small fragments of concrete clung to his shoulders. His vibrant green eyes were completely clear beneath his hood.
He moved directly toward the containment capsule.
No hesitation.
No wasted movement.
He inserted a compact decoding module into the primary interface.
A series of symbols flashed across the terminal.
The thermal restraints released.
Kaelen's arms dropped.
His shattered shoulder screamed.
His knees almost buckled when he tried to stand.
SC caught his uninjured shoulder.
"Slowly."
"I am not fragile."
"I know."
SC pulled him upright.
"That is the problem."
Kaelen steadied himself against the capsule.
His vision flickered.
SC reached inside his cloak and produced a small glass vial.
Silver liquid moved inside it with a faint internal glow.
Kaelen immediately recognized the substance.
"Royal stabilization compound."
SC uncorked it.
"Drink."
Kaelen stared at him.
"Where did you get that?"
"Later."
SC pressed the vial into his hand.
"Drink now."
Kaelen swallowed the liquid.
The effect was immediate.
Heat spread through his throat and down into his chest.
For three seconds, it felt as though molten metal was flowing through his veins.
Then the pain changed.
The curse did not disappear.
It simply stopped advancing.
The black veins around his ribs stopped spreading.
The violet radiation leaking from the wound diminished to a faint pulse.
His lungs opened.
His vision cleared.
His muscles responded.
Kaelen flexed his left hand.
Strength returned to his fingers.
"How long?"
"Forty minutes."
SC discarded the empty vial.
"After that, the decay resumes."
Kaelen picked up a heavy metal brace that had fallen from the damaged containment capsule.
"Forty minutes is enough."
"That depends on what you intend to do with them."
A cold mechanical voice interrupted from the doorway.
"Your extraction ends here."
Kaelen turned.
The smoke parted.
Lin Leng stepped into the vault.
Her gray uniform was scorched and torn. The ceramic plating across her chest was fractured from Kaelen's previous attack, and dried blood darkened one side of her collar.
She was clearly injured.
But she was standing.
Her right hand held a high frequency short blade.
The weapon hummed with cold Imperial energy.
Her eyes remained fixed on Kaelen.
"The Marshal's fleet has already entered the upper atmosphere," she said. "You are not leaving this facility."
SC shifted slightly.
"Your survival rate is impressive."
Lin Leng ignored him.
Her gaze remained on Kaelen.
"The General belongs to Area A."
Kaelen tightened his grip around the metal brace.
"Then you should have verified the kill beneath the trees."
Lin Leng raised her blade.
Kaelen moved first.
The royal stabilization compound surged through his body as he crossed the room.
Lin Leng swung.
The blade cut through empty air.
Kaelen stepped inside the attack.
His damaged shoulder screamed, but his movement remained precise.
He struck her wrist.
The short blade flew across the floor.
Lin Leng attempted to pivot.
Kaelen caught her before she could complete the movement.
The metal brace drove into the damaged upper chest joint of her armor.
A sharp crack echoed through the vault.
Lin Leng staggered backward.
Her breath escaped in a broken gasp.
Kaelen followed.
He struck once more, driving her against the fractured doorway.
The wall shook.
Lin Leng's knees weakened.
She remained conscious for only another second before collapsing against the ruined frame.
Kaelen looked down at her.
"Stay alive."
Lin Leng's eyes barely opened.
"Why?"
"Because I intend to find out who sent you."
Kaelen turned away.
SC was already moving toward the corridor.
"That was unnecessarily conversational."
"Move."
They entered the western transit hall.
The entire facility had become a storm of emergency lights, alarms, running boots, and automated security announcements.
Southern Alliance guards poured into the upper corridors.
SC moved through the maze without hesitation.
He did not consult a visible map.
He simply turned at each junction as though he already knew the structure.
Left.
Down.
Right.
Through a maintenance passage.
Then another.
Kaelen followed.
His feet remained steady, but the stabilization compound was already burning through his bloodstream.
They reached a narrow drainage shaft.
SC lifted the access grate.
"Down."
Kaelen lowered himself into the shaft.
The walls were wet with condensation and coated with metallic residue.
Behind them, voices echoed through the corridor.
"Search the detention ring!"
"Seal the western sector!"
"Do not let them reach the utility pad!"
SC dropped into the shaft and replaced the grate.
They continued forward.
Several minutes later, distant explosions shook the walls.
Kaelen stopped.
"What was that?"
"Shuang."
SC continued walking.
"She has activated the transport's decoy systems."
Another explosion followed.
Then another.
The facility alarms changed frequency.
SC's expression remained calm.
"She is buying us a route."
They emerged from the drainage network onto the western utility pad.
The yellow dust storm struck Kaelen immediately.
The wind was violent.
Metallic sand struck his exposed skin like needles.
Fifty meters away, Shuang's armored transport hovered above the tarmac.
Its engines were screaming against the storm.
Shuang leaned out of the passenger portal.
"Kaelen! SC! Get inside!"
Kaelen took one step forward.
Then the sky opened.
Southern Alliance transport ships descended through the dust.
Plasma fire ripped across the utility pad.
The concrete erupted.
Kaelen stopped.
A blast detonated between him and Shuang's vehicle.
Heat slammed into his chest.
SC grabbed his belt and dragged him backward as another volley tore through the railing beside them.
"The route is gone!"
Kaelen looked toward the transport.
Shuang understood immediately.
She raised one hand.
The armored vehicle accelerated.
Three plasma strikes hit the outer plating.
The transport tilted violently but remained airborne.
Shuang did not wait.
She pushed the vehicle directly into the storm.
Its engines vanished into the yellow haze.
SC watched the retreating silhouette.
"She is drawing the ships away."
Kaelen's expression remained cold.
"Then we use the opening."
He turned toward the forest.
The Giant Tree Forest stood beyond the utility pad like an enormous black wall.
SC nodded.
"Agreed."
They ran.
For twenty minutes they moved beneath the iron canopy.
The facility alarms gradually disappeared behind them.
The metallic needle leaves swallowed the searchlights.
The obsidian trunks blocked the wind.
But the stabilization compound was weakening.
Kaelen's breathing became heavier.
His vision blurred.
The black veins around his ribs began to pulse again.
SC noticed.
"Stop."
Kaelen continued walking.
"Kaelen."
The General finally stopped.
His knees buckled.
SC caught him before he struck the ground.
They moved beneath the roots of an ancient iron wood tree where the massive trunk had formed a hollowed recess.
Kaelen lowered himself against the cold metallic bark.
His breathing was shallow.
The stabilization compound had nearly exhausted itself.
SC removed his cloak and spread it across the iron needles.
Then he pulled a reinforced military bandage from an inner compartment.
"Hold still."
Kaelen looked at him.
"You carry medical equipment too."
"I carry equipment for situations where you behave exactly as predicted."
SC knelt beside him.
He wrapped the bandage around Kaelen's right ribs, tightening it carefully around the curse wound.
The pressure reduced the radiation leakage.
Kaelen watched his hands.
Long fingers.
Steady movements.
No hesitation.
The same hands that could manipulate Imperial encryption systems now worked with the precision of a field medic.
Kaelen's suspicion deepened.
"You speak of the High Command like an old neighbor."
SC tightened the final clip.
"You carry royal stabilization compounds."
He checked the seal.
"You possess Imperial encryption keys."
Another adjustment.
"You planted a military transponder inside my ear without telling me."
SC finally looked up.
Kaelen's gray eyes were fixed on him.
"Who are you?"
For several seconds, SC said nothing.
The wind moved through the iron canopy above them.
The metallic leaves clicked together.
A faint violet glow pulsed beneath Kaelen's bandages.
SC slowly stood.
He pulled his hood over his green eyes.
A subtle smile appeared.
"You will know soon enough."
Kaelen's expression hardened.
"That is not an answer."
"It is the only answer you are getting tonight."
SC turned toward the darkness.
"Save your strength."
Kaelen pushed himself upright.
"Where are we going?"
SC looked back.
"Toward the Rift Valley."
Kaelen's eyes narrowed.
"Shuang's rendezvous point."
"Her secondary rendezvous point."
SC's smile returned.
"The primary one is already compromised."
Kaelen absorbed the information.
"So we are moving deeper into enemy territory."
"Correct."
"And you know where the siphoning terminal is."
"I know where one of them is."
Kaelen stared at him.
SC's expression became more serious.
"The terminal in the forest is not the main system. It is only a transponder node."
Kaelen's tactical mind immediately began calculating the implications.
A node.
Not the source.
Not the main machine.
A relay.
Something capable of connecting the forest facility to a larger network.
"If we reach it," Kaelen said, "we can trace the main siphoning system."
"Exactly."
Kaelen slowly stood.
His body still hurt.
His curse was still advancing.
His shoulder was still damaged.
But his tactical focus had returned.
"Then we go."
SC nodded.
The two men disappeared beneath the black iron canopy.
Behind them, the Southern Alliance compound continued burning beneath the dust storm.
Somewhere inside that compound, Moran remained alive, severely injured but recovering.
Somewhere above the facility, Area A was already reorganizing its forces.
And somewhere inside the Imperial command network, a new order was being prepared.
Kaelen did not know that the transponder inside his ear was more than a tracking device.
He did not know that SC had used it to access an encryption network that should have been impossible for a prisoner to touch.
And he certainly did not know that the man walking beside him carried a connection to the Imperial throne itself.
For now, there was only the forest.
The Rift Valley.
The hidden siphoning network.
And the growing certainty that the battle for Eris Star was far larger than the General had originally calculated.
