The Obsidian Hall fell into a heavy silence after Elder Vorath's command.
"Prove it."
The words hung in the air like a blade poised to fall. Thirteen pairs of ancient eyes bored into Yè Júnhào and Xuěyáo, some cold with suspicion, others gleaming with cruel curiosity.
Yè Júnhào's grip on her hand remained steady, but she could feel the coiled power in his body — the ancient predator ready to strike if any of them made a move toward her.
Lady Seraphine leaned forward on her throne, violet eyes sparkling with interest. "Yes, Lord Júnhào. Prove that this human does not weaken you. Let us see the truth of your… attachment."
One of the Twin Shadows — the one with silver streaks in his dark hair — smiled lazily. "Perhaps a simple test. Have her stand alone in the center of the hall. Let us all taste her scent without your interference. If you can remain unmoved while we judge her, then perhaps your claim holds merit."
A low murmur of agreement rippled through the Council.
Xuěyáo's pulse quickened, but she refused to show fear. She gently squeezed Yè Júnhào's hand, then stepped forward on her own, releasing his grip. She walked to the exact center of the Obsidian Hall, the glowing crimson veins in the black floor pulsing beneath her feet.
She stood tall, chin lifted, blue eyes clear and unafraid. The power from his blood hummed quietly in her veins, helping her maintain the breathing technique that masked her scent — though she knew it would not hold perfectly against thirteen ancients.
Yè Júnhào remained where he was, every muscle tense, fangs aching with the urge to protect her. His stormy eyes never left her.
Elder Vorath raised a skeletal hand. "Begin."
The Council members leaned forward as one.
The air shifted.
Xuěyáo felt it immediately — invisible threads of power reaching toward her, probing, testing. Her scent slowly unfurled despite her efforts, sweet and intoxicating, like night-blooming jasmine mixed with fresh mountain snow and something uniquely hers.
Gasps and low growls echoed through the hall.
Lady Seraphine's eyes widened with hunger. "Magnificent…"
One of the more monstrous Council members — a hulking vampire with jagged scars across his face — licked his lips. "Such purity… it could fuel armies."
The Twin Shadows leaned toward each other, whispering in unison, "She binds. She truly binds."
Yè Júnhào's hands clenched into fists at his sides. Crimson flooded his irises fully, but he did not move. His jaw was locked so tightly that a muscle ticked visibly. Every instinct screamed at him to rush forward, to shield her, to tear apart anyone who dared look at her with such open greed.
Yet he remained rooted in place.
For her.
Xuěyáo met his gaze across the hall, offering him a small, steady smile. *I'm alright,* her eyes seemed to say. *Trust me.*
Elder Vorath's voice cut through the growing tension. "Enough. Lord Júnhào, you have restrained yourself… for now. But restraint is not proof of strength. Tell us — have you bonded with this human beyond mere feeding? Has her blood changed you?"
Yè Júnhào stepped forward to stand beside Xuěyáo once more, taking her hand openly in front of the entire Council. His voice rang out clear and unyielding.
"I have tasted her blood. She has tasted mine. The bond is forming — not of slavery, but of choice. Her presence does not weaken me. It gives me purpose beyond endless night. I will not discard her to satisfy your fear of change."
A shocked silence followed.
Then chaos erupted.
Lady Seraphine laughed delightedly. "How romantic! The solitary wolf has finally found a mate."
Elder Vorath slammed his hand on the arm of his throne. "This is blasphemy against the old laws! Vampires do not bond with humans as equals. She is prey. Nothing more."
The hulking Council member growled, "Give her to the Council. Her scent could be studied… weaponized."
Yè Júnhào's aura flared, dark crimson energy crackling around him like living shadows. "Touch her, and I will paint these walls with your blood — Council or not."
The tension reached a breaking point.
Elder Vorath raised both hands, silencing the hall with a wave of oppressive power.
"Enough! We will deliberate. Lord Yè Júnhào and the human will be given guest quarters for the night. Tomorrow, we will conduct the formal Trial of Blood and Will. If you fail, Júnhào… you will be stripped of your territory and the girl will become Council property."
He fixed Xuěyáo with a cold stare. "And you, little human — pray that your scent is worth the war you are about to ignite."
The doors to the Obsidian Hall opened once more.
Yè Júnhào pulled Xuěyáo protectively against his side as they were escorted out by crimson-armored guards.
In the long corridor leading to their assigned quarters, he stopped abruptly, turning her to face him. His hands trembled slightly as they cupped her face.
"You were magnificent," he whispered, voice rough with emotion. "But tomorrow's trial… it will be far worse. They will try to force me to hurt you. Or force you to reject me."
Xuěyáo rose on her toes and kissed him fiercely, pouring every ounce of her love and courage into it.
"Then we will show them that neither of us can be forced," she said against his lips. "Together."
In the shadows of the Crimson Spire, as they were led to their heavily guarded chambers, the Council's whispers already spread like poison.
A human had challenged the old order.
And the ancient predator who loved her was ready to burn the world for her.
The true trial was coming.
And with it — the flames of war.
