Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Night Before the Trial

The guest quarters assigned to them in the Crimson Spire were luxurious yet oppressive — a vast suite of interconnected rooms carved from the same blood-red stone as the tower itself. Heavy crimson drapes blocked out any hint of the outside world, and the air carried the faint metallic tang of old blood mixed with incense.

Yè Júnhào dismissed the guards at the door with a single sharp command, then sealed the entrance with a wave of his hand, layering dark crimson wards that shimmered briefly before fading into the stone.

Only then did he turn to Xuěyáo.

She stood near the center of the main chamber, arms wrapped around herself, the elegant sapphire gown she had worn to the hall now feeling too constricting. The adrenaline from facing the Council was fading, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion mixed with quiet fear.

Without a word, Yè Júnhào crossed the room and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest. His cool body enveloped her like a shield, one hand cradling the back of her head while the other stroked slowly down her spine.

"You were extraordinary tonight," he murmured into her hair, voice low and rough with emotion. "Standing alone before thirteen ancients without flinching… most humans would have crumbled."

Xuěyáo let out a shaky breath, pressing her face into the fabric of his black coat. "I was terrified. But I kept thinking… if I showed fear, they would see you as weak. I couldn't let that happen."

He pulled back just enough to cup her face with both hands, thumbs brushing away the faint traces of tension around her eyes. His stormy irises still carried lingering crimson from the confrontation.

"You make me proud in ways I never thought possible," he said softly. "But tomorrow's Trial of Blood and Will… it will be designed to break us. They will force me to choose between my power and your safety. They may even demand I feed on you publicly, or command you to reject me in front of them."

Xuěyáo's blue eyes hardened with resolve. "Then we refuse to play their game. Whatever they ask, we face it together — as partners. Not Master and servant. Not predator and prey."

A faint, pained smile touched his lips. "My brave snow child."

He led her to the large canopied bed draped in black and crimson silk. They undressed each other slowly, not with passion, but with quiet tenderness. He helped her out of the sapphire gown, his cool fingers tracing the faint bite marks on her neck with reverence. She unbuttoned his coat and shirt, pressing soft kisses to the scars across his chest.

Once they were both bare, he drew her down onto the bed and pulled the silk sheets over them. He lay on his back, and she curled against his side, head resting over his slowly beating heart, one leg draped over his.

For a long time, they simply held each other in silence.

Then Yè Júnhào spoke, voice barely above a whisper.

"If the worst happens tomorrow… if they try to separate us or harm you… I want you to know that I will burn this entire Spire to ash before I let them take you from me. My territory, my title, my immortality — none of it matters without you."

Xuěyáo lifted her head, meeting his gaze in the dim candlelight. "And I will fight beside you. I am no longer the girl who came here only to save her grandmother. I came for her… but I stayed for you. I love you, Yè Júnhào. Not the legend. Not the Master. You."

The confession hung between them, raw and beautiful.

His eyes flared bright crimson for a heartbeat, then softened. He rolled them so she lay beneath him, his body caging hers protectively. He kissed her — slow, deep, and full of centuries of longing finally given voice. His fangs grazed her lower lip, but he did not bite. Instead, he poured every ounce of his restrained hunger and love into the kiss.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing harder.

"I love you too, Xuěyáo," he whispered against her mouth. "You are my eternal prey… and my eternal beloved."

He lowered his head to her neck, fangs sinking in with exquisite care. This bite was different — not driven by hunger alone, but by devotion. Pleasure surged through her in warm, golden waves, binding their souls even tighter. She arched beneath him, soft moans escaping as he drank just enough to strengthen her for tomorrow.

When he sealed the marks with gentle licks, he gathered her close again, holding her as if she were the most fragile and precious thing in existence.

"Sleep now," he murmured. "I will watch over you. Tomorrow, we face the trial as one."

Xuěyáo nestled deeper into his embrace, her fingers tracing lazy circles over his heart.

Outside their warded chambers, the Crimson Spire whispered with schemes and plots. The Council deliberated late into the night. Shadowfang spies lurked in the shadows. Lady Seraphine smiled in her private quarters, already planning how to exploit the situation.

But inside the silk-draped bed, wrapped in each other's arms, a human woman and an ancient vampire found a moment of perfect peace.

Love had been spoken.

A bond had been sealed deeper than blood.

And whatever the Trial of Blood and Will would bring at dawn…

They would face it together.
