The massive iron gates of the Crimson Spire groaned open like the jaws of some ancient beast, revealing a courtyard bathed in blood-red torchlight. Tall obsidian pillars lined the path, each carved with runes that pulsed faintly as the carriage passed. The air grew heavier, thick with the scent of old blood, incense, and raw power.
Xuěyáo's heart hammered against her ribs as she peered out the window. The Spire towered above them, its crimson stone walls seeming to drink in the moonlight. Gargoyles with elongated fangs watched silently from the heights, their eyes glowing with faint magical light.
Yè Júnhào sat beside her, his posture rigid, one hand resting possessively on her thigh. His face was a mask of cold authority, but she could feel the tension radiating from him — the subtle tightening of his fingers, the faint crimson glow flickering at the edges of his stormy eyes.
"Stay close to me at all times," he murmured, voice low enough for only her to hear. "Do not speak unless directly addressed. Shield your scent as I taught you. And remember — they will try to provoke us."
She nodded, squeezing his hand. "I remember. Partners."
The carriage came to a smooth stop before the grand entrance. Elite guards in crimson armor flanked the steps, their faces hidden behind visored helmets. A tall, elegant vampire woman with silver hair and piercing violet eyes awaited them at the top of the stairs. She wore flowing robes of deep scarlet embroidered with golden threads.
"Lord Yè Júnhào," she greeted, her voice smooth as silk but edged with ice. "The Council has been expecting you. And… your companion."
Yè Júnhào stepped out first, offering his hand to Xuěyáo. She took it, stepping down with graceful composure despite the nervous flutter in her stomach. The woman's gaze immediately locked onto her, nostrils flaring subtly as she inhaled.
"So this is the scented human," the woman said, lips curving into a thin smile. "Lín Xuěyáo, is it? Your reputation precedes you."
Xuěyáo kept her expression neutral, masking her scent with the breathing technique Yè Júnhào had drilled into her. "I am honored to be here."
The woman — Lady Seraphine, Xuěyáo guessed from his earlier descriptions — let out a soft, amused laugh. "Bold. We shall see how long that boldness lasts inside the Obsidian Hall."
They were led through grand corridors lined with portraits of ancient vampires and tapestries depicting bloody battles. The air grew colder the deeper they went, until they reached a set of towering double doors carved with twisting serpents and orchids.
Before the doors opened, Yè Júnhào pulled Xuěyáo aside for a brief, private moment. His cool hands framed her face, thumbs stroking her cheeks.
"Whatever happens in there," he whispered, forehead resting against hers, "know that my choice is already made. You."
She rose on her toes and kissed him quickly, pouring all her courage into the touch. "And mine is you."
The doors swung open with a resonant boom.
The Obsidian Hall was vast and circular, its black stone walls veined with glowing crimson. Thirteen thrones of carved obsidian and blood-red crystal formed a semicircle on a raised dais. Twelve figures already sat upon them — ancient vampires of varying appearances, from ethereal beauty to monstrous deformity. The thirteenth throne, at the center, remained empty for now.
All eyes turned to them as they entered.
Yè Júnhào walked forward with regal grace, Xuěyáo at his side. He stopped at the center of the hall and inclined his head slightly — a show of respect, but not submission.
"Honored Council," he said, voice ringing clear and commanding. "I have answered your summons."
Elder Vorath, a gaunt man with a long white beard and eyes like frozen steel, leaned forward. "Yè Júnhào. You bring a human into our sacred hall. Explain yourself."
Before Yè Júnhào could respond, Lady Seraphine spoke from her throne, her violet eyes gleaming with interest. "We have heard rumors. A human whose scent can bind an immortal. A maidservant secretly hired as prey… who now stands beside you as something more. Is it true that you have grown… attached?"
A ripple of murmurs spread through the Council.
One of the Twin Shadows — Kai or Lir, Xuěyáo could not tell — tilted his head, smiling with too-sharp teeth. "Her scent is indeed… intoxicating. Even from here. Tell us, Lord Júnhào, have you tasted her? Does she make you weak?"
Yè Júnhào's hand tightened around Xuěyáo's. His voice remained steady, laced with quiet power. "She is under my protection. Her presence does not weaken me. It strengthens me."
Elder Vorath's eyes narrowed. "Prove it."
The tension in the hall thickened like gathering storm clouds.
Xuěyáo felt the weight of thirteen ancient gazes upon her. Some curious. Some hungry. Some openly hostile.
She lifted her chin, meeting their stares with calm blue eyes. The power from Yè Júnhào's blood hummed quietly in her veins, giving her courage.
This was no longer just a summons.
It was the beginning of judgment.
And in the heart of the Crimson Spire, surrounded by immortals who could end them both with a word, Xuěyáo and Yè Júnhào stood together — predator and former prey, now bound by something far stronger than blood.
The Council waited.
The real trial was about to begin.
