Chapter 196 - CHAPTER 196

The corridor grew increasingly silent.

Not a calming silence.

More like a space waiting for something to happen.

The air felt cold.

And every step sounded clearly.

Adrian Blackwood stood right in front of the massive door.

Its surface was smooth.

Seamless.

It felt alive.

As if there was a system constantly monitoring.

Assessing.

Waiting.

Behind him, Leonard Graves watched the corridor.

The sound of footsteps from a distance could be heard again.

More of them.

Faster.

"We don't have much time," he said softly.

Daniel's voice came through the comms.

"I'm connected."

His tone tense.

Controlled.

"This is a layered locking system."

Sophia stared at the screen in her hand.

Her eyes sharp despite her body still feeling weak.

"Don't force it directly."

Daniel nodded, even though he couldn't be seen.

"I'm looking for a gap."

Adrian remained silent.

His hand touched the surface of the door.

He felt a faint vibration.

Like a pulse.

Like something living behind it.

Leonard turned his head.

"Don't tell me it's reacting."

Adrian answered briefly.

"Yes."

Silence fell.

Colder than before.

On the screen.

Daniel saw something change.

Patterns moving.

Not static.

Not rigid.

"This is adaptive," he said.

Sophia understood immediately.

"Meaning it learns from every attempt."

Daniel took a breath.

"And the longer we stay here, the harder it gets."

Leonard clicked his tongue softly.

"Always the same story."

Footsteps behind grew closer.

The sound of boots hitting the floor.

Fast.

Coordinated.

Adrian turned slightly.

"How long."

Daniel answered quickly.

"Two minutes."

Leonard smiled faintly.

"Plenty of time."

Sophia did not smile.

"Not for a system like this."

Daniel began typing faster.

Layer after layer opened slightly.

Every gap immediately closed again.

"It fights back against every access point."

Sophia thought quickly.

Her eyes scanning the data.

Then she spoke.

"Don't fight it."

Daniel stopped.

"What."

Sophia breathed slowly.

"Flow with it."

Silence.

Instantly understood.

Daniel adjusted his approach.

No longer forcing.

He began to follow the system's flow.

Mimicking the pattern.

Merging.

The change was immediately visible.

The layers no longer closed rapidly.

A small gap opened.

"We have a path," he said.

Adrian did not move.

His eyes shifted slightly.

More focused.

Leonard glanced back.

"They're getting closer."

The sound of footsteps was now clear.

Only a few meters away.

Adrian gave a signal.

The team took position.

Blocking the rear path.

The clash happened again.

Harder.

Closer.

Leonard moved swiftly.

Holding off the first wave.

"Hurry," he said.

Adrian remained in front of the door.

Not turning.

Not retreating.

Daniel was almost done.

"I just need a few more seconds."

Sophia gripped her device tighter.

"Focus."

Elsewhere.

Marcus Sterling stood in the control room.

His eyes on the screen.

He saw everything.

The movement.

The effort.

The pressure.

A smile slowly appeared on his face.

"They are learning."

Someone beside him asked.

"Should we stop them."

Marcus shook his head.

"Not yet."

He stepped closer to the screen.

"Let them open that door."

Silence.

"Because after that."

He paused briefly.

"Nothing will ever be the same."

Back in the corridor.

Daniel shouted.

"Done."

The door in front of Adrian vibrated.

Slowly.

Distinctly.

Its surface shifted.

Thin lines appeared.

Then slowly opened.

Light from within spilled into the corridor.

Bright.

Intense.

Leonard turned.

"Go in now."

Adrian did not hesitate.

He stepped forward.

Entering inside.

The room beyond the door was vast.

Larger than expected.

Filled with screens.

Machinery.

And control centers.

The most striking thing.

Was the silence.

No guards.

No resistance.

Leonard entered behind him.

His eyes sweeping the room.

"This is too clean."

Adrian walked deeper.

His steps measured.

His eyes observing every detail.

Daniel spoke.

"That's the main core."

In the center of the room.

A large structure stood.

Pulsing slowly.

Like a heart.

Sophia stared at the screen.

Her breath caught slightly.

"That's it."

Adrian approached.

The closer he got.

The clearer it became.

Before he could touch it.

The lights in the room suddenly dimmed.

Then.

A voice sounded.

Softly.

"Too late."

Everyone tensed.

On the screen.

Marcus appeared.

His gaze calm.

Full of control.

"You managed to get this far."

Leonard smiled faintly.

"And you were waiting."

Marcus nodded.

"Of course."

Adrian stared at the screen.

His eyes cold.

"What do you want."

Marcus smiled.

"To show you something."

Silence fell.

Then the screen changed.

A new image appeared.

Another room.

Smaller.

Darker.

And there.

Someone was bound.

Motionless.

Sophia stared at the screen.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Impossible…"

Daniel tensed.

"That is…"

Marcus spoke again.

"Every step you took."

He paused.

"I was always one step ahead."

Silence.

Heavier than before.

Adrian did not move.

His hands clenched into fists.

Because now.

This game had changed.

It was no longer just about them.

Not just about revenge.

But about something deeper.

More personal.

They truly realized.

That they hadn't just entered the enemy's lair.

They had walked right into a plan that had been prepared long ago.

And getting out.

Would not be as easy as getting in.

The silence in the room grew heavier.

Not merely tense.

More like something slowly pressing down from all directions.

Adrian Blackwood remained standing in front of the screen.

His gaze did not waver.

Yet the look in his eyes changed.

Darker.

Deeper.

Beside him, Leonard Graves narrowed his eyes.

Staring at the image displayed.

"Who is that."

His voice low.

But sharp.

Up above.

Sophia held her breath.

Her eyes unblinking.

She tried to confirm.

Searching for details.

Connecting something that wasn't yet clear.

Daniel zoomed in.

Resolution improved.

The image became clearer.

The figure looked weak.

Bound.

Their head bowed slightly.

Their face hidden in shadow.

There was something familiar.

Sophia felt her chest tighten.

"No…"

Her whisper was barely audible.

Daniel turned slightly.

"You know them."

Sophia didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes continued to fix on the screen.

Searching for certainty.

Several seconds passed.

Then.

The figure on the screen moved slightly.

Very little.

But enough.

Their face lifted a little.

Light hit part of their features.

Sophia closed her eyes for a moment.

Then opened them again.

This time without doubt.

"It's someone from the past."

Silence fell.

Not out of ignorance.

But because of the implication.

Down below.

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Good."

Adrian did not look away from the screen.

"Why him."

Marcus stepped slightly closer.

"Because he is part of the beginning."

Leonard exhaled slowly.

"And we are going back there."

Marcus nodded.

"Everything always returns to the beginning."

Up above.

Sophia gripped her device tighter.

Her mind working rapidly.

Fragments of memory began to surface.

Things that once seemed insignificant.

Now returned with different meanings.

"This isn't a coincidence," she said softly.

Daniel looked at her.

"Nothing ever is."

Sophia took a breath.

"He wants us to see this."

Daniel nodded.

"And to react."

Silence descended again.

More purposeful.

Down below.

Adrian took one step forward.

His eyes still on Marcus.

"If this is your game."

Marcus raised an eyebrow slightly.

"A game."

Adrian continued.

"Then you have already lost control."

Leonard glanced sideways.

A faint smile appeared.

Marcus laughed softly.

"No."

He paused.

"I am just getting started."

The lights in the room flickered again.

Stronger.

Faster.

Daniel tensed.

"There's a system surge."

Sophia focused immediately.

"He's activating something."

Down below.

The structure in the center of the room began to change.

Its pulse grew faster.

The light from within intensified.

Leonard took half a step back.

"This isn't good."

Adrian did not move.

His gaze remained fixed on the core.

Marcus spoke again.

"Every core you destroy."

He paused.

"Opens another one."

Silence.

Colder.

Sophia understood instantly.

"That's not the center."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"This is a trigger."

Leonard exhaled a long breath.

"We just turned something on."

Adrian stared at the core.

His eyes narrowed.

"Shut it down."

Daniel shook his head.

"Can't do it from here."

Sophia thought quickly.

"Has to be done manually."

Silence.

Only for a moment.

Adrian stepped forward.

Straight toward the core.

Leonard cursed under his breath.

"Typical."

He followed.

Behind them.

Footsteps sounded again.

More numerous.

Faster.

Marcus watched.

His smile never fading.

"Go on."

Up above.

Sophia gripped her device.

Her heart beating fast.

She knew.

This was a critical moment.

"Adrian."

Her voice entered his comms.

Adrian did not turn.

But he heard.

"If you make the wrong move."

Sophia paused.

"Everything will collapse."

Silence.

Adrian stood before the core.

Light illuminated his face.

He raised his hand.

He hesitated.

Not out of fear.

But because he knew.

This decision.

Could not be undone.

Behind him.

Leonard took position.

Covering every possible angle of attack.

Up above.

Daniel held his breath.

Sophia closed her eyes for a moment.

And in between seconds that felt like an eternity.

The choice had to be made.

Because this time.

It wasn't just about destroying the enemy.

It was about determining.

What would remain when it was all over.
